Help! I keep buying vinyl!!!

Now that I have my Dual changer up and running well, my buying addiction is encompassing 78s. Like I needed that. Anyway, my latest find were at a thrift store stop over the weekend that yielded 5 albums with about a dozen records each and 20 singles discs, all 78s, mostly western swing, Spade Cooley, Bob Wills, Tex Ritter, Earnest Tubb, etc... Been having a ton of fun slapping stacks of them on the changer. Gotta get to cleanin' 'em up soon so I can get a better listen without all the dirt and grime in those old grooves. The whole collection looks pretty darn nice condition wise though. The discs look in really nice shape underneath a layer of dirt, not all scratched up or anything. I did leave behind a couple stacks of square dance records and an album full of Doris Day and Dinah Shore records though.

I'd recommend the KAB EV-1 at KAB ELECTRO ACOUSTICS if you're looking for a record cleaning machine on a tight budget.

Well it seems I am listening to less and less vinyl these days, but maybe this score will help solve that problem. Apologies about the shoddy pic. The Clark Terry - "Swinging" was still sealed. I am most excited about the Ruby Braff, it's my first LP of his.

Poppa nice score!!! How is that Hubert Laws record; I have always wondered? You have been absent from the vinyl zone? Life is getting in the way, huh? That Tatum looks like it is on Pablo, which is an under appreciated label.

I have been buying a lot more cd's because I got a cheap PS1 and I have scored a lot of dollar cds that were finds in the thrift stores. I think cds will be the new treasure finds second hand because everyone is dumping them for mp3s.

I have been buying a lot of records in the last year and gear as well (good grief).

Maybe, the count for the last year has been 150 lps.

Here in L.A. there is a roaming swap meet in the various cities that comprise the greater Los Angeles area every weekend. The one near me in Pasadena is on the first Sunday of every month. I save my money each month for it and I will post about it with some pictures after the next one in a couple of weeks.

I will post pics of the swap meet and some of the finds after the first Sunday of November. This swap meet is the best in the large L.A. area, it is a local tradition.

That was when they had Kenny Clark...the original MJQ. Good score it seems...how does it sound?

I like Connie Kay more so than Kenny Clark though....but that's just me. I thought Kay was smoother ...and I love the stuff Connie Kay did with Paul Desmond.

That MJQ record is amazingly quiet. Unbelievable. And just leaps out of the speakers. Sounds beautiful. There's a 2nd one I might have to go back and get. With the coupon and tax it's $7.78, brand new and sealed.

What year was that MJQ recorded? I think Kenny Clark was only with them for their first two or three recordings before he moved on. Late 50's or early 60's,

That one says it was "recorded between 1952 and 1954". Rather than pick up the 2nd one like it, I decided to go with a used copy of this:

I haven't gotten into it well enough yet, but that's why I bought this record...to compare. Too bad this one isn't as quiet as the other one.

They both are great drummers...but I happen to love Connie Kay....so smooth in my opinion. He fit right in with Paul Desmonds sound.

I think this comment sounds about right, they were both great with different approaches. Kay was a better fit for what MJQ were doing. Klook moved to Europe and recorded with the best of the best out there.

02 that Pyramid LP has been sitting on a shelf of a shop I go to for some time now. Should I buy it? I'm not the biggest fan but I enjoy them from time to time.

Anyhow guys my comp has been down for a couple weeks now, I am posting from my Blackberry. Also, my wife's father passed away so things have been crazy here at home. Sorry I have been so elusive.

No comp means vinyl all day long now. Been listening to lots of Basie lately. Keep em spinning!

It's not blowing me away. I'm just exploring. I've never owned any of their records and those re-issues at Half-Price Books never fail me. I liked that re-issue so well I thought I'd grab another. But then frenchmon mentioned a preference for Connie Kay over Kenny Clarke in MJQ, so I changed to a different album. In hindsight, it turned out well.

I noticed in an earlier post that you had an Atlantic Jazz comp record. How is it? Is that a collection of sessions produced by the great Tom Dowd? His Atlantic productions are suppposed to be technically beautiful. I will look for that one.

I have been doing great scoring classical vinyl at various Goodwill and St. Vincent De Paul. I love a lot of Classical music and when you find it used, its usually in pretty good shape. I also hit Jerry's in Pittsburgh. He has roughly one million classical and turntables throughout the store for test spinning. What a place. when you
enter the store there are stacks and stacks of local collections he buys sight unseen. My wife gets sick in there from the mold and dust of the many millions of records. I could live there.

I have an aching back that keeps me at home a lot. Playing records is good therapy for me.

SPEAKING on the MJQ, i suggest strongly that y'all get a listen to 'blues on bach'. truly great stuff and if you have a setup that reaches into the sonic basement, it will bring much satisfaction.

What do you think of the James Blake? I like that you picked up Los Lobos, Galaxie 500,
Kraftwerk, and Little Anthony; you have good diverse taste. Quality!

I like the James Blake. Have been listening to a download for a while and wanted to check out the vinyl sound and it's quite nice. I'm really not a huge fan of his vocals and am more interested in the music on that album, especially the bass. The vocals don't distract me too much, but they're not at all the draw for me. And actually the first time I heard it I was listening on tiny laptop speakers and thought the whole thing was rather boring until I heard it on a bigger setup where you could get into the bass on there. I honestly prefer Mount Kimbie, a group that works with a very similar collection of sounds and that big bass rumble but has a lot of instrumental tracks. They've actually done a bit of work together as well with both remixing each other's stuff.
