    That Lyrics Thread

One more drink tonight as your gray stallion rests
Where he lays in the reins
For all of the speed and the strength he gave

One more kiss tonight from some tall stable girl
She’s like grace from the earth
When you’re all tuckered out and tame

One more tired thing the gray moon on the rise
When your want from the day
Makes you to curse in your sleep at night

One more gift to bring we may well find you laid
Like your steed in his reins
Tangled too tight and too long to fight
So, I broke into the palace
With a sponge and a rusty spanner
She said : "Eh, I know you, and you cannot sing"
I said : "That's nothing - you should hear me play piano"

you tell me that I'm falling down
    a drifter with no role
you tell me that I need a friend
    to help me take control
well let it be I'm not alone
    I'm only lonely see
and you can't tell me where to go
or what or who to be

I am exactly what I am
and not the way you'd like to see me be
I look outside long as I can
then I close my eyes and watch
    my world unfold before me

I may not live a simple life
I've no love of my own
if no one gives me all his heart
    I'll manage with a loan
I'm very used to feeling sad
    it doesen't make me cry
and yes I do know how to love
so what you say's a lie

What I have here in my hand
Is like faith but not faith
For those without faith also have
What I have here in my hand

What I have here in my hand
    Is like feeling but deeper
    It's why I am here

What I have here in my hand
    Is knowledge without proof
What I have here in my hand
This is what I feel for you

It's why the earth is alive
    It makes electricity work
And fire dance in the sky..

    Feel it
Feel inside the atoms where the science breaks down
Feel inside the atoms where the science breaks down
If you don't believe in love
You'd have to make it up
You'd have to make it up
You'd have to make it up

What I have here in my hand
Is like faith but not faith
What I have here in my hand
This is what I feel for you

What I have here in my hand
    Is like knowing but deeper
    It's why I am here
    It's why I am here

Death has done her work this morning
Cutting me back down to size
    Frozen in this winter warning
    Gentle in it's own demise

    Starving sun in deep November
It cannot feed us any more
    Leaving us this dark reminder
Of things we should have done before

Even as our days are numbered
I can feel it getting near
Deafened by the sounds of others
Who only got as far as here

In the chilling of the evening
They find the ones that won't survive
    Taken as the day surrenders
While we fight to stay alive

Can you feel the summer ending?
Will this be the end of me?
Afraid of all that might have happened
And all that never came to be

Will you tell me when it's gone?
Will you tell me when it's over?
    Even though it's just begun
    Even though I'm going over

Death has done her work this morning
Cutting me back down to size

So what are you asking? Are we supposed to guess...

I just like 'em, do what you will...

...although I can see how my omission of title and artist to lead to yer querry.

I thought it was supposed to be a guessing game, though I too recognized the lyrics from Iron & Wine. I guess I could give names to my posts as well...

Father, you know where I have been
and you know what I have done
They say that you see everything
so you know I never hurt no one
What I have stolen won't be missed
by those who had so much, so long
We'll soon be laughing about this
They will never notice it was gone
And, I could bend the universe
If I can only get there first
There are some foolish fresh laid plans
My fate is firmly in your hands

Take If you must take me
But I can not go peacefully
I left someone waiting for me
    I left things terribly…
    undone

They say a man is just your seed
Spilled out on the thirsty earth
    simple servant of your needs
from the moment of our birth
Tell me am I not your seed?
Tell me am I not your son?
Tell me have you just forgotten
    All those years of devotion

    Take
    If you must take me
But I can not go peacefully
I left someone waiting for me
    I left things so terribly...

...Devotchka isn't discussed much here. I find them very interesting with all the unique instrumentation, well constructed songs, and, obviously, some solid lyrics. So many of us have heard them, and not necessarily by choice as they did many of the songs on the "Little Miss Sunshine' soundtrack, along with Sufjan Stevens.

    Good one.

I would rather suffer in sweet silent solitude
    Deathly defiant from drowning out
Filthy sounds stumbling ugly and crude
Between the lips of your beautiful mouth

Deep down within me words move in phrases
Frozen and still ‘til they decide
To melt and drip over the pages
Until that moment they live inside

My words enjoy the feel of the paper
Better than mingling with your consonants
Once they get going they never waver
And they slip in between your if, ands, and buts

When my words are hiding between the lines
Then I’m afraid they won’t hear me call
What if they fail me without a sign
What if they hardly surface at all

Screaming and throwing your weight around
My words choose knowledge over politics
You can’t kill my words, they know no bounds
My words are strong and they don’t make me sick

They still remain my only companion
Loyal and true to the very end
    They’ll never ever completely abandon
Ever give up the paper and the pen
Don't you like it on the sly? Don't you like it till it hurts? Have I been on your mind? What's a voice without a song?

I didn't know what love meant before
I didnt know what you had waiting for me in store
I didnt know that I'd be finding out so much more
about the knowing and the knowing is all there is
about yes and yes, this is it
    I didnt know

I didn't know what precious time would make
I didnt know how fragile a kiss could seem
I didnt know that finally all of dawn is trained
about the knowing and the knowing is all there is
about yes,and yes, this is it
    I didn't know

I didn't know I'd never look at life the same
I didn't know until i walked with you in the rain
I didn't know until i found out you felt the same
about the knowing and the knowing is all there is
about yes and yes, this is it
    I didn't know

I....didn't know until together we lay
I didn't know until you touched my soul that day
I didn't know that you would teach me in your own way
about the knowing and the knowing is all there is
about yes and yes, this is it
    i didnt know

    i didnt know
Don't you like it on the sly? Don't you like it till it hurts? Have I been on your mind? What's a voice without a song?

