Question Which one song would describe you right now?

I just discovered the original version of Here I Go Again from Whitesnake from the 1982 album Saints and Sinners. The older version that didn't originally make it to the US is so damn great in that it captures an almost gospel/blues genre where the song literally starts with what sounds like a church organ. To me it is much more heartfelt and powerful than the overblown version that was introduced in 1987 on the album Whitesnake. The guitars sound so sweet and less distortion works much better in this case. I always loved the lyrics of Here I Go Again but the original version takes the sadness and heartache to a whole new level. "Just another heart in need of rescue waiting on loves sweet charity." That sure describes me right now. What song or songs are really important or meaningful to you?

Here is a link to Saints and Sinners at Amazon. The liner notes are very interesting learning that David Coverdale wrote Crying in the Rain and Here I Go Again during the breakup of his first marriage.

Well, I'm transitioning into yet another job, so I guess the chaotic song Changes by Yes comes to mind.

I do agree that the versions of Crying In The Rain and Here I Go Again off of Saints & Sinners are better. Showy guitars and chimey keys inexorably link the s/t 1987 album to the year in which it was released. I had Slide It In within months of its release and then immediately picked up S&S. It was shame that the label made them change personnel right after Slide, apparently to more photogenic membership.

The first song that came to mind is Hoodoo Gurus' Waking Up Tired.

    Oh, the nights are long
And I'm so tired of waking up tired,
Man, they just drag on and on
And I'm so tired of waking up tired.
    The company I'm keeping
Won't let me get my sleep in.
    Oh, I hate the light
And I'm so tired of waking up tired.
The morning sun is getting way too bright
And I'm so tired of waking up tired.
If I was worth a fortune
    I'd never leave my bedroom
I just wanna stay right here, safe and sound.
    Oh, I have to go
But I'm so tired of waking up tired.

    "Sweet Side" by Lucinda Williams.

You run yourself ragged tryin' to be strong
You feel bad when you done nothin' wrong

Love got all confused with anger and pride
So much abuse on such a little child

Someone you trusted told you to shut up
Now there's a pain in your gut that you can't get rid of

No one heard your screams when you were nine
When bad dreams filled your summertime

So you don't always show your sweet side ...

You're tough as steel and you keep your chin up
You don't ever feel like you're good enough

You've had the blues ever since you were six
Your little tennis shoes and your pick-up sticks

You were screamed at and kicked over and over
Now you always feel sick and you can't keep a lover

Every Christmas there were presents to unwrap
But the things you witnessed when you were five and a half

So you don't always show your sweet side ...

Someone deserted you, the damage is done
Now you don't deserve to be loved by no one

Hands that would feed you when you were two
Were the same hands that beat you black and blue

You get defensive at every turn
You're overly sensitive and overly concerned

    Few precious memories no lullabies
    Hollowed out centuries of lies

So you don't always show your sweet side ...

I've seen you in the kitchen cookin' me supper
I listened to you b!tchin' I watched you suffer

I still love you baby 'cause I know you
Don't mean to do the cruel things you do

I've seen you sewin' buttons on your shirt
I've seen you throwin' up when your stomach hurt

I'll stick by you baby through thick and thin
No matter what kind of shape you're in

'Cause I've seen your sweet side ...

I kinda live in the Califone song "Bottles and Bones (Shade and Sympathy)", but I could probably say the same thing about a lot of Califone songs, or Richard Buckner songs, or Jason Molina, or ...

Bottle and Bones used to be a staple on some of the early comps I made around here, got a lumbering beat that picks up a little in the chorus, and then morphs a little, and never quite repeats. Funny that it got a place in the recent Will Farrel movie from a year or so ago, Stranger Than Fiction...

steal your sweet decline, this is the longest goodbye
aching to get your pocket picked
bottles and bones, shade and sympathy
kick the glass out of your path
calls you in, calls you in, calls you in

On song of the day in flac now in case you have an itch for the real deal ...

I like it, too. Although lately sleeping has been harder than staying awake. I'm more wired than tired.
