Many excellent "road movies" have been named. Here are 5 - at least 3 of them are in my top 5 along with others already mentioned:

    1. Death Race 2000
    2. Wild at Heart
    3. Fandango
    4. Wizard of Oz - don't tell me this is not a "road" movie!
    5. Rat Race - thrown in for its laughs. It's late. If I come up with another one. I might replace this one.

Man, how could have I forgotten about Midnight Run or Vacation: two of my all time favorites. Midnight Run has definitely got to qualify, as I think a core feature of the road movie is the chemistry between the characters and the conflicts that arise from an otherwise theoretically boring premise: traveling.

Gumball Rally: I agree with Worf, it's the best of the x-country race and most closely follows Brock Yates' actual Cannonball Baker race, right down to the Ferrari Daytona (just without Dan Gurney).

Fandango: A great movie with an even better soundtrack...if they would have made the damn thing !

Dutch: One of my favorite movies during the holidays.

    Great Race: Classic

Planes, Trains, and Automobiles: Don't know if this counts, but it certainly is a traveling movie

some stretches, and not so far stretches....

but all the good ones are taken!

does Road to Perdition count? they kinda went on a road trip.

how about Rain Man? they kinda went on a road trip too.

Kingpin? they kinda went on a road trip as well.

Tommy Boy? another good one with some driving.

Wild at Heart/Blue Velvet? gotta mention a david lynch movie and nicely tie in another thread's discussion.
