Name your top 10 debut records of all time.

    I think we may have done this many moons ago, but perhaps a retread thread is better than noe at all. Here are mine, in no particular order;

    The Smiths - S/T
    Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures
    Pavement - Slanted and Enchanted
The Shins - Oh, Inverted World
    Bob Dylan - Bob Dylan
The Strokes - Is This It
    Television - Marquee Moon
Elvis Costello - My Aim is True
    Big Star - #1 Record
    Marshall Crenshaw - S/T

I'm sure I'm missing a few gems that could easily be substituted for one or more of these. So who did I miss? Springsteen's 'Greetings from Asbury Park', Bob Marley's 'Catch a Fire', The Clash - S/T, The Band - Music From Big Pink, Roxy Music - S/T, and more recently, Arcade Fire - Funeral and Interpol - Turn on the Bright Lights. Yeah, they're all great records.
I call my bathroom Jim instead of John so I can tell people that I go to the Jim first thing every morning.

If you say the word 'gullible' very slowly it sounds just like oranges.

Love Dylan, but honestly don't think I've heard his debut. Definitely don't own it, nothing before Freewheelin', which is kind of his real debut for me. But anyway, some good ones on your list. So many amazing debut records to choose from, especially back in the 60s, but here's 10 or so that still have some special meaning to me nowadays, skipping any of your picks like Costello and JD which would surely be near the top of my list.

(though to be honest, I probably shouldn't list the Pretenders and/or the Cars since I haven't played either one in years, but they do still kind of rule)...

(and Califone is technically not a debut since it was preceded by 2 EPs, and they were basically the same band as Red Red Meat, but what a great record)

(and Tricky came over from Massive Attack, so it's not as fresh a debut as some of the others, but wow, kinda outa nowhere for me)

(and Eno was of course in Roxy Music, but still, another surprise attack)

(and I think Buckner had something unreleased before Bloomed, but it's a great debut to me)

Brian Eno - Here Come the Warm Jets
Duncan Browne - Give Me Take You
    Mink DeVille - Cabretta
Pretenders – Pretenders / The Cars - The Cars
Devo - Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!
    Talking Heads - '77
    PJ Harvey - Dry
    Portishead - Dummy
    Califone - Roomsound
    The Feelies - Crazy Rhythms
    Tricky - Maxinquaye
The Violent Femmes - The Violent Femmes
    Blasters – Blasters
    Richard Buckner - Bloomed

I chose the Dylan record because, well, it's Dylan.

It only has 2 original songs; Talkin' New York and Song to Woody, while the rest are old standards and such. I'm sure you saw 'O Brother, Where Art Thou'? Dylan played 'Man of Constant Sorrow' on his debut, along with 'Baby, Let Me Follow You Down, Gospel Plow, and House of the Risin' Sun, among others. I would submit that his second release, 'Free Wheelin' Bob Dylan' was much better, including 'Don't Think Twice, It's All Right', and 'A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall'.

I could easily list the Feelies on my list, ditto Talking Heads and Brian Eno.

I assume we're talking full lengths here only. Off the top of my head:

    Clash - s/t
Dead Kennedys - Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables
    Ramones - s/t
    Pixies - Surfer Rosa
    Stone Roses - s/t
    Big Star - #1 Record
    Suicidal Tendencies - s/t
    Violent Femmes - s/t

I'll add more later if I think of it.

Edit: I think of Soul Rebels as Marley/Wailers' debut.
And the world will turn to flowing pink vapor stew.

Surfer Rose wasn't the Pixie's first record...

...but it was their first full-length. Funny, I just heard 'Where is My Mind' on a TV show the other night. Nice call on the Stone Roses too. Not sure how I could miss that one.

U2's Boy #1?? I mean, the album is okay, but very inconsistent if you ask me. They're as delusional as Bono is.

But there are some on that list that I love (and forgot): Pink Flag, Never Mind the Bollocks, The Stooges, Murmur, Chirping Crickets, VU & Nico
And the world will turn to flowing pink vapor stew.

Your Metallica and Mars Volta picks aren't so bad either. Metallica was on my original list, but I had to narrow it down and drop a few off. It didn't survive the cut.

That's pretty good top 100 list. Two of the top 10 (Metallica, Floyd) were on my original list but didn't make the final cut. Probably because they weren't my debut to the band. All the debut albums I picked were also the first thing that I heard by the band.

I didn't realize that Murmur was REM's debut. I never gave it much thought actually.

