Yeah, glad to hear someone has enjoyed some of the stuff. And Jim, I still from time to time will dig out You Can't Surf in Kansas. I also really got a lot of mileage from maf's songs of 1979, although I must admit I have gone mostly iPod and vinyl nowadays and therefore have lost track of a lot of good comps.

Funny thing is just had to travel in a rental and dug out some CDs for the ride and started missing them.

Not all comps can be winners. So, I figure I should start reducing expectations. I made this one for myself several years ago when writing grants on deadlines. I wanted something that could keep me awake while burning the midnight oil and provide focus but not distract me too much. Usually I turn to something like Mingus. This time I started building a playlist and it morphed into a comp. Around the same time (c. 2006) I think there was a teeny tiny uptick in jazz interest on the boards and I posted this as non-traditional jazz. This compost works for me but YMMV.

ditto, noddin. I was a little hesitant to get in on the comp exchanges because I knew I would not be very diligent in reciprocating. I received my first RR comp from Jim Clark in Dec 2004. It really got me up to speed on new music (sparked lots of purchases including Modest Mouse, Yo La Tengo, Snow Patrol, Eleventh Dream Day et al.) and I've tried to keep up ever since. Interestingly, my son made off with the JC comp for a while. He eventually returned it, I think. I'll try to find it.

Heh. Nice try, bobs. I got sumpop easily enough and have given it 3-4 listens. My muffler dropped off my car Wednesday so I spend many hours in Panera Thursday working and waiting with sumpop on repeat. It's not easy to work Contact into a comp, interesting pick. I rather enjoyed flashing back to the 80's/90's and then forward. I think I enjoyed the center of the mix most, roughly tracks 6-11 and the last 3 as well. Thanks!

Here’s a fresh comp that I’ve been obsessing myself with and am calling finished as of today. I feel I owe an explanation to whoever downloads it... I keep a playlist where I drop odd songs that cling to me. I never actually listen to this song bucket; it just holds stuff. Now and then, when I get obsessed, I’ll pull out some tracks and attempt to thread them to some poorly defined theme playing in my head (emphasis on my head). I don’t worry too much about being current or original per se. Lately, I’ve been listening to a bunch of stuff with loops and samples and noises. After about 20+ listens, I think I have a compilation that flows pretty well (flow being rather subjective here). This might go down better with headphones and maybe a good drink to prime the mind...or unplug it (my recommendation is Hendricks gin stirred over ice and strained, slice of cucumber optional).

Anyway, give it a listen and see if it floats your boat or, if you prefer, let it wash up on the shores of some digital landfill. Let me know.

Let it never be said that Finch skimps on tracks in his compilations. If any of you have received a past Finch comp in the mail, you’ll understand a bit of the charm behind these. Extensive hand typed printouts of tracks listings and lots of freebies usually come with. Of the comps I’ve received from Finch, this is the one I like most. There’s several of tracks I like, starting right with the first two. Emphasis generally on guitar, prog, and fusion. I’ll confess that my leanings don’t tend toward prog and fusion, although AR has converted me over to Porcupine Tree, and on this list I enjoy the Ozric Tantacles track.

Today, I'm digging the the tracks by Dengue Fever (tingles of fatalic sleeze), The Kills (not sure why I like this one, maybe the crunchy buzz), Middle Brother (sounds solid and honest), Zomes (just for the drone), & Exene Cervenka (I missed out on X entirely. This sounds nice--although on the fence about the horns)

Glad you guys are enjoying it. A couple notes, the rest of that Exene is pretty-much horn free. Also, kinda surprised you mentioned the Zomes. That was one I threw on there because I like it, but nothing I really expected to hear anyone else mention positively. Glad to see I'm not the only one.

I've been listening to that James Blake (self-titled) album too and am still on the fence (but slowly getting off of it). I really like the atmospheres, textures and wobbly uncertainty of the sound. He casts an impressive spell for a debut. But, I've never been of fan of /*begin inability to name a genre*/ that smooth bedroomy R&B ballad kind of sound /*end*/. The third track The Wilhelm Scream is the clearest example of what I'm thinking of. Although, to be fair, I think that track is really a very good one, that more than makes up for my aversions. I never listen to the radio anymore so I don't know if he's getting any airplay. If it were me, I'd pick Wilhelm as the one to push on the air.

I suspect this album will only grow on me.

Today I’ll compost two more from Slosh. Both are from 2007 and both got many listens from me.

Faux Punk is one of my favorites from AR. I had several tracks from this one stuck in my head for weeks. I probably would’ve liked the McLusky track for the Song:Album titles alone but the song rocks as well. I picked up that album. I got hooked on the Cat Power track and have since picked up her great back catalog. I’m of the long held opinion that Add it Up my be one of, if not the best song of the 80’s, and should rank very high for rock in general. Stephen Malkmus, Auto Lux, Les Savy Sav…great tracks. Lots to like.

Slosh put out 2007 compilations in stages. There was an End of Summer Comp, a 3/4 Comp, and a Year End Overflow comp. I don’t seem to have a Best of 2007. I’m wondering if I missed it? I know I’ve had problems working with wma lossless files, perhaps I wasn’t able to convert it at the time.

Anyway, this nearly year ender is good. Small Bones Small Bodies is just flat out catchy. Methamphetamine is lovely, Brace Yourself, etc. etc. Got turned on to Josh Ritter, started paying attention many of the bands Sun Volt, Spoon, Wilco.
