DVD dying a "slow" death

According to the Wall Street jounal, the big shots have wanted DVD to die for
quite some time, as it would be cheaper to sell movies over the net.
But nobody wants to watch movies on their computer.
Thats where all of the net capabilities in Blu players are coming from.
Studios used to be scared of DOWNLDS, but are more comfortable with it these days, something to do with 80% more profit, by one estimate.
So they are cheerleading the death of DVD.
iN THEIR concept BLU will be for collectors, most rental (or perhaps all) will be downloads, cable, etc.
In other words DVD is DEAD.

I am the collector, and so are most of my friends as well. So yes, I would think they would have all their bases covered. Now look for a huge change in free TV broadcasting. Ten years from now, it probably won't exist except in the form of public broadcasting. I personally believe most networks will embrace the cable television business model, as the current broadcast business model is slowly but surely breaking down.

The studios have definately wanted DVD to disappear, but they also do not want to abandon the very format that supports movie production either. DVD is a compromised format which operates as a gate for piracy. It has been around too long (about 4 years too long), and it makes more sense to rent a digital file, than to mail or manage a disc unless you want true HD which DVD isn't.

I do see the "download" becoming more of the norm. Once the technology improves and becomes just as easy as pushing a button (like ITunes), then the masses will start picking this option over hardcopy. The DVD is dying that slow death, I myself am a fan of Blu-Ray and do not want to see it's end, since it is hands down the best format on the market. But in my opinion, when download quality become as good or better then Blu, that will be when we can kiss the disc good buy.

Don't bury DVD's just yet. Some luddites, like moi, LIKE having and owning their entertainment. A download ain't owning!!! I like the convenience of watching the film when and on whatever LCD I want. I'm paying for enough temporary content with cable. I ain't gonna pay a monthly download fee as well.

At least not yet.
