    Cool Samsung Hi-Def Duo Player

Well guys I took the plunge and pre-ordered the
Samsung Electronics 1080p Blu-ray and HD DVD Hi-Def Duo Player BD-UP5000

I bought here and they do not bill it till it ships and went for the 1 year extended service plan since it is such a new technology.

    http://www.onsale.com/shop/detail~dpno~7295840.aspx

I was going to get the LG BH200 but decided to wait for the Samsung due to be released the end of December
I like that it has the 7.1 analog outputs since my system has those too I can take advantage of the Dolby TrueHD.

pricey yeah but I must to have it.
and I am space and input limited

Here is a hands on review link:

Sweet pickles, that's a pretty cool unit - congrats on the purchase of your new toy, can't wait for you to give us some feedback on its performance when you've spent some time with it. You're right the 7.1 analog outs could be handy.

A bit steep for my frugal-blood...so just call me jealous for now...

Here's a question, does one of these qualify you for both HD-DVD and BluRay free-disc offers?

The anticipation is going to drive me nuts waiting till December and hopefully there will not be a release delay.
So for now I will not be purchasing any more regular DVD's
if its HD DVD or Blue Ray I can go ahead and get them.
    1st on the list Transformers

I know the price is a bit steep but for 779.99 is not too bad for something that has not been released yet and since the projected street price is 999.99 about the same thing the LG BH200 is going to sell for.
heck compared to what I paid for My Elite CLD-99 Laser Disc player many years ago this is cheap.

Good looking gear Brandon and it sounds like from spec it's pretty sharp. That level of convenience is well worth the asking price.

Does anyone know if it's set to do SACD or DVD-A?

    Yeah I know right.
I am always leery about purchasing a new technology as soon as it is released.
Usually I opt not to, but this time I will be the pincushion I just cant help myself, I must have this unit as soon as it is released.
I refuse to get just the HD DVD or just the Blu-Ray because I think the format war was unfair to the consumer and do not have the space to have two units so I had decided not to get either.
Then the LG BH100 was released but after researching it found it to be only half-assed.
But read that LG would eventually release the BH200 (Mid October 07???) one that did it all but was not happy it was not going to have 7.1 analog outputs.
So here we go lunging into the unknown.
Lets hope Samsung gets it right the first time.
I will post a review as soon as it is received.
I am going to add internet access near the TV before the unit comes in on so it will be ready for that too.

I really like the shiny black because It should go nicely with My Elite equipment.
The specifications do not mention SCAD or DVD-A.
It would be sweet if it did though.

Well, I would worry for you, but I have had two Samsung TV's, a DVD player, and a 19in computer monitor, with nary a peep from any of them, just a "bright pixel" from the computer monitor.
So I don't think you have anything to worry about

I was told you won't be able to access the HD DVD special features/menus.... but I have no first hand experience with one of these.

    Cool

You can now get a samsung Bluray for 349$ , and a hd dvd for 199$
Thats 550$ for both and you dont have to wait for january.
At719 thats quite a premium for ease of hookup.
I think this price war has dated your decision

    Yeah I know,
My problem is I only have enough room for one player and only have 1 set of 7.1 analog inputs on the reveicer which is the only way I can take advantage of the lossless Dolby TrueHD without having to get another received in the long run this will still be less expensive if I factor in a new receiver (high-end) and a new rack to shelve all the components I have.
Click on user gallery under my moniker to the left and you can see the rack I have is already full this unit will go where the Sony DVD player is now.
    Edit:
I forgot that I removed the closeup of the system because of a reflection or something I need to update the gallery but here from a distance you can see how full the rack is.

