Thanks Feanor...yeah the Macs look good but most importantly to my ears they sound great. The combo of the tube pre amp and muscular solid state amp really works for me. Took a lot of trial and error to really nail down the sound i was looking for but now I'm finally I'm able to sit down, turn on the rig, listen for hours and be totally content.

Oh yeah the rack is a Sonus Sytems Elite. They're located somewhere in England...there's a few different choices of colored glass and rack finishes to choose from, it was a little pricey but was pretty much what the doctor ordered when I got it.

Yeah, whatta typo. That was on my phone, which is proving to be challenging. I meant, "A man of few words but nice equipment", referring to shoddy, not me.

I got a rare chance on these shores to hear the Harlechs. Castle makes good stuff and with Mac I'm sure they're very, very nice.

...not really familiar with EAD...heard the rumors, listened to the rep-talk but never heard an actual player. They must be good though, I can't imagine one putting so much work into a system and accepting a compromise.

I had a EAD T-1000 transport with my Audio Note DAC. I loved that T-1000. Unfortunately it just quit one day. I gave it away because I didn't want to spend the money to get it fixed. I probably should have just picked another off Audiogon, it would have been much cheaper than the route I took. Reviews I read of the EAD DAC/transport combo said it was, "very good but mellow, good for acoustic and light music but not much bite for things like Rolling Stones." The quote is paraphrased some.

I've basically got a Rotel system which,for my budget, does the trick.
(RB1080 Pwr,RC1070 Pre,RDV1045 CD,Rega Planar 3w/RB-300 Tonearm-Sumiko Blue Point,Sony RCD8500C CD Recorder,MonsterHTS1600 Surge Protection,Paradigm Studio 20& Vandersteen 1B Speakers,MIT Spkr Wires & Interconnects throughout.2/3 the time I
am playing vinyl,and the rest is cds'.I hope this answers your question.

Also recently I've been using a Burwen TNE700A Transient Noise Eliminator I purchased in the service many years ago to remove ticks & pops in less than perfect vinyl.Yeah!!

Arcam AVR 200, Mirage Nanosat, for speaker wire I use Radio Shack insulated wrapping wire 30-gauge, RBH TS-10AP subwoofer, 12' Analysis Plus Sub Oval subwoofer cable, Marantz DV 6001 Super Audio CD/DVD player, Audio Quest digital coaxial audio interconnect and Audio Quest component video interconnects (model#'s ?, threw out the boxes long ago), and APC surge protection.

Mr. Peabody, I had the Cambridge 640 for about 1 week for home audition earlier this year. I could never get over the slow pacing of the unit, and found it unit to be lacking in some upper end detail, and also I preferred more bass punch. I took it back to the audio dealer and have not missed it at all. However, I do think the 640 has better separation of instruments with regard to sound staging.

The NAD 545, in my opinion, gives a great deal of upper end detail without sounding bright, mids are surprisingly very good, and bass is much better than the 640 (although I would still prefer a little bit more tightness in the bass). Pacing is outstanding on the 545. The unit has a very cool feature that I did not know it had until after I bought it. If you are into recording onto a disc from your PC then there is a special section of the remote that allows you to pick files/folders and you can set your play list from it or let the player simply play everything on the disc for hours....I don't download music from my PC so I don't know exactly how it works but I know it's there.

About 3 weeks ago I took the 545 to the audio dealer who still has the 640 hooked up to Bel Canto integrated amp, and Reference 3A speakers. My audio retailer also found the 545 to be preferable to the 640 during the same listening session with him. I left the 545 with him for 4 days and in the end he still favored the NAD.

The 545 is the best CD Player for the price range, IMO. The only thing I wish was different is the power cord. I will be looking to upgrade the power cord next year and it's gonna have to be a custom job....

Thanks LeRoy that helps a lot. There's a place blowing some 640's out at $349.00 but I have to live with the unit so I will spend the extra money and pick up the NAD. I'm also looking close at the Emotiva. I think I'll start a new thread with this, hope you'll drop in.

Another player you might consider trying out is the Rotel RDV-1045,which I picked up this past spring. After about a 30-50hr burn in,the unit just opened up for me.Great soundstage,not overly bright,with a sincere bottom end.I got it from the dealer for $299,and that included a nice pair of MIT wires.Very solid unit.

My equipment is in my signature and is pretty easy to read. I know it is humble stuff but I am working on bettering it. Highend 64 what dayton drivers did you use in your diy speaker. I modified the crossovers and installed a pair of dayton 1 1/8" soft dome tweeters and these humble speakers sound better than they ever have when new. I am also getting ready to start a Usher diy project and its good to hear that someone else believes in the diy thing. Very cool.
