Hello, just picked up 4 mini advents at the Salvation Army for $18. 2 need new gaskets, but the cabinets and cloths are in good shape. Here is my question....What do you think about using them as fronts and rears in a surround sound system? Would the fact that they are not magnetically sheilded be a problem? I'm trying to put together an inexpensive surround sound system for my son. Thanks!

Magnetic shielding is not required for LED/LCD/Plasma screen flat panel tV's. Only the old school CRT TV's were affected.

Found a rather rare pair of US made speakers. This company has been around the mid 60's and according to their website their primary market has been Europe were they supposedly have a very good following. Based on limited listening of them (David Sanborn-Dire Straits-Pink Floyd and Neil Young) I can certainly see why. I know these are below his normal price point but if he sees this post perhaps Flo can confirm what their reputation is in Europe.

Also pictured here is a Denon DCM-420. This is the second one of these I have picked up this month. A very good piece and the second one I grabbed still had the remote.

Seems the company is now run by the founder's son.
He is member over on AK where I found some threads which indicate these are highly regarded.

Are those from the KG series?

If you have or come across a tube amp a lot of Klipsch speakers seem to benefit from a tube source.

BTW- I think you should just rename this thread the Daks-Kid Audio Journey. seems like we are about the only ones who post here..............

Hmm I will try them with my Dynaco tube amp to see what sound I will get.

They are the KG 3..5 speakers!

I will be interested in your thoughts running with tubes.

When I had my Klipsch Heresys I thought the tube amp I had added a little more to the lower end.
Heresys tended to be little light on the lower end and my guess is that if your 3.5's are similar to my KG 4's they cover the lower end pretty well.

I wish I could, but how can I when you guys are grabbing all the goodies up!!? I swear, I'm either in the wrong town (probably) or you guys just have a knack at being @ right place @ right time (has to be more than luck involved). I read every post and enjoy the thread. Not buying any vintage gear of late - so no posts. I'll post up some pictures of my main system when it hits the final configuration - plenty of vintage gear there.

A friend of mine has the Marantz SR4400. He loves it! A very nice receiver. Nice pick up Dak!

Interesting I would have thought it would be the opposite but my knowlwdge of Polks is pretty much limited to the older Monitor series.

I know the Polk Audio RTA-11T would have had the opposite, they sound totally different than the R50 towers!

Yeah, you guys seem to find all the stuff! Do you stake out the pawns, thrifts and auctions continuously around the clock? How can you come up with so much nice gear so often? I'm only finding nice stuff maybe onece a year if I'm lucky. I found these two tanks recently.

It is interesting that despite the 3-drivers in those that they are considered only 2-way's.
A very versatile speaker that works well for Music and HT. Not as detailed I think as the Heresy's I had but a definite improvement over the Heresy on the low end.

Charlie - I don't stake them out but I have about 6-7 different thrifts within 20 minutes of me that I am able to visit regularly. Last weekend I scored a Sony ES receiver and an Tascam Tape/CD player-recorder for the princely sum of $ 25.........

CL in my area has also been a huge supplier of gear. My KG 4's were incorrectly listed by the seller as "Kilpsch FB" speakers and they only wanted $75.

It is amazing that in these days of instant information many people do not research what they have. But then again I have found some bargains on CL where the seller did know what they had but just priced it to sell so they could get rid of it quickly.

here comes the other pile, the sansui cassette deck will make my AU/TU-717 complete now!

the picture is when I got them, I cleaned and changed the bulbs on the marantz receivers, cleaned the pots and adjusted the idle and dc offset, they are 2235B and 2325!!!!

I have not heard a bad a 22XX series Marantz receiver.

Wow... dak you're cleanin up my man!! KG4's, Marantz 22xx... but i am most intruiged by that tape player. It has the laser sensor right? I want a great tape player for ripping to my computer, but I have yet to run across one. Almost pulled the trigger on a pro Sankyo, but the voltage was set for Britain and I didn't want to get into the whole conversion for one piece of gear.