    And her hallway
    Moves
    Like the ocean
    Moves

At the head of the river
At the source of the sea

Sitting here now in this bar for hours
    Trying to write it down
Fitting in hard with harder to come
    Trying to fight it
    Down the river there's a
    ship will carry you
    Down river down stream
    Down the river there's a
    ship will carry the
    Dream
    Dream of the flood
    Down the river there's a
    ship will carry the
    Dream of the flood

    And her hallway...
As the water come rushing over
As the water come rushing in
As the water come rushing over
    Flood...Flood...

Push the glass, stain the glass
Push the writer to the wall
It may come but it will pass
    Some say we will fall
    Dream of the flood...
    Flood...

    And her hallway...

Oh, maybe, in terms of surrender,
On a backcloth of lashes and eyes
In a flood of your tears, in sackcloth
    And ashes and ashes and
    ashes and ashes
And ashes and ashes and lies...

    And her hallway...
    Like...
As the water come rushing in
As the water come rushing over

Sitting here now in this bar for hours
    While these strange men
    rent strange flowers
I'll be picking up your petals
    in another few hours
In the metal and blood, in
    the scent and mascara
On a backcloth of lashes and stars
In a flood of your tears, in sackcloth
    And ashes and ashes and
    secondhand passion
    And stolen guitars

    And her hallway...
As the water come rushing in
    (Like the sea)
As the water come rushing over
    (Dream of the flood)
In a flood of your tears, in sackcloth
    And ashes and ashes
    And ashes and ashes
    And ashes and ashes
And ashes and ashes and lies...

    As the water come
    rushing in, rushing in

At the head of the river
At the source of the sea

    And her hallway...
    Like...

    Flood...
So, I broke into the palace
With a sponge and a rusty spanner
She said : "Eh, I know you, and you cannot sing"
I said : "That's nothing - you should hear me play piano"

In heavy consternation I move across the hall
I pictured this so many times
    I wasn’t scared at all
but every time I got this far I never felt so small

My mind was full of questions
    of arguments and lies
but every word was melted down
when I looked in your eyes
and I don’t need these memories
    for now I’m mesmerized
and I’m staring down the barrel of my life

Now I’m entranced, you possess my full attention
how my thoughts dance freely on the journey
you intended all along, to somewhere I belong
like a pilot in the sky of dreams

Can you promise me the world
    and everything I need
Can you promise me the world.

Can you promise me a sky
    that’s trouble free and clear
so it’s safe for me to fly

But who can stop my plane (stop my plane)
from drifting out of range (far away)

Will this sky be precious to defend?
Will my sights go dark before the end?
Will I see the landing lights again?

Can you offer me the speed
    to travel like the wind
if I ever feel the need?

    Can you guarantee the sun
    won’t melt away my wings
    way before my journey’s done?

And who can stop my plane (stop my plane)
from drifting out of range? (far away)

Will this sky be precious to defend?
Will my sights go dark before the end?
Will I see the landing lights again?

drifting away out of the grey and out of control
such a nice day for drifting away

What became of the blue horizon?
Are you sure I was flying blind?
Never saw that the plane was diving
Never thought I was out of time
    And now I’m disenchanted
    You endure my disaffection
    All my systems running red
The radio is down and there’s trouble ahead

    Get me back down
I lost my way and I want to be grounded
    Get me back down
I lost my way coming out of the storm

Did I promise you a sky
    where rain would never fall
or did you listen to a lie?

    Did you radio to base?
    I waited for your call
but you left without a trace.

But I could stop your plane (stop your plane)
from drifting out of range! (far away)

Still this sky is precious to defend
Still your sights will last until the end
You will see the landing lights again

Now I’m entranced, you possess my full attention
how my thoughts dance freely on the journey
you intended all along, to somewhere I belong
like a pilot in the sky of dreams.

One sunny day I was riding my bike,
And smokin' a joint, 'cause that's what I like
A police man stopped me and began to stare,
And he said "Hey sonny, whatcha smokin' there?"

    I said..
It's a reefer, do ya want some, police man?
It's a reefer, do ya want a blast?
It's a reefer, do ya want some, police man?
Or would you prefer me to shove it up your ass?

Well he put me in his car and he left my bike,
And he took my reefer, which he quite liked
When we got to the station his eyes were all red,
And the Sergeant said "Constable, you're out of your head!"

    He said "Yeah!
It's a reefer, do ya want some, Sergeant?
It's a reefer, do ya want a blast?
It's a reefer, do ya want some, Sergeant?
Or would you prefer me to shove it up your ass?"

Well, he suspended the Constable for his little joke,
And he went to the bathroom to have a little toke
When he got back and rolled another eight,
And they were being passed 'round every copper in the place

Well, I sold them two ounces, and one sixteenth,
And they rolled the biggest joint that the world has ever seen

    And they all sang together...
It's a reefer, do ya want some, mindless,
It's a reefer, do ya want a blast?
It's a reefer, do ya want some, mindless,
Thanks for your company, and thanks for the grass!

I kind of figured it was a joke...

As for this thread, I don't want to read entire song lyrics as I don't have that much time on my hands. Why not just a couple favorite lines and leave it at that?

    Just wondering.
I call my bathroom Jim instead of John so I can tell people that I go to the Jim first thing every morning.

If you say the word 'gullible' very slowly it sounds just like oranges.

LOL, I don't think I've ever heard that one...
