    Well I ain't no newbie

Finally have enough time to post in this thread, so I’ll take the opportunity to thank those responsible for recently received goodies, as well post about recent listenings.

A Can of Bees, The Soft Boys…I got this one from J a few weeks ago, and have been enjoying it immensely. Caught me off guard a little, reminds me a lot of a Brit Television, (the band, not the household appliance) good guitar bits, that veer somewhat close to wankery at times which surprises me, given J’s well known disdain for wankery of any kind, at least any musical kind. But Mr. Hitchcock’s tongue always seems firmly planted within his cheek, which gives the heavy guitar a light feel, if that’s possible. Whatever, me likes, and I will be searching out Underwater Moonlight, to help round out my collection of essential British prog-wave.

The Moog Cookbook…Ye Olde Space Band plays the classic rock hits, another disc compliments of J, that is just way too much fun. This one was a huge hit at my recent poker night; while the other boys were trying to identify the songs, I cleaned up at the table. Thanks J, your cuts in the mail.

Also got a fine comp from J called, “With Paralyzing Brute Force”, about as unique a mix of songs that I’ve ever encountered on a comp. I mean come on…Coleman Hawkins, Louis Prima and Porcupine Tree on the same 80 minute disc. Call me nuts but I love it, especially that Louis Prima song. Thanks for all of the above J. I’ve had a couple of discs burned and ready to send to you for a couple of weeks now, but just haven’t found the time to pull it together, soon, I promise.

Speaking of comps…I’ve been enjoying Slosh’s ’03 a lot as well, great mix that has helped me expand my “to buy” list by quite a few albums, standout songs…The Shins, Super Furry Animals, Enon, Wheat, Fruit Bats and DC for C, (is that the SACD?, Sounds good in redbook too, is the SACD a cut above?) Also been enjoying Tentoze’s ’03 disc, when I’m in a mellow mood. Superb job on this one too, there’s little if anything here that isn’t really good. The one’s that will probably jump to my wish list are; John Guilt, Jay Farrar, Holopaw, Woven Hand (really like this demented version of Ain’t no Sunshine), Richard Thompson, (I’m reading really good things about this album, “better than Mock Tudor” most are saying, do you concur? I loved Mock Tudor), My Morning Jacket, ?) (good to hear this much hyped band, finally), Tindersticks (How’s that album?), Ben Harper, and it’s good to know that Joan Armatrading is still making good music. Wonderful job guys, thanks.

I’m listening now for the second time to Jim’s non-mystery, mystery disc. Took me ‘til song two to place that distinctive voice of Ms. Faithful. Not a bad little disc I’d say, I like the Beck cover, the afore mentioned 2nd song sounds like it could be an outtake from Broken English, and I can never get enough of hearing the word “snatch” as in “You spit on my snatch”, in a music lyric.

Also, got 2 psuedo- Bunnymen albums from a new friend on another board, both are excellent, Evergreen is from ’97 and sounds a lot like the recent release Flowers, but with a harder edge. Also sent me a great album by a band called Electrafixion, that I’m really enjoying, this is from the early ‘90s and is a Ian McCulloch/Will Sargeant reunion album, post solo albums, pre-Bunnymen reformation albums. It’s a bit dated, sounds a little like Bunnymen do Seattle, but the guitar playing is excellent and it’s nice to hlear McCulloch let loose a little, vocally, like he did in the early ‘80s. If you’re a Bunnymen fan and missed this album, as I did, I don’t think you’d be disappointed.

Also listened to my first Weezer album, (s/t) still early, but my first impression is “eh, nothing special” and my first Dropkick Murphy’s album, (latest), which I like; an appropriately raucous slice of Irish-tinged punk.

It’s nice to get long-winded on the net once in a while.

This one's new to me, and I'm impressed. Youthful exuberance and a lot of fun.

I got a little lazy and just ripped the CD layer, mainly because it sounds nearly as good. The SACD layer is just a bit more...everything. A bit more dynamic range, a bit more extension (at both ends), a bit more instrument separation/spacial cues, a bit more smoothness, etc. I don't really think this is the type of recording that can show what SACD can do but since Barsuk is only asking $2 US more than the CD-only version might as well go for the hybrid (there's supposed to be a double LP version as well).

As far as Enon goes it is a solid album but nowhere near as good as High Society IMO. I have no complaints about the others you have listed (although the only Wheat I have is the EP Davey offered earlier this year but he seems to like the album so...)

Thanks, Tamer. After relistening to that comp, I realised I had leaned pretty hard on quieter stuff. I do still rock out from time to time in my old age, despite what that comp might lead you to believe.

The Woven Hand cd is really better than the limited number of times I've devoted to listening to it thus far. Thompson's latest is as good as anything I've heard him do (and that's a lot), and definitely a notch above Mock Tudor, IMO. Tindersticks is also good, even though it sounds like all the other ones I've heard.

I plan on playing more music than buying, for a change, for the next little while.

If you like silly covers, I also recommend the Opium Jukebox series of tribute albums. It's a completely different concept, though -- they're all done in the style of Indian raga music. They (well, really, Martin Atkins) have done whole album/single artists -- Black Sabbath, Rolling Stones, and a third one, I forget who, and one "various artists" comp called Music to Download Porn By. Silly fun.

PS Electrafixion was great, completely underrated band. I've been on an early Echo & the Bunnymen fix, myself.

No, I don't look good in orange.

I believe in all religeons (because they all say basically the same things) and I believe in none (because they all insist they are the only way).
