Help! I keep buying vinyl!!!

My Red Rodney collection is getting quite expansive. I also have some Ira Sullivan releases featuring him. His best LPs are from his early days, and then later on Muse records. Check out The Red Arrow and Superbop.

BTW, I ordered my Squeezebox today. The store had run out of Touch. Should have it by the weekend. This store is really cool noob. It's called Mostly Digital. They sell Macs, but aside from that it's basically esoteric computer-centric gear. Audio, cameras, monitors, etc.

One thing they had which caught my eye is the M-Audio speakers which everyone speaks so highly of. I am going to see if they have an auditioning policy.

I bought a new Ultralink toslink cable, to challenge my Monster. Toslink is my only option between the Yammy and the dac. If I hear alot of difference I may lay down some cash on an Audioquest.

I have RR's Yards Pad on right now. It's got "that" sound...you know? Superb.

OK I have decided to rip some Red Rodney. BTW, my Ultralink cable is exactly on par with the Tributaries. Unlike the Monster of equivelant value, which audibly smeared the signal. Pffft, Monster can really be a joke sometimes.

If you do some Red Rodney rips, I'd like a copy. But no need to do any for me if you're not already doing them. I'm a little bit loaded up with a stack of varied stuff I borrowed from the local library. I'm digging the 2008 Steve Winwood album, for one. These are up next...





On the Rhapsody downloading, it works about like iTunes, except it's MP3 format. It's mostly $0.99 per track, except that some (like this Red Rodney album) are available only as a full album. Most of those are $9.99. Considering the 128k bit rate, I've never considered downloading to be an option.

noob, I have both of those RR LPs ripped, just need to export.

I want your opinion about the SQ. Those blues LPs are not good candidates because the production is poor. I will use Superbop as a standard as it really pushes the treble with the horns. I think the AT may be a tad bright in the upper register. It's wavering between extremely revealing to fatiguing. I have my Empire and Shure both mounted on headshells so I can rip Superbop with each. I'll let you know when the albums are all ready.

BTW, do you want any Stevie Ray?

I'm not a huge fan, but I have enjoyed her music for quite some time.

I picked up a Donald F@gen - Nightfly LP for a buck and it's spinning, now. It's surprising to me that it took me this long to get one.

Got a call out of the blue today. Friend of mine sourced a collection of 1000 LPs up for grabs...all free.

I don't have the time to photograph all of them but here's the pick of the lot. Near mint Smith, Mingus and Hancock. I almost had a stroke. I also got some replacements that are better quality, but there's a good dozen or so that are "new" to me.

just got a hold of the dylan mono boxset. tombstone blues sounds pretty delicious to me. pretty neat reproduction of original jackets, inner sleeves and inserts. no. 0191. check it out.

My favorite period of Dylan LPs would have to be with The Band backing him, fave LP would be Blonde on Blonde. If you really want to get to the roots, you must check out Woody Guthrie. But if you really want to get to the roots of Dylan, he "borrowed" much of his image and style from the legendary Ramblin Jack Elliott.

Elliott cut some great albums in the UK for a label called Topic and then in his heyday, for Prestige and Vanguard. They are quite sought after on todays vinyl market, particularily the Topic releases. I would suggest buying any reissues you can find especially the albums cut with Derroll Adams.

Have you made any upgrades to your system? I forget, did you buy speaker stands?

My first exposure to Ramblin' Jack Elliott was on his contributions to the Bread and Roses album. The Bread and Roses group performed in concerts and the music was played in prisons in California. Great music and a great cause.

Admittedly, Dylan's music is much more engaging.

The problem is when you look at the specific history of Dylan's association first with Guthrie (whom everyone at the time idolized), and then Elliott, one can't help but be a little miffed with Dylan. He did however find his own voice and style but in the beginning, it was Elliott's he portrayed.

There is a legendary story about Woody Guthrie's time with Lead Belly. He would always ask Lead Belly to show him riffs, but Lead Belly would say "if you want a riff, steal it...I'm not just gonna give it away!"

Thinking of that, I think Dylan did what many musicians had done before him and certainly after.
