Got me a copy of Steve Cole, Stay Awhile. This title is out of print for some reason. Very smooth.

Just picked up this little ditty. Such pleasant happy music. Hadn't knowingly heard Charlie Byrd (guitar) before although from the liner notes I see that he helped put bossa nova on the map with Stan Getz. This album is live and has latin influence throughout, although it's more in the jazz trio mode than the bossa mode. It's got some swing, some latin flare, and some more standard jazz playing. Picked it up new for $3 (CD).

Which brings up a question I've had for years and years but never figured out - surprising since I've bought so many. What's the deal with cut outs? This disk has a little hole drilled in the case rather than the cut out. But I've never understood why cut outs exist in the first place. Anyone?

Good question. I always thought it was to devalue it since the price dropped or distinguish it from the higher priced original priced copies.

Kennedy, AKA Nigel Kennedy, is a violinist of first rank, and his performances are simultaneously reviled and revered by lovers of classical violin who are looking for a fresh interpretation of old music. Traditionalists may well hate him: his tone is sometimes excessive, his speed nearly manic; but for those who see works of the old masters as living documents, Kennedy's approach might not be so inappopriate. In the recording presented here, Kennedy plays a number of standards, including the D minor Concerto for Two Violins, with a restraint and presence that is nearly haunting. Flourishes of exuberance are abundant, but not to the extent that they dominate the rest of the performance that is supple, rich and very absorbing. The recording is up to par with the performance, with a quiet background that is nearly black and a stage that is well contained and not at all distracting. Folks may be put off by Kenndy's punk-rock persona, but this is no flunky manque; Kennedy is a scholar who knows his music as well if not better than most, and he serves it in grand, delicious form here. Bon appetit!

If you've never heard of Leonard Cohen take a listen sometime, and if you've dismissed him as music to slit your wrists to, have another listen because this is truly uplifting, almost spiritual and on these live discs' evidence, sung by an all time great. So when a 70 year old sings.....

Everybody knows that the dice are loaded
Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed
Everybody knows that the war is over
Everybody knows the good guys lost
Everybody knows the fight was fixed
The poor stay poor, the rich get rich
    That's how it goes
    Everybody knows

    ....one sits and listens.

Ya gets a greenie for pullin' out this gem. There was a Leonard Cohen concert on HDNet recently. It was fantastic if your a fan. I find Chris Rea has a lot of songs in the LC flavour, worth checking out his "Blue Cafe" album if you can. BTW, my avatar is the cover art for this CR LP. Cheers

Leonard Cohen's music, IMHO, is an acquired taste....But once you catch on, your buds are never the same, and you just want more of it! Haven't heard this one; no doubt it's a beaut, tho'!

or, perhaps, one just slits one's wrists...

(as a member of the wrist slitting class of Cohen listeners, I'll likely continue to defer but I'll consider re-considering)

Thank you very much. That London concert is so well recorded and full of quality. It is hard to believe how old L.C. is. I also like Chris Reas' blues stuff. Haven't got the disc you mentioned, but I have some 11 disc box set of his blues stuff. Anyway your blues discs still giving pleasure over here.

Since we are in singer/song writer mode. I have just pulled this one. If you don't get on with Mr. Zimmermanns nasal musings, check this tribute album out.

I think...When the retailers return unsold copies the manufacturer physically cuts them and then re-sells them at a low-cost rate for the bargain bins.

A departure from all things frantic with his Pumpkin buddies.

Lovely lilting songs about love and other nice things. Lots of jangling guitars and strings.

excellent album! Haven't listened to this in awhile but loved it in the day...I'll need to find this one again now that you've reminded me.

I just picked up the new Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest. Really gorgeous! swelling harmonies and tightly played folky-ness with some psychedelia seeping in around the edges and Nico Mulhy-orchestrated nuances. The vinyl sounds quite awesome too.

Documentarian Albert Maysles shot this film, Gypsy Caravan, in Macedonia, India, Macedonia, Spain and North America, which is a vivid and evocative snapshot of the Roma People, their culture, and their amazing and fresh musical heritage. Little need is there to remind us that the Roma, otherwise known as The Gypsies, are a diverse civilization that has been continually maligned throughout history. Their music pours the pathos of these people out, expressing all the hopes, the suffering and the joy of a hardy and indominatable people. Their faces, at once noble and beautiful and expressive carry the lines of life with a quiet dignity. This movie is a feast for the lover of a good story and of music with real vitality. I watched it this morning with my wife, immersed in my own self-pity, and regained some strength from their example. I was reminded of what I learned (but momentarily forgot) from patients who have survived in the face of so much hardship and pain: that resiliency comes when the steel is beat and the fire is the hottest. If you're feeling down, watch this movie my friends, and restore yourselves.

So, I broke into the palace
With a sponge and a rusty spanner
She said : "Eh, I know you, and you cannot sing"
I said : "That's nothing - you should hear me play piano"

    Melody Gardot

In that same general area as Adele, Duffy, Madeleine Peyroux...sometimes vaguely reminds me of Bonnie Raitt and occasionally Norah Jones.

Ahhh. I used to spin that back in the day.
    Brings back great memories.

    NP: Fragile (Analog Production).

This album definitely works better with a pair of Fostex.

So I hear Brian May is hoping to discuss with Adam Lambert the possibility of Adam joining the band to assume the lead singing duties.

Adam Lambert was the runner-up in the most-recent American Idol. As much as I love Alison, I'm not sure I'm ready for her to sing Fat-Bottomed Girls.
