Beer Talk Time!

No, not quite beer drinking time yet since it's just turning noon in my part of the universe, but help find some new beer to try this weekend. I'm gonna try and pick up an Imperial Stout, probably a Samuel Smith's since that might be the only one I can find. Had some of that thick dark brown elixir once before and it was pretty memorable. Feel the urge to try it again. Maybe need something lighter to follow it up with so give me some suggestions for a good winter ale or a pilsener or lager or ....? Any and all suggestions welcome and appreciated, but if you have something that is available outside of your own little burg, all the better.

Rogue Mocha Porter or Rogue Shakespeare Stout, if you like the drinks with the viscosity of motor oil. My favourites.

Pretty common, but if you are looking for something a bit lighter, you could try a Hefe-Weizen. I like Paulaner myself. Their Hefe-Weizen is available just about anywhere and is one of my favorites.

Then again, I drink a whole lot of domestic piss water, so what would I know?

I have always been a little partial to Abita Amber Ale. Made in Abita Springs, Loiusiana. I love this stuff. There's also Abita Turbodog which is a little stouter, but not as good in my opinion. Probably nothing compared to the Imperial though. In the Texas area, alot of people drink Shiner Bock. It's cheap and one hell-uv-a beer. It would not be considered a "exotic" though. The garage fridge is filled with it at all times.

Damn that Abita Amber is a fine beer, not so Turbo Dogs. Also, we too keep lots of Shiner Bock in the garage fridge. Check out Sams, they might have it, or Kroger. Avoid the Shiner Blonde.

A nice stout I'ce had recently would be McKesson's (sp?) XXX Triple Stout. Had it at a beer tasting last weekend, it was generally praised by the guys, the girls wanted to barf, so thats a pretty good recommendation IMHO. Not as bitter and heavy as Turbo Dog or Guiness, pretty smooth actually.

Bummer, I just checked and Boulevard Brewing Co. doesn't go any farther west than Kansas. They have their Pale Ale as their flagship product and it would have been perfect for your follow up. This time of year they also produce their Nutcracker Ale described as:" Nutcracker Ale is Boulevard's special offering for the holiday season. This hearty, warming brew is a classic winter ale, deep amber in color, with hints of molasses balanced by the "spiciness" of Chinook hops."

It's one of my favorites and, while it's not exactly motor oil, it does have a full-bodied flavor and is perfect for this time of year. Then again, you're out in sunny AZ while I'm in frozen PA, so maybe you could give two sh**s about "Winter Lager". My other favorites are all local micro-brews that you can't buy out there, so there's no point in mentioning them.

Tonight it's Pirates of the Carribean and some Sam's Winter Lager for me.

I also give a thumbs up to the Rogue Porter, Stout, or Dead Guy Ale (depending on your preference). And while not new, Mr. Adams stays stocked in my garage refrigerator.

My favorite is Young's Oatmeal Stout. It's a stout like the Sammy Smith but it's lighter in body but still very flavorful. Not like motor oil at all. But I tend to like the stouts and porters particularly Guiness, Big Shoulders Porter, Samuel Smith's, etc. Hey, there's an idea - if they have the Imperial Stout, try the Sammy Smith Nut Brown Ale. Lighter but a nice rush/burst of flavor.

Give "La Fin du Monde" a try. It's a big bold brew that packs a wallop! For the Francais-impaired that name means "The End of the World". Really.

Oh, and I almost forgot, it's time for all the Xmas brews to start coming out, so you should seek out and find at least one bottle of Anchor's Christmas Brew, best drunk ice cold.

Currently drinking Bärenjäger, a honey-based liqueur. Dam it is good.

Yeah, that Anchor Steam is some good stuff. Cool bottle on that Bärenjäger. Some sake bottles have wood stops kinda like that. Do you ever freeze that stuff, or is it better at room temp?

Actually, hate to disapopint, but it's not woudl -- it's plastic shaped like a beehive. Still cool, though. That honey-hunting "basket" it's in is actual woven...um...whatever it is you weave when you do basketweaving, and has a working straphole on the back, just like real beekeepers do.

Sammy Smith does make some fine elixers, their Oatmeal Stout and Toddy Porter are also yummy, if you can get over the price ($12. !).
Besides seconding that La Fin De Monde rec, my favorite winter quaffs are Dogfish Head's 'Raison D' Etre - (see www.dogfish.com)
Voted 'American Beer Of The Year' in January 2000 by Malt Advocate Magazine. A deep mahogany ale brewed with beet sugar, green raisins, and Belgian yeast. As complex as a fine red wine. 8% ABV 36 IBU.
Also Youngs 'Luxuery Chocalate Stout' in the pub style cans is the bomb --creamy, choclatey nectar!