Its your money, but HDDVD is already starting to cave.
True, I am a Blu fanboy of sorts, but I would check into the 2008 release schedule
for HDDVD , I understand its really weak.
And you dont need to go "format" chasing, dont beleive all of the hype about
lossless DD, etc. These formats are still shaking themselves out, in a year or two we
will probably have one or two high q format, with a lesser, more lossey one for untilitarian purposes. Truth is, you wont be able to tell the diff between all of these formats, they will ALL sound fantastic.
Its just that there is cost in everything, and the "cost" of a "combi" player is usually
a compromised performance for BOTH formats.
This is why DVD players dont play CD discs very well, even the ones that say they do ,
while quite good sometimes, dont measure up to audiophile standards.
If this "format" war ends it will be on a dime, fast, inother words.
And you will have a very expensive player with a lesser playback for the winner and no need to play the other format.
I have bought several devices with performance and features I dont need, I still enjoy the stuff, but look at this useless feature, or that dusty button I never use, and it kinda spoils it, ya know? Kinda like the tuner on my receiver, I have NEVER used it, but I sure paid for
it, as well as a feature called nettune, never used it. Sure paid for it, tho.

Yeah I am willing to take the chance.
If it were not for this combi player I would not have even bought into the HD format war and opted out of both completely. Now that combi players are coming available I expect that the format war is over and I predict there will be many more to come in the near future that will be a lot more affordable than the first players...par to the technology.
My thinking is that I if Its a movie I want now be it HDVD or Blu-Ray I can just grab it take it home and play it I wont have to just wish the format war will come to a close and then wait for that movie to come out on the type of player I have.

And which ever format wins out I will still be able to play all HD movies I already own.
Heck I still have a LD player and still use it.
This combi player is supposed to do anything any of single player on the marked can.
I expect to have some early adoption glitches with this unit just the nature of the beast I'm not usually an early adopter but this time I am going for it.
Sure there will be features I may or may not use but when I bought my receiver back in 2000 the 7.1 surround was not even available on most (affordable) DVD players even to date there are still too few 7.1 encoded DVD titles available.
So with my receiver I can still take advantage of future technology with out having to replace it as long as they do not go beyond 7.1 and as long as those players have analog 7.1 outputs.
So yeah still going to be the pincushion just cant help myself I must have this unit.

I only paid 488.88 from musiciansfriend.com but it was a very rare price match when told them the price and gave the website (it has to be from verifiable authorized dealer) I thought I heard them drop the phone.
And I so can not find and/or remember the original site that I got them match that price from.
I have looked and it was and still is an beatable price.
I got real f/n lucky because the other company did not have free shipping and Musicians friend does.
I thought I had posted it here Turntable Pro Vs Audiophile
But I dont see were I went in to much detail about the site.

If your looking into getting one new, there is a big improvement with the M5G over the 1200MK2 & 1210MK5.

    Thanks.
I find that direct drive sounds better , at least to me.
The longevity of both of mine (the direct drive is 25 years old) bodes well for yours.

    Getting it today

Well my preorder was delayed again and when I called today he still could not give me any idea when it will ship.
So I started looking for it elsewhere.
And Holy Cow I found it only a few blocks away, the only one in a 75 mile radius a local Circuit City had one (only one) in stock.
So I canceled the preorder and yeah I am paying more to have it now but what the heck I want now.
They have it right now for me to pick up at the counter SWEET
The down fall of my impatience is it is 80.99 + tax 66.00 more than my preorder was.

I will post my assessment of the unit after I have had some time with it.
First movie I am going to play TRANSFORMERS!

    so far

I stayed up Way too late last night playing with it.
There was some kind of firmware that downloaded directly from the internet it did not say what it was or what it was supposed to do be upgrading.

Razor sharp picture on both HD-DVD & Blu-Ray to be honest I can not tell the difference between the two.
The picture is better that anything I have seen from OTA HD or DirectTv HD maybe because it is direct? IDK.
SD-DVD picture is also just amazing!
Sound is clear and powerful from all formats.
HD-DVD internet interactivity is really cool but I still have to learn more on that.
Even If I had paid a 1000.00 for this unit it would still be worth every penny.
Well if any of you have questions about this unit I will do my best to answer them.
