The Shins - Chutes Too Narrow - This one has become one of my fave CDs to do cardio to.
The Killers - Hot Fuss - This one took me a while to warm up to, but now that I have I think it's a kick-ass disk.

Some nice comments at amazon if you click the cover. She also sung some on that very nice Los Super Seven disc called Canto that I submitted a song from for one of our Rave Recs comps (she didn't sing on that song though). It had a couple guys from Los Lobos and some Tex Mex flavor too. But some of it is in English.

Uh, Volleinweider is a new age artist from switzerland, main instrument is electroacoustic harp, he will throw anithing into the mix, from world to jazz to prog rock to classical but anythingh to do with latin trova.
On the other part Fernando Delgadillo is a singer/songwriter from Mexico ( DF) with superb guitar playing with great lirics ranging from love to political views and some goofy ones his musical style take from many parts from real trova to England folk ( actually in his first album he takes a tune from the straws) and some jazzy tunes.
I ll recommend to you con cierto aire a ti ( something like " it resembles you) and entre pairos y derivas ( something like between tide and calm).
If you like somethingh more pop/rock oriented give a try to Julieta Venegas.

Spock's Beard - Octane. Still growing on me. There's certainly some nice hooks in there. Feel Euphoria didn't grab me right away either so I'm not concerned. However, if you're hoping for the Spock's Beard of old you won't find it here. Go buy Morse's solo stuff for that.

Arena - Pepper's Ghost. Those expecting a neo-prog album beware. This is straight up prog metal. I certainly was thrown a bit. The last track is quite good.

Drive-By Truckers - The Dirty South. I don't what it is about this album but I just love it.
Moody Blues - Children's Children
Tull - Stand Up. The Mofi

Elton John - Tumbleweed Connection. The Mofi

Jazz:

Lee Morgan - The Sidewinder. Some say this is Lee's finest album as a leader. Soul jazz at it's best. The title track is most excellent.

Hank Mobley - No Room For Squares. Hank is quickly becoming one of my favorite tenor saxophonist. His 60's output on Blue Note are all excellent.

Eric Dolphy - Out To Lunch. To "free" and "avante garde" for my tastes.

Stanley Turrentine - Up At "Mintons". A great live set from yet another excellent tenor saxophonist.

Joe Henderson - In n' Out. There was no shortage of tenor saxophonists in the 50's and 60's. Another Blue Note classic.

Dexter Gordon - Go. Yet another tenor saxophonist playing some fine hard bop.

Johnny Griffin - A Blowin' Session. Anyone looking for Blue Note recordings from the 50's and 60's will find a plethora of music to choose from with much of it remastered in Rudy Van Gelder series. Anyway, Johnny Griffin was yet another tenor saxophonist from the era.

Freddie Hubbard - Hub-Tones. What do ya know, a trumpeter. Freddie released a bunch good albums on Blue Note. This one is no exception.

I think the problem with the Tuesday thread (IMO) is that some people have been just tacking their new list on the previous Tuesday's list, which makes a monster big list with lots of hits. They do that a lot over at obner.org and I find it really onerous to have to scroll through 10,000 responses.

Here's the deal:

(a) I don't know if I got an early copy or not, but the guy at the music store has provided early copies to me before.

(b) It sounded good on first listen, but I've only spun it once, which leads to my next answer....

(c) I can provide very preliminary and basically meaningless comments on the 3 new albums I got, but I've only spun each one of them once so I'm not sure how helpful it'd be (if at all).

I can tell you this, of the three new ones (Bright Eyes, Andrew Bird, High on Fire), High on Fire caught my attention the most. I'm definitely going to have to spend more time with all of them to get a good sense about them, though.

P.S. Alphabetical? I thought I was doing good just by keeping track this time.

P.S.S. Does anyone else find Berlin to be very inconsistent? There are a few very good tracks on it, but some of them just bore the shit out of me.

P.S.S.S. The Pogues just weren't the same after Shane MacGowan left/got kicked out. Anyone heard the stuff he did with the Popes?

P.S.S.S.S. I was on a bit of a Hollies kick lately. I also listened to part of Sing Hollies In Reverse, which is a Hollies tribute album and has such artists as Material Issue, Mitch Easter, E, and the Posies. They had some really good songs, but put out some real dreck too.

My guilty pleasure is Italian Oboe Concertos, vol. 2, Anthony Camden, oboe, with Nicholas Ward and the City of London Sinfonia. Naxos 8.554772. The four composers, Salieri, Besozzi, Platti, and Rosetti are minor figures but still quite competent composers. The Salieri piece is particularly beautiful (he didn't really kill Mozart!) But Anthony Camden and the orchestra play these with great style and the sound is simply gorgeous. Very enjoyable.

Just getting settled after moving a couple of weeks ago; the stereo's not set up yet. Yet while I haven't really listened to anything new (I do have a disc by a Brit band called the 22-20s I'll be giving a spin to), I've listened to more stuff in the past couple of weeks than, it seems, in the previous couple of months. Musicmatch Jukebox dropped a turd of an upgrade some weeks back that's had me, well, not too happy, but they just came through with an update that took care of some serious flaws in the 'playlist' department.
