What do you guys think of the specs on the new playstation console from sony?

I hope they can make it reliable and put some isolaters on the laser sled, the ps2 is a pretty fragile unit, laser can get knocked out of alignment very easy.

Sony is great and all, but Microsoft's new X360 will be well beyond the playstation's capabilities.

Twice the processing power
7 wireless controllers
Bluetooth
gpu more powerfull than 2 nvidia geforce 6800's in sSLI
2 hdmi outputs

Hell I'll even give you these links and let you decide which looks better graphically.
Microsoft may have better software but sony knocks the socks off for hardware this time around.

I currently have an x-box. WHY? Because it beat the pants off of the Sony Playstation 2. Regardlessof what the Sony PS2 fans said. It was a much better console.

BUT! This time around...if things stay the way they are right now...the SOny PS3 will wipe the floor with the Xbox2.

Which will I buy? I'll wait a little bit before buying one of the new consoles...but I'll buy the better machine, which is just what I did last time. Right now it looks like the better machine will easily be the Sony PS3.

Amen brother, but if I know myself (which I do) then I will most likely by both just for the hell of it. On paper ( and from a good look at the capabilities of each machine based on the specs and trailers) sony is lightyears ahead of microsoft this time around.

Sony has over-hyped hardware power in the past. Read these, they indicate the 360 may be more powerful. At the very least they are very close. Remember the 360 has 3 full CPU cores, the PS3 has 1...each cell is not a CPU, just a DSP that can only do very specific things. As the ol saying goes, do not believe the hype...

Does anyone know if PS3 will upconvert old dvds to 720p/1080i?

I've been holding off on upgrading to an upconverting DVD player (considering Sony 925 or Denon 1910, possibly the Samsung 950 when it comes out in July) until HD DVD & BluRay players comes out. When I saw that PS3 will play BluRay, I was thinking that they "must" have thought to include upconversion for standard DVDs. I know some of you guys don't think upconversion is a big deal, but its about getting full value, right?

I doubt it, and if so the performance would most likely not compare to a good dvd player with upconversion. You might want to wait for the new HD DVD and BlueRay stuff to come out since it will be in true HD.

Okay, maybe we'll be pleasantly surprised. But I bet it'll be expensive. Can't believe the thing will play at 1080p!! Now that's cutting edge!!

I'd rather have a good progressive machine than a soso machine that upconverts. Personally...I've never been too impressed with the whole up-converting principal. It's one of those...yo don't get something for nothing.
