Poor Ben, I was just saying to a co-worker that more scenes than not, Ben's ass is being kicked or just was. He can really take a beating. They kicked his ass minutes after he arrived and have been doing so ever since. Great resilience for a little guy huh?

Michael Emerson should do Timex commercials as Ben. He can take a lickin' and keep on tickin'.

BTW Hyfi, nice to see you hanging around here more again.

I lurk a bunch. It's been a reasonable week at work so I am finding a little time to post.

another interesting article, as everyone begins to chime in on the Lost phenomenon and the state of network television after it:

    http://www.cnn.com/2010/SHOWBIZ/TV/0...ex.html?hpt=C2

Also in the middle of that link is the top 15 most watched Series Finales.... any wagers on where the Lost Series Finale will place in that ranking?

(edit: with the next post reply we'll tie the Season 5 thread and have already passed the Season 4 thread. Season 2 and 3 threads are still the all time record holders for the FF board! Woo hoo!!)

I agree. I think that last week's episode started with Jack opening his eye again. Did you notice?

There were things I liked and things that I didn't. It certainly wasn't what I was expecting. But since I'm a sobbing, crying mess I think that overall I must have liked it.

Seriously, each 'reunion' really hit home and I got something in my eye each time, oddly enough. The sun-jin discovery was a good pow to the emotional guts.

    Hunh???!!!

Is nobody else PeeOohhed about this series finale but me????

    Hokay lemme get this straight....

    1. Unanswered People:
    Walt,
    Ecko,
    Diamond twins.
    Hatch Guy.
    One eye etc...
All the other Oceanic Passengers and the Losties.
Russeu, her daughter and the kids.
Jacob and Smokey's mom. Who the hell was she?

    2. Unanswered Plot Lines:
    Dharma initiative
    Losties
    Red shirt Planies
    Walt
    Hugo's reign
    Whidmore
    Penny
    Jin and Sun's kid.
The Wheel and who the hell built it.
    The Hatch,
The Light engine on the Island
The Balance of the world now that Smokey's gone, all light no dark?
The Temple the Sttatue and who the hell built it and why?

This and a thousand other red herrings thrown out and unanswered. Rather than make a overarching narrative that answers as least SOME of these questions we're instead treated to 2 hours of alternate universe wrap-up where everybody (well almost) gets who or what they want. With a teary eyed death to make everyone weep and wail! WTF!!!!???? What are Hugo and Desmond now, time traveling matchmakers? Everybody hug and sing Kummbaya as we drift into the light... Puhlease!!!!

I'm not saying I wasn't crying as Jack did his best James Cagney impression for longest death scene, but you had to bring in the dog too? You had to ring in "My Dog Skip" on the heartstrings too???? Have you no effin' shame???? Effective, but lazy. Was this all a dream, was it limbo, the fantasies of a dying man? Bobby Ewing in the shower??? WTF???? I"M PISSED!!!!!

    Worf

Great ending. I'm not pissed off - I said last week I prefer the ambiguity rather than cleanly trying wrap up all the loose ends - the more you try wrap them up, the more follow up questions would emerge anyway.

Gonna have to watch it again to digest it all but overall I'm happy with how it went. Gonna miss this show...

So...when do we collectively start with Season 1 again?

well... it is the only season we haven't fully discussed on the board here! We started with Season 2!

I like the ambiguity on alot of the questions as well. i'm glad they answered most of the massive questions ala, what are the numbers, the island, the voices, the alternate timeline, who's jacob/smokey.

leaving the others open ended will always leave them up for debate as to what the viewer's interpretation of what happened is.

So i'll start with my answers, Worf!
1 - Walt - he's living in Chicago as a genius kid predicting the stock market and already a millionaire a few times over.
2 - ecko - he's another voice trapped on the island.
    3 - diamond twins - who?
4 - hatch guy - you mean kevin? we learned about him, he was in iraq with sayid, and then got recruited with dharma to come work at the hatch. went bonkers and blew his brains out. (right?)
    5 - one-eye - i forget.
6 - oceanic passengers and other losties - i say screw 'em. we didn't need to learn anymore about anyone not a Number. although was nice to wrap up rose and bernard.
7 - jacob's mom - i think that was the best one to leave unanswered because that's just gonna end up being a 'then who's her mom' and 'and then who's HER mom' and then 'and then whos the mom of HER' endless thing. so this way they just say, that's the mother of the island and leave it at that. no reason to go further back and explain her back story, because then there'd be another back story to go further back again.

