The other day, I was thumbing through a few spins and found this tasty treat. The sound is a wonderful funk burn of jazz, fusion, psychedelia and world-beat electronica. The musician-ship is really quite good--no mindless bumbling and pretentious noodling about. These kids know what the heck they're doing...and apparently they've been at it for awhile: since 1988 or thereabouts. The recording is also very fine, with lots happening between and around the channels, making headphone listening a real feast for the ears. Since listening to this morsel, I have checked out a couple of their earlier albums (this was released last year). They are no slouch on the ears either, and indicate a maturity and depth that encourages me that these guys will be here for awhile...

Anathallo - Floating World

Nice little album from this group from my state of Michigan. I think it's best when they use drums, and overall this has a nice feel, although it is a bit consistent.

Noob, I just listened to that June Christy Cd on amazon. Its awesome. I've got very varied tastes and have come to really appreciate vocal music like that. That type of music sounds awesome on Maggies. I'm going to order that album on the remastered Cd. Check out www.eastwindimports.com if you like that type of music as well as jazz, big band, and classical. Most of the recordings are pristine and many are on SACD, XRCD 24 and LP's. There's plenty of Chet Baker too!

"The Best Audiophile Voices" Its an xrcd which plays on regular Cd players, only the quality of the recording is fabulous.

Yeah I know, they play covers but they do it fabulously. I'll be seeing them in March and can't wait!!!
It's defintely worth 18 bucks for this LP + free CD.

Back when I was barely housebroken, my dad had a collection of 8-Track tapes and a player. Among them was the music of Petula Clarke, Johnny Cash and Burt Bacharach as representatives of his interest in current music. He was especially fond of classical, and an assortment of Verdi, Puccini, Beethoven and others spilled into the mix, heavily influencing my tastes for years to come.

Getting back to the Hit Parade, one of the stand-out musicians at that time, is one I turn to now and then when I am wistful and thinking back: Mr. Roger Williams. Although Ferante and Teicher fans may balk at my saying so, Williams' piano playing was among the best in the business. He collaborated with a number of well-regarded composers and performers, including John Barry (of Born Free and James Bond note) and Andy Williams. Even today, listening to Williams' and Barry's Born Free makes me quite teary, a guilty pleasure I shouldn't tell you about lest you toss me out of the cool club, beverage and all (careful!).

Here is a clip of the mighty and dexterous Mr. Williams doing Autumn Leaves. I just found it recently, and it astounds me even as I write.

Man I cleaned off a Ray Charles LP out of a stack of wax I acquired some time back and was it good. It was some of his older more Blues stuff.. It gave me a whole new respect for Ray. The vinyl was a bit rough and sometimes I don't tolerate it but I couldn't pull the needle off this one. I'll have to find the title and see if there's a better copy out there some where.

I picked up the new Lady Antebellum album. This dynamic duo seems to be Country's new big thing. The album is a good listen. Doesn't seem very Country to me. The first single Need You Now is an excellent song. I also enjoy their style of song structure, sometimes female vocals, sometimes male and sometimes harmony. this new release was only $7.99 on Amazon may want to give them a listen.

I also have my first Govt. Mule on deck. I think I'm going to like this really well. It's High And Mighty. Other recs would be appreciated for Govt. Mule.

I also listened to Halestorm which is a more straight forward Hard Rocking debut album. They have a female singer. It's one of those bands that's almost Hard Pop opposed to Rock but I liked it, the songs are catchy and good energy when in that mood.

Massive Attack: Heligoland

I'm really liking this one. I'm a big Massive Attack fan so don't know how objective I am, but I'd say if you like 'em at all this is more than worth a listen. Since their albums all seem to ave a distinctive mood, hard to really make comparisons, but it is pretty gloomy, but more beat heavy than something like 100th Window. Maybe most similar to Mezzanine but with a more tribal feel to the beats. This is gonna get a lot of plays.
