    Seminal is a funny word...

but for some reason I always seem to buy the very next album after an artist's seminal album. A day late and a loonie short, I guess...

So it goes with Ryan Adams - Gold album. What a peice of crap! I think quite a few of us bought this stinker. Probably because it came out just after dbi/Davey sent out his Alt-Country comp with Come Pick Me Up on it, and that is such a great song, who would have thought Gold would be so uhhh... unlistenable?

And since I'm an over-achiever, Awtum, I also pulled out The Coast is Never Clear - Beulah. I vaguely remember someone on the board raaaaving about this one.

I like it. I like it better than I did before. I really like Popular Mechanics for Lovers. As a matter of fact, I really like the entire sugary pop album, but I kind of wish I had bought Heartstrings instead.

Oh, and for you wordsmiths, (at least for Dusty, although he prolly already knows) here's the definition for seminal :

    seminal adj.

    1. Of, relating to, containing, or conveying semen or seed.

    2. Of, relating to, or having the power to originate; creative.

    3. Highly influential in an original way; constituting or providing a basis for further development: a seminal idea in the creation of a new theory.

Containing semen = original, creative and influential!

Does this mean that a lesbian seminar is actually an "ovular"?

I recently picked up a copy of Gold. I quite like it. I picked it up after giving about a kajillion spins of a Ryan Adams comp that someone sent me (my apologies to whoever made this fantastic comp, I don't have it handy and can't remember who I owe my undying gratitude to ). My favourite tune on the comp was Goodnight Hollywood Blvd. So I figured that Gold would be a good place to start.

Unlistenable??? Now you've got me wondering what I'm missing. What Ryan Adams CD would you recommend? Or, is it Ryan Adams, in general, that you find unlistenable?

Ryan Adams - Gold: I really love Nobody Girl from this disc. Go back and play this again if you haven't given it much time.

I did listen to an album, but it was on Tuesday I think.

    Cavedogs: SOUL MARTINI

A great power-pop band that had strong R.E.M. and Beatles influences with some bluesy guitars here and there and an odd circus music fascination as well. Very tuneful, which is why I lean towards calling it power pop, but they're a little more diverse than some power pop bands I've heard. This album has their alterna-hit "Boy in the Plastic Bubble" - some of the indie vets around here might remember the song, which leans a little towards alt-country with it's twangy guitar line. This album came out in 1992 then they broke up. Bummer. Great band, their previous album JOYRIDES FOR SHUT-INS is also worth checking out. Definately worth the buck or two you'll pay for them if you see 'em. I have the vinyl of SOUL MARTINI and picked up the cd for a buck. Much easier to slap the tunes on a comp that way

I'll probably play, but I try to mix in the old with the new anyway. I'll probably get some driving time in this weekend, so it'll be a good opportunity to pull something out I haven't listened to in ages.

mmm I wonder if that was me, I seem to remember sending a few out last year. 'Undying gratitude' eh I'll try and think of something appropriate.

I still like Adams but he needs to look at quality over quantity. He plans to release 3 albums this year and the first one out is a double, just because you can record it doesn't always mean you should release it.

    1. Starting To Hurt (3:16) - Demolition
    2. Burning Photographs (3:22) – Rock ‘n’ Roll
    3. Desire (3:38) - Demolition
    4. Enemy Fire (4:07) - Gold
    5. Luminol (3:57) - Rock ‘n’ Roll
    6. Avalanche (5:01) – Love Is Hell Pt 1
    7. Answering Bell (3:02) - Gold
    8. Goodnight Hollywood Boulevard (3:22) - Gold
    9. Nuclear (3:19) - Demolition
    10. Come Pick Me Up (5:14) - Heartbreaker
    11. So Alive (2:59) - Rock ‘n’ Roll
    12. World War 24 (4:14) - Love Is Hell Pt 1
    13. La Cinega Just Smiled (5:00) - Gold
    14. Oh My Sweet Carolina (4:53) - Heartbreaker
    15. Sylvia Path (4:07) - Gold
    16. Thank You Louise (2:49) – Love Is Hell Pt 2
    17. Do Miss America (4:45) - Rock ‘n’ Roll
    18. This Is It (3:19) - Rock ‘n’ Roll

Elfman is such a weirdo. Every time I see it in print, your sig reminds me of that deep throaty voice of John Cale, speaking the Arthur Rimbaud words above in the opening of "Hunger" on Hector Zazou's Sahara Blue. Classic stuff in my mind warp

Yeah, he is. And I wish he was doing more stuff like that instead of the Desperate Housewives theme song.

Zazou albums are kind of like a mix of Brain Eno and Captain Beefheart, with a connection to more modern music like Dead Can Dance and the Cocteau Twins. Lots of guest musicians and vocalists like Bjork and Jane Siberry and John Cale and Laurie Anderson and many others. Probably not quite on your preferred path, but Sahara Blue is a big favorite of mine that I've mentioned a lot around here and comped pretty heavy. That John Cale song just made a recent appearance of my No Wow comp so it's still pretty fresh in my mind. It's more along the lines of early Captain Beefheart or Nick Cave. In fact, if you click on that link you'll see that I even sandwiched it on the comp by something from the last Calla album, which leans toward the dark side of Eno, and something from the recent Nick Cave album, although more upbeat than his usual. I'd offer you a copy, but I don't think I kept one for myself and I see that I've since deleted it from my drive too. Oh well, not the first time I've gone oop
