what is +/- in a RCA cable?

i want to use general RCA cables as a preamp cable to my car amp....from what i read the inside prong is negative (small wire inside)....while the outer copper threads are positive....is this correct? Or am i completely wrong.

in rca cables the wire that connects to the shaft part of the plug is the signal carrying wire or positive, the part that connects to the outer part of the plug which goes over the female jack is the negative. In the cable itself it would be hard to say since alot of cables are different but from what you describe it sounds like a braided shelid on the outside, this would normally be negative and the smaller wire inside would be the positive.
