I think you can certainly use the V700 as a monitor phone. But it's got a chopped treble and a boosted midbass so you won't hear a lot of high end information, and the low bass tends to get lost in the midbass. Rather like a cheap pair of speakers. If you're mixing for the low end of consumer audio (mini systems, etc), I suppose the V700 might work. It's not very comfortable either, but does look cool though

If you're mixing for a wide range of speakers, then I've been told that the Beyerdynamic DT770-250 is a good bet, and I find them physically comfortable but sonically very fatiguing. The HD280 is comparatively neutral, and I've heard varying degrees of happiness about it for mixing purposes. I could take it or leave it but my uses are listening, not mixing. Many guys seem to like the Ultrasone range too for mixing purposes.

I wouldn't recommend the bose triports. You can easily find something priced less than their $150 that blows them away. Try some sennheisers.

You should have kept those V700DJ's. You're screwed now.

I can tell you right now that the Sennheisers will blow the 700s out of the water! I know, I have them both. Even my senn px200s sound much better. I bought the senn 580s to replace the 700s because i was sick of getting headaches after 20 minutes of use. Buy the senns, you will realize how much you were loosing with the 700s.

BTW - The 700s are great for djs, I use them all the time for mixing because all i need to hear is the high hats or drums. People should realize that is exactly what these phones are made for, dont buy them for casual listening. THEY ARE DJ HEADPHONES!