    In no particular order...

The Clash - s/t (very first one that popped in my head, anyway)
REM - Murmur (although I consider the EP Chronic Town to be their real debut)
The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Are You Experienced (a true game-changer)
    The Doors - s/t (ditto)
The Pretenders - s/t (still one of my top 10 discs)
    U2 - Boy (no, really)
Arcade Fire - Funeral (looking forward to seeing them in a couple weeks)
Elvis Costello - My Aim is True (I used to be disgusted...)
The Police - Outlandos d'Amour (easy to forget how fresh this sounded back then)
Led Zeppelin - s/t (not really original, but hard to ignore)

Yes, I am a HUGE Crowded House fan. Infact, I also love Split Enz and own all of their albums on original vinyl.

I take it you don't enjoy hip hop. That top 100 list included Paid in Full, I would agree with that for sure. It's tough to pick on a list like this. I tried to include all factors such as the bands discography, popular relevance and of course, personal relevance.

FA I suspect you aren't a funk/soul/ RB fan either. P-Funk was VERY experimental and progressive back in the day.

The Mars Volta's debut really impacted me as a being a great album and renewed my faith in rock. I also believe it to be their best. They shed Rubin and the result was less than pleasing IMO.

    Anyhow, great topic.

    Hmm....

    Okay, I'll play.

    1. Parliment - "Mothership Connection". Funk was never the same again.

    2. The Last Poets - "The Last Poets". The spoken word was never so powerfull.

    3. Gil Scott Heron - "Small Talk at 125th and Lennox" - When rappin' meant you had something to say.

    4. Marvin Gaye - "What's Going On" - The first album by Marvin FOR Marvin as opposed to Berry Gordy. It was truly his coming out party.

    5. Laura Nyro - "First Songs/More Than a New Discovery" - One of my favorite singer songwrite finds her voice in 1967, singing songs she wrote in her teens.

    6. Mandrill - "Mandrill" - And afro-cuban, Rock/funk was never the same again.

    7. Bob Marley - "Catch a Fire" - Not the first reggae band, nor the last.. but when you define a genre for good or for ill.

    8. The Beatles - "Meet the Beatles" - Well their place cannot be denied.

    9. Lauren Hill - "The Miseducation of Lauren Hill" - My god what an album, I was left, speechless.

    10. Public Enemy - "Yo Bum Rush the Show" - So the kids have something to say after all?

    Worf

You're right, hip hop/funk/soul/R&B just aren't my cuppa tea for the most part.

I agree with your assessment of Mars Volta. I really liked that first disk, but nothing that I've heard since has been all that enjoyable to me. I have their second, and possibly third, disk at home. I should probably sell them. I'll never listen to them again. I still pull the debut out on occasion however.

Have you heard the new Crowded House disk, Intriguer? I've been hearing mixed reviews. I'm also a huge fan, but their last one was a big disappointment for me...especially since it took them so long to release it. I'm not jumping to buy the new one yet.

But we've gone off-topic...So what? This is the most active thread here in ages. Great topic...great discussion!

Some very good songs, but I never thought that much of it as a record. The next two completely overshadowed it in my mind as well, so I guess it kind of gets lost to me. Split Enz "Mental Notes" debut was great though, one of the best things they ever did until the near perfection of "Time and Tide", though those two phases of their music were quite different.

But speaking of that, I forgot to list one of my favorite debuts of the 2000s, Augie March "Sunset Studies". Beautiful record, has it all. Great songwriting, words that flow past like good poetry, always interesting music, perfect production, no damage from the loudness war that wrecked the sound of most CDs of this era even though it is a Sony product, and even nice cover art. Yea, listening to it again right now, and this is good, so good I could almost have written this blog myself (some other big favorites on there too)... http://wirelesscranium.blogspot.com/.../best-of-2000s

Man, Fleet Foxes in the top 100? I can think of 20 others I'd put there ahead of those dudes.

I agree that Hendrix should be there...much higher, same with Santana

Nirvana Bleach was OK, but Nevermind blows it out of the water. But whaddiya gonna do, when you worship at the alter of self-tortured rockstars who couldn't handle life and you want one of the recent ones in your top10? you reach...

Just for the "record", Birth Of The Cool was not a debut.

    My top debuts

    Sade Diamond Life
    James Taylor Sweet Baby James
Lauryn Hill The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill
    John Mayer Room For Squares

That's all I can think of off the top of my head.
