The pendulim keeps swinging wildly from one extreme to another, and nobody realizes that the answer is somewhere in the middle.
My questions were a little more specific. Often, I think the counter-culture that rejects the mainstream is far more interesting to observe. Based on recent history, I think you can say that artists of some sort lead the way whether it's musicians, authors or whomever. Hippie, Punk, a segment of Hip Hop I think are examples of counter-cultures rejecting the mainstream. The question now is whether morality is the rising and overtaking counter to the hedonism/humanism/materialism (whatever you want to call it) of the mid 90s up to today.

This may be too simplistic, but I think the rise of this assertive morality-based culture can be traced back to the end of the Clinton years, particularly the impeachment proceedings, and it's been snowballing ever since.
