I just got an onkyo p 306 rs that I am going to mate to two onkyo m-504 amps....with one amp driving a pair of Advent Heritage and the other amp driving a pair of Cerwin Vega D-9's

Can anyone explain the difference between the P306 and the P304......I see the 304 is the preferred preamp for the 504's now that I got the 306...did I mess up?

My guess is that that 304/504 were from the same line but that does not neccessarily mean that they were "matched" by design. I have a 5150 and the pre-amp that came with it was a 3150, it looks like it was a rack system and 50 was how Onkyo designated the components in that system. Let your ears be your guide as to which sounds best and do not get too hung up on the model numbers.

Very nice gear indeed! Who's to say where the dividing line is for qualifying as "vintage", but I use 25 years as a rough guide. I vividly remember when the Levinson JC-2 preamp arrived in '75 or so. I loved its form factor and modeled my DIY attenuator box after it.



I was the happy owner of Acoustats for nearly thirty years before replacing them with the Sound Labs. It was the 2+2 that I owned for the longest time - between 1982 and 2005. I had a seamstress make new socks for them out of spandex which is both visually and acoustically more transparent. Unlike the original burlap type cloth, you could easily see the panel grid behind them just like the current U-1s.



The Medallion Red transformers were wired with Monster cable which had oxidized horribly over time (and added a decided "edge" to the sound). I rewired them and bypassed the fuses which removed yet another veil.

I have 3 systems that I use frequently and the only things that are not vintage is a Bellari VP130 tybe Riaa and Headphone amp and a Cyrus CD6s CDplayer

My setups are from source to speaker:
Setup 1.
Garrard 301 with SME 3012 in +40 KG birch plinth - with a Denon dl 103
Steup is provided by Beyer Dynamics mic-transformers into a Bellari VP130 tube Riaa
Control amp is a Luxman L58 A and Power is handled bu two mono QUAD 510
Speakers are Tannoy DC 12" in 150 kg Concrete Reinforced backloaded Duelund horns
Supl. sources to this setup are a early Pioneer CD player, A Luxman FM tuner L50A and a Pioneer CT9191F Cassette deck

Setup 2.
Sources: Revox B790 with Ortofon OM 30 Super, Revox B225 CDplayer, Revox B710 MKII Cassette deck, Studer A710 Cassette deck, Revox B77 4 track and Revox B77 two track, Nagra IV two track - Revox B760 FM tuner
Inegrated Revox B750 MK II is used for Preamp and Power is provided by a Revox B740
Speakers Revox BX 4100

Setup 3.
Thorens TD 124 mk I with Ortofon SPU Gold + Lenco L75 in progress turning into a monster Plinth with Lustre tonearms + Cyrus CD6s CDplayer and a Quad FM3 FM tuner
Preamp Quad 33 - power amp Quad 303 - Speakers Rogers Ls3/5A

I am working on a two setupa implementing a Braun SP 1000 Recordplayer, The Fisher 101C - Fidelio horns with vintage Philips fullrange speakers and a Mono setup with a corner horn and a very simpel mono tube amp

This is my first post. I was wondering what you all thought was TOO old for a set of vintage once excellent rated speakers. I've been hunting around for a set of B & W 's for a while and have seen some DM640 made in 1990 and Matrix 803s from 1990. They 'look' fine but what do you have to worry about with older speakers? Do they get tired sounding? I know about woofer cone failure if foam or paper, but what about rubber, polyprop...etc.? What about the coils/magnets/crossovers...etc.?

Any advise would be welcome!

I think I may have posted to this thread already,but I recently bought 2 Yamaha M-80 power amps.I use them to drive 2 pair of Maggies,one pair SMGa's and a new pair off MMG's.The M-80 will drive 2 pair of 4 ohm speakers at once but 1 pair per amp sounds better

My living room system is powered by a Pioneer SX-1080 through Cerwin-Vega AT-15's I bought about 15 years ago. I literally had to reglue the cabinets once, but they are holding up great.

I have a Sansui G-8700DB in very good condition I want to sell. It's been stored in the original box (have the manual) since 1994. Photo below. Where is the best place on this site to post it?
