No, the problem with built-in amps are not that they're quiet, it's that they're not as good as external, stand-alone amps. You haven't even begun to milk everything out of that headphone that it is able to (re)produce.

    Another to consider

I haven't seen the AKG mentioned. I would heartily recommend the AKG K701;s, They may be a little pricier than you have indicated your budget to be, but they give a pure sound and are very comfortable. I would suggest trying them before deciding. JNorth1178

I may be dating myself, but I had a pair of Koss that I brought from radio shack back in 80-81. They were great, no fatigue issues and the sound was great, I paid $50 for them and when they died (I think they got damaged during move from Oregon) in 93. I could not find another pair like them. I can never find a pair of the ear buds that fit right or comfortable. and the newer brands (over or on ear type) just don't seem to be detailed enough in their sound.

One of the Koss Pro 4AAAAAAAAA's is still well-regarded. I always forget which one, though, because of their dam nomenclature.

I went over to the Koss site and took a look and the Pro 4AAAT, it was close to the design I had. The newer MV1 was dead on, but for that much cash No way!!!!!!. maybe with inflation rates over the years those $50.00 ones may be equal to the $179 today...........................

My ATH-AD1000 is saving my ass right now, cuz my new apartment is not going to be easy to control sound. I like my regular system, but I'm starting to think I wanna get a valve-amp for them. I think AudioCube has'em for less than $350.

    Well worth it.

Its a toss-up between Grado for quality and Koss PortaPross for price.
