    Question Turntable speeds

    I know nothing about turntables.

If a turntable has speeds of 33 and 45 with a 7, 10 & 12 inch platter can you play a 78 or do you have to have that speed? Can you buy a "device" that would let you play a 78 on that type unit?

    Thank you

First, you need a turntable that rotates at 78 RPM.

Solve that and then the rest will fall into place.

Thorens used to make an inexpensive turntable that would play 33 1/3, 45 and 78. Rega makes a 78 rpm only player. The 7,10 and 12 settings turntables used to have were for the automatic tonearm so it would know how far to move before lowering to the record and does not have anything to do with the speed. I do not know of any add ons for 78 rpm speeds. Welcome

It goes futher than just speed...

...but, as markw stated, you need a 78rpm setting o-r i-t w-i-l-l s-o-u-n-d m-u-ch s-l-o-w-e-r and the pitch will drop roughly an octave or more...

Then we get into the whole stylus shape and how modern eliptical styli may bounce around the wider/deeper grooves or the cantilever itself may contact the record's surface...

So, no, there is no add-on device that will do this and folks who do have a collection of 78s(as I do) usually will have a tt/cart combo dedicated specifically for this purpose...and then of course we have the different EQ curves involved...don't ask...

And good luck trying to find someting to play those 16rpm Lithuanian language lessons...

In lieu of buying a tuntable with 78 rpm speed (of which The Needle Doctor sells a few) check out this product: http://www.dak.com/reviews/2020story78.cfm?G78

...does kinda blow the concept of "analog audio" out the window, though.

But just think of all the "hidden messages" you could find with that level of tinkering available!

Now that is an interesting product.
When someone says, "Trust your ears" or "Hearing is believing", consider this: Do you thoughtlessly trust your eyes when you see a stick inserted halfway in water? If you don't trust your eyes without thinking, why would you trust your ears without thinking? I recommend not mindlessly trusting your sensory organs, but engaging your brain before you make a decision.
