    Best & Worst of 1970 - 1974

My 30-year reunion is coming up this Sept. and I have been given the responsibility of providing the music from our high school years: 1970 - 1974. Your suggestions for songs that should be included (ie, Rolling Stones' "Sweet Virginia") and songs that should be discarded ("The Lion Sleeps Tonight") would be appreciated. All genres are welcome: Top 40, alternative (did that exist in 1974?), country, pop, metal, rock, etc.

    Thanks,
    Mh

Since all genres (i.e. non-mainstream) are welcome, I'd suggest some Big Star. How about something like "Ballad of el Goodo" or "Back of a Car"? Lots of good ones to choose from off their first two albums.

There're also a couple great Kinks albums in that time frame (Lola . . . and Muswell Hillbillies). You could go with the more-known "Lola" or something not-so-known like "Strangers" or "Complicated Life."

If you want something (much) more aggressive, you could always include something by the Stooges like "Loose." I'm sure that'd be a big hit.

Hey Mary, I haven't forgotten about your albums. I just haven't had a chance to send them and I'm on the road, and likely will be for another two weeks, but I'll get them to you.

    Talking 'sabbath!!!

Try dropping "Electric Funeral" or "Sweet Leaf" on 'em. I'm sure that will go over big. : P

Alright, in all seriousness, try these:

The Rolling Stones: "Rip This Joint," "Casino Boogie" "Sway," "B-tch," "Soul Survivor," "Loving Cup"
    The Stooges: "Dirt"
The Allman Brothers: "Mountain Jam" (you won't have to touch the player for 30 minutes)
The Velvet Underground: "Sweet Jane," "Rock And Roll," "New Age"
Led Zeppelin: Anything that hasn't been played into the ground (everything off III's acoustic side or half of I)
Yes: "South Side Of The Sky," "Heart Of The Sunrise"
The New York Dolls: EVERYTHING, but especially "Personality Crisis," "Looking For A Kiss," "Pills"
Neil Young: "Albuquerque," "Speakin' Out," "World On A String," On The Beach in general, "Danger Bird"
Bob Dylan: Blood On The Tracks. Period.

That's about all my mind can come up with at 9:47 this AM.

You may want to look for a bunch of '70s compilation CDs called Have A Nice Day. I think there are 24 in total and they are collected by the dates they were on the radio (roughly). You can get them at Best Buy for under $10 bucks each. They are a real blast from the past, with tons of long-forgotten songs.

Just don't overlook some of those Steely Dan classics like Reelin' In the Years and Rikki Don't Lose That Number. Another great one is Midnight At The Oasis by Maria Muldar. And how about some Joni Mitchell, for Example (You Turn Me On ) I'm A Radio or Carey. Also, you can't go without some early Chicago, maybe 24 or 6 to 4 and Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is? And then there's Bread...

    hmmmm.....

My choices probably wouldn't go over all that well but I'd mix in:

The Rolling Stones - Moonlight Mile
    Bad Co. - Seagull
    Zeppelin - Bron -Y-Aur Stomp
John Lennon - Mother and/or Isolation (although I'm not really sure when these were released.....before my time, ya know )
McCartney - Heart Of The Country
Grateful Dead - Friend Of The Devil
    Traffic - Empty Pages
    Joe Walsh -County Fair
Lynryrd Skynyrd - The Ballad Of Curtis Loew

and of course there's tons of better known stuff from the likes of Steve Miller, The Who, Yes, Pink Floyd, the debut Eagles album, War, CCR, etc., etc.

Good luck. I hope you're not the type to second guess what you have to cut

    How 'bout some Captain Beyond?

Particularly Sufficiently Breathless, which for me was an undiscovered gem until a year or so ago. I'll bet most will like it if they were into any kinda rock from that era. Maybe I'll burn ya a copy. Lemme know.

Well, you had one of Bowie's best periods then, with the Man Who Sold the World, Hunky Dory and Ziggy Stardust.

Lou Reed had Transformer. I think some Velvet Underground fits in there too.

You can always go for some Sly & the Family Stone from that era.

What's Goin' On and Let's Get it On from Marvin Gaye.

Stevie Wonder was at his peak with Talking Book and Innervisions.

Al Green, Billy Paul, The Chi-Lites, the O'Jays, the Spinners

The debut record by Kiss came out in 74.