Just like jacob never wanted it, was never given the choice. even if he wants to give the Losties a choice to taking his place, i think jack's "choice" isn't going to last, and Hurley will be the man. That's my plan at least! And they have a few days to read this post, go back and reshoot the ending episode and put it all together by sunday in case it really is jack and they changed their minds. And then Jack is going to sacrifice himself so that Hurley takes over with Ben as his second in command, and then we find out that the alternate timeline was really where all the losties are already dead and are trying to find their peace with their past life, and then they all gather together and move on to the next phase of their existence, other than Ben, who stays outside because he still has some things to work on before he can let go. And then it ends with the last shot of Jack and his eye just like in the pilot episode, and Vincent the dog is there too. And as the credits roll, we'll see shots of the beach with the wreckage on it from the first season.
not that i want to say i told you so but... damn i nailed this one!!

I thought it was good. Wife didn't like it at all. She wanted more answers.

I think in the end, this entire season was about Jack, and his death. The 'sideways' place as his dad said, is where they (the populace of the island) had agreed to meet when one of their group is passing.

Some had passed before, and others will be long after.

At least we learned that the Island itself was 'real' and that they had actually been there. I would have been pissed if the island was a dream.

Kinda fitting that we find Jack in the same way that we found him in the first episode.

It's too bad it's over. I would have liked some answers, but in the end I think it ended better than it could have. At least they were not all in jail.

I'm okay with all the past questions that weren't answered. I'm willing to accept it as all just part of the journey that made this such a fun ride. We don't get all the answers we want in life and I'm okay with not getting all the answers here. I think that's what will make this such a great series for years to come....people will continue to discuss their theories and ideas. See you at the first Lost Convention...I'll be the one looking for the cutest guy in a Sawyer costume.

    Alright...here come the questions...

At the beginning of the season when the island was at the bottom of the ocean, was that from the nuclear blast or from all the stuff last night with Desmond, Jack and the big plug in the island?

What was the second Oceanic 815 flight that started the FSs? Were they all already dead?

Did they really get off the island the first time and go back?

Are we to assume then that the group that left the island in the plane at the end didn't make it home and they died en route?

How did Hurley and Ben get off the island? Is Ben alive? Is that why he wasn't ready to go into the church? Did Desmond finally kick the bucket? And what about Penny, she was still back in the "real world" with their son, wasn't she? So what was she doing in the church?

Did Jack really have a son? Locke yelled at him that he didn't. So who was David? Was he just a figment of Jack's dead imagination?

    Alright...here come Kam's answers:

At the beginning of the season when the island was at the bottom of the ocean, was that from the nuclear blast or from all the stuff last night with Desmond, Jack and the big plug in the island?
-The Sideways timeline was the Purgatory (for lack of a better term) World where the Losties were finding out how to let go of their life and recconect with their friends etc. So the beginning of S6 was already in the Purgatory World. The nuclear explosion really didn't 'reset' the island or un-do anything. Other than wipe out Juliette.

What was the second Oceanic 815 flight that started the FSs? Were they all already dead?
-Lost me here, when was their a second 815?

Did they really get off the island the first time and go back?
-Yes. The Flash Forwards were the reality, along with Locke's death and all that storyline that linked back up together. The Oceanic6 did get off, and did get back on the island with Lapidus.

Are we to assume then that the group that left the island in the plane at the end didn't make it home and they died en route?
-No, I got from Christian's words to Jack that they all died "eventually" but not neccessarily when he did as time is different in Purgatory World, there is no "now" where they are. So while this is present time for Jack's death, everyone is there no matter when they died or are going to die in the future, as everyone dies eventually. So perhaps the AjiraAir5 got off the island, lived long lives, died, and then joined Jack in the Purgatory World.

