    A little Greek music....

A real departure for me this week.

This past Saturday I went with some friends to see George Dalaras in concert, at Roy Thomson Hall.

Dalaras, in many ways, is to the Greek-speaking world what Sinatra is to the English-speaking world.
The show clocked in at over 3 hours & the legend known as George Dalaras showed up to play & sing.
Unfortunately, his voice is showing signs of age; but a good time was had by all.

So........this week's listening has been rather exclusively focused:

George Dalaras - I Megaliteres Epitihies tour Yiorgou Ntalara
George Dalaras - Afieroma Ston Tsitsani
George Dalaras - I Maides I illi Mou

    Cheers,

***en - Morph The Cat, great production but talk about a time warp. This is lounge music you could get away with in the 70's/80's but sadly now sounds bad.

Electric President - Electric President, twee synth pop, home produced but so many layered sounds to enjoy.

SR Vaughan - Sky is Crying, Little Wing just got stuck on repeat.

    Calexico - Garden Ruin

    Cheers

They really ought to fix that. His name does come up here often enough.

Never mind moderators a spell checker would be more useful...

Anybody heard that latest Secret Machines album Ten Silver Drops, it's not too dissimilar to their debut but somehow different, I've been playing it a lot recently.

    Cheers

The new Secret Machines hits the stores on Tuesday here in the states. I'll buy it automatically.

As far as my own new listens are concerned...

The week was dominated by the latest Built to Spill disc, You In Reverse. It is an excellent album overall, with several tracks being immediately enjoyable and others loaded with grower potential. Like I said after my first listen, this may well be an early candidate for AOTY.

I also downloaded KT Tunstall's debut disc, Eye to the Telescope, for my daughter. It's the sonic equivalent of a cherry popsicle on a warm summer's day. Not terribly challenging, but consistently charming. Solid songwriting and singing.

Those were the only new ones for me. I'll provide my indescribably obvious analysis of the Secret Machines next week.

I know, but it should be easy enough to make an exception, so that people who are here to discuss music rather than hacking can get on with it. You know -- if F-A-G and not F-A-G-E-N then censor, etc.

    Hey, Mike.

Glad to hear that the latest Secret Machines album is up to snuff. It'll be an auto-buy for me, too, when it hits our shores. Can't wait.

    Cheers,

Good day to one and all

Thursday is usually "new music day" for me but (boring) meetings have forced me to postpone the fun. Currently spinning on a late lunch:Memphis Slim's-Blue Memphis
About ten years ago, I saw Chris Spedding at an impromptu stop at TGO. This disc doesn't relly act as a showcase, but I was particularly impressed by his playing on that eve--especially in a genre that I don't generally regard as a favorite.

Easing in to an extended weekend...

    np:John Coltrane--Lush Life
This, along with Miles' 'Kind of Blue', could be considered the gateway drug for those who find jazz impenetrable. Heavily infused with blues tonal structure, [I]Lush Life retains the essential polyrythms of jazz while eschewing the atonal stuff that is so off-putting to many. IMO the baleful mournings of the tenor sax on 'Like Someone in Love' and 'Trane's Slo Blues' are worth the price of admission on their own. And, of course, the R. Van Gelder remasters are topnotch SQ.

    Cheers

I've listend to Kind of Blue several times and just don't get it . Yet Sketches of Spain I like and play often. Go figure.

Anyway the weekend has started and some great boogie tunes are hitting my lobes provided by:

"Candy Kane - White Trash Girl".

    comment and query

Now spinning:Albert King's I'll Play The Blues For You (SACD)

I'm close enough to Chicago that I get to see quite a fair amount of live blues. That said, it rarely makes it into the system at home though lately I have been trying to incorporate it into my diet. I'm finding that SQ is a crapshoot. Any suggestions while yer spinnin'?

Hey all, didn't realize it's been a couple of weeks since I last posted, time flies. Been wrapped up exploring the many flavors of Jazz lately - gotta say Jazz is one tough nut to crack, but I'm getting there. Kicked back right now with George Shearing ~ Like Fine Wine.

Up next is Dave Brubeck ~ Park Avenue South, a live session with a great performance of Take Five and many other Brubeck favorites.

Streaming last night's edition of Blueprint (ambient and soul grooves) from KCRW's website. Host Kevin Lincoln played some wicked jams on that program.

The Chi-Lites: A Lonley Man is spinning as I type this...Love Is would be the song playing right now...the albums on its second spin on the evening. If you like that smooth soul sound of the early 70s...this is a MUST HAVE album from 1972.
