really good one from the Microphones that I just picked up...still skewed but not as epic or heavy as the Mt. Eerie work that he does now. Cool if you like Eric's Trip or some of that arty, fuzz pop from the K Records library.

I still have a cassette copy of Arm of the Lord too, and still in decent shape I think. I'll have to pull it out this weekend and give it a try.

Agree with you on Girl Talk. It's starting to sound like Stars on 45 to me.

Sometimes it can be deliriously sublime, like dropping Lil' Wayne over "Stepping Out"... but other times it can be just gratingly awful like Rihanna paired with Fugazi's "Waiting Room" (I'm not gonna let you spoil that one for me, Greg!) or the umpteenth usage of "War Pigs" or "I Want You Back" in a rap remix...

Yep. And while I'm glad he used one of my favorite Devo songs ("Gates of Steel"), by the time I got to that part, I was sick of the album. It seems like too much of a formula he's sticking to, and I'd like more singing vocals as opposed to rap vocals.

Picked up some vinyl yesterday. 4 Henry Mancini records and 2 Gershwin from the thrift store for $5. They are all dirty and need cleaning. But I also picked up Sufjan Steven's Age of Adz and Eels' Tomorrow Morning.

I heard this already on NPR's First Play, I figured it would be a good one to pick up on vinyl - hoping that it would help warm up/fill out the simple electronics. It does, but so far, granted this is only the 1st play of the vinyl, the dynamic shifts are mundane. Maybe it will open up more on a few more spins. Nothing as grand or as soft as the shifts in Illinois. For instance, with all the clicky crazy sounds the electronics make, why isn't there the detail of mirco-dynamics like between the guitar and piano on John Wayne Gacy, Jr.? Also - the detail in the electronics are a bit amateurish. There is little depth to what I hear so far. Kind of like when Radiohead tried to go electric. Songs are good, and creative, but you can hear the difference between a cross over artist and someone who has come up in electronic music.



Haven't spun it yet but am excited to hear it.

Update.... oh the vinyl is so thin. Could not tell because there is a 45 single disc in the package as well - so - it made it appear stiff. Shame shame E-Works records for putting out such a floppy disc. I'd much rather that extra 45 plastic went into the LP instead. But so far the music is good.

The Slackers: The Great Rocksteady Swindle

This is a group I've really slept on. Last year I picked up their Afternoon in Dub album and really enjoyed it and still play it frequently. Now, I've just listened to their latest and I'm really digging it. They mold a lot of traditional ska and rocksteady sounds quite well. Just started listening to this one but so far so good. Anyone know more about these guys, I'd appreciate suggestions of what albums to check out.

I had some friends that used to listen to the Slackers about a decade ago. I think we even roadtripped to Chicago to see them once although I didn't go to the show (I think I just bummed around town). I remember that they went emo for at least one album when a lot of other third-wave ska bands were doing the same, so if you're looking into their back catalog, be careful.

Yeah, my being generally skeptical about anything called a ska band from this era is why I figure I'd need someone to cherry pick albums if I look around too much at these guys. The two I have heard I have liked though.

This is the one I was thinking of... pretty cringe-inducing. I don't really know their other stuff that well so I'm probably useless for any other recommendations.

Well said. One would have to assume that any band inferring ska in their make up would have to be well schooled in the history. That said, some of them are so far off the mark that either they have never listened to anything earlier than Madness, or they just don't get it. Either way is no good.

I am always up for something new but c'mon, Dekker still has it. He is still the King of Ska.

I like it nobody...alot. I only got through about 4 tracks on my headphones. I will load it onto my portable while I shovel, along with these.
