I did find in my Panasonic plazma sub-menu there is a setting to bring up the dialog, not sure what it is called, but it does help alot. Might want to search your tv audio set up, might find something similar.

I stated way early in this thread that for me, almost every DVD I played had the problem you just stated. I was using an old Denon DVD player at the time. I switched to an OPPO 93 and the problem is gone when playing any DVD as well as the ones that previously caused me problems with the background being louder than the dialog.