There's always the New York Dolls.

T Rex's Electric Warrior fits in there.

You could always throw in some Willie Nelson or Merle Haggard for the country fans. They both were strong then.

Stones were actually good then, Sticky Fingers and Exile on Main Street.

I think the last couple CCR records came out then.

The Who's Who's Next. Alice Cooper, Kinks

There's a bunch of other suggestions already, so I'll stop.

You need some hokey cheesebag one hit wonders like "One Toke over the Line", "Arizona", "Stuck in the Middle With You" or "Overnight Sensation". Barry mentioned the Have a Nice Day discs. They would be invaluable for putting together a music set like this.

If you people intend to "dance"...

Here's some "non-disco" soul/black-rock/funk you could dance to without having to get out a leisure suit.

    1. Mandrill - Ape is High, Fencewalk, Get it All, Cohelo... etc..

    2. War - Cisco Kid, World is a Ghetto, Lowrider, Slippin into Darkness.

    3. Kool & the Gang - Jungle Boogie, Love the Life you Live, Kool & Da Gang, Choclit Buttermilk, Hollywood Swinging.

    4. James Brown - Sex Machine, Soul Power, On the Good Foot, Lickin' Stick, "Give it up turn it loose" etc....

    5. Palriment-Funkadelic - Standing on the Verge of Gettin it On, Cosmic Slop, One Nation Under a Groove, Loose Booty etc...

    6. Earth Wind & Fire - Warner Brothers stuff, pre-CBS

This is good stuff without going "commercial". If you want that, simply go to the Billboard website and look at the Top Tens from the years you're interested in.

    Talking ok I'll bite

Didn't you say you had The Last Assembly by the Kinks? If you mention the Kinks I'm going to remember these things.Though in case I'm mistaken that's my suggestion,
Also Silver Pins and Golden Needles by Linda Ronstadt and Search and Destroy by Iggy.

I would really like to plug another all but forgotten album the self entitled "The Modern Lovers" though looks like that came out in 1976.

You don't have those? I thought part of the deal was if you made one you were automatically supposed to get the rest. Well DLD can get you covered with his '70 disc and I can cover the rest if need be. 73 and 74 are covered in one disc by Audiobill. 71 and 72 are also in my collection but I have no name on the discs or the tracklists and of course I don't recall who created those. Mike? Tony? Arghh!

Anyway, I can burn'm if you need them.

    JC and DLD,

Chalk it up to old age or senility but I don't believe I contributed to the 1970s series...anyway, the only 70s comp I have is BarryL's 1978 comp. Would love to have copies of the 1970 - 74 comps if its not too much of a pain to dupe. DLD, this week is out for me because I'm traveling out of town. Hubby and I have taken off Friday to go see "The Passion". If I recall, things aren't good for you next Tuesday. I'll email you and we'll coordinate schedules. I'd love to finally get together.

Hey kiddo, I'm out of town all next week for "THE BIG TRIAL". Howz about a week in Thibodeaux, Louisiana at the run down Holiday Inn? I didn't think so. The things us government drones go thru to bring BIG OIL to justice
If I'm back in town the week of March 8th, that would look good.

I think you did contribute to the Retro Comp craze, you submitted, Hello Century, a fantastic comp that I still listen to.

PS, I also am pretty sure I mailed you the retro comp too but when my burner gets all well and stuff, I'll redo it for ya if you can't find it..

OK, so it was Tony that did the excellent 71 an 72 comps. Looks like you're covered except for the 73/74 comp that Audio Bill made. I'll send that one to you since I'm not sure where AB is and I can get it out quicker and cheaper anyway. It will go out today.

DLD, it's a good thing I have you around to rekindle the embers of my senility. ;-). Let me go through my comps again before anyone goes to any trouble to burn & mail me copies. I just recently transferred my ceedees and comps from one location to new cabinets of an entertainment center that we had built out in the family room. Maybe I'm overlooking them. Lord knows, these eyes ain't what they used to be.

If I can't locate them there, I'll give a shout to JC, et al. They have got to be here somewhere if I received them! I've never thrown away or given away a single comp that I have received. They are too precious to me...even the ones that the music and I don't mix.

DLD: Let me know about the week of the 8th. That actually will be a good week for me, 'cept a 1-day trip to beautiful Texarkana. Looking forward to it!
