The NPD Group just put out a new report indicating that despite the recession, the monthly spending on entertainment remains unchanged at $160 per capita. The biggest spending categories remain cable/satellite TV and internet subscriptions. However, the recession has otherwise shifted the spending around.

Overall, the biggest beneficiaries of changes in consumer behavior have been movie theaters and Netflix. Movie ticket sales are on a record breaking pace this year, and this follows historical trends where movie attendance goes up during recessions, even as other forms of entertainment decline. The biggest losers cited by the NPD report are newspapers, magazines, and pay-per-view.

DVD and BD sales and rentals are down slightly, but the NPD report also indicates that about 2/3 of respondents said that their spending on DVDs will either remain the same or increase. The report also indicates that more than 50% of consumers have bought a DVD or BD within the last 90 days.

The Home Media article doesn't mention other categories such as vacation entertainment, amusement attractions, recreational spending, concerts, or sporting events. But, other articles I've read indicate that those spending categories have been hit hard.