How did Hurley and Ben get off the island? Is Ben alive? Is that why he wasn't ready to go into the church? Did Desmond finally kick the bucket? And what about Penny, she was still back in the "real world" with their son, wasn't she? So what was she doing in the church?
-Same as above. Penny dies eventually, as does Desmond, and then join the rest of the Losties in Purgatory World at the same time.

Did Jack really have a son? Locke yelled at him that he didn't. So who was David? Was he just a figment of Jack's dead imagination?
-I thought this was tricky, as in the Purgatory World, he had made a life with Juliette and their son, but i think when he touched the coffin, all of "reality" came crashing back home to him. and then he knew he was ready to 'move on' and let go of the Purgatory World construct he made up in his head to deal with it all.

Loved this episode. I read an interesting article regarding how you kind of watch Lost two ways: 1) Analytically where you pour over blogs, screen shots, and threads at AR trying to solve the puzzles. 2) Emotionally where you strap in and go along for the ride. The Finale was definitely more skewed toward the emotional side with all of the reunions (I especially liked Sawyer and Juliette's) which to me was more like the pilot episode before the polar bears and smoke monsters started raising questions.

    Some random thoughts:
    * "Christian Shepherd? Really?" I never put 1+1 together on that name until Kate said that. While I don't think the show favored one religion over another, the basics of Christianity where you take care of others was certainly prevalent. What a fitting end with Christian opening the doors and walking hands out into the light.

    * If Walt's dog made the finale, shouldn't Walt???

    * Sayid and Shannon... Really?!? Agree with FA, it should have been Sayid and Nadia.

    * Never realized how striking Charlotte was until this episode. It would have been nice to see Faraday and her at the end considering he's loved her for so long. Admittedly, Eloise's plea to not take him was touching.

Lost is the only show I really made sure to watch/Tivo. It feels a bit like a hangover as I process all of the info, kind of like when you come the last page of a great book and are bummed it's over. The brilliant characters will be missed.

I don't recall saying that. But I agree with it.

When Desmond said that he wouldn't take Daniel, I thought that the way he said it meant that Des wouldn't but Charlotte would. So I kept waiting for the big Daniel/Charlotte memory scene. But in hindsight, maybe Des is like an Angel of Death, so Eloise meant that she didn't want Faraday to die.

I meant the season opener this year. When they are on the plane again and they land in LA this time.

Don't you find it strange that in Jack's purgatory world he would be separated from Juliet instead of living happily ever after with her?

I've been giving this seasons Flash Sideways more thought.

If you think of the secondary characters that were important in the Sideways stories, they were all dead too. Locke's girlfriend, Locke's Dad, Alex, Danielle, Nadia, Sayid's brother certainly could have been dead, Keemy, Libby, Ana-Lucia. And we never saw people who were alive like Hurley's parents.

    Face it...we were Sixth Sensed!

If you haven't seen it already, Aloha to LOST with Jimmy Kimmel was hilarious! I couldn't stay up to watch it (damn I'm old!) so I Tivo'd it. Great show with some interesting insights and big laughs.

Don't you find it strange that in Jack's purgatory world he would be separated from Juliet instead of living happily ever after with her?
as i understood (i think) how the Purgatory World worked was this was the life they created out of their flawed selves, but at least a better version of that life. The one thing that was missing, was their 'true' realization of self, and how that self was connected to the Island.

For Sawyer, now he saw himself as a cop, the exact antithesis of what he really was, and yet still haunted by the past of his parents death.

For Kate, she was still a fugitive, but believed herself innocent. So still wracked with the guilt of what she had done.

For Hurley, now all his luck was fantastic, and he was using it to help people.

For Ben, he was a teacher now, helping children learn, yet still alone, without a family, searching for a daughter-figure to help again.

For Desmond, now his arch-nemesis had become his friend and employer, a camaraderie of arms between them to share the very drink that was flaunted at him in his real life. But, missing his love for Penny.

And for Jack, he built a life with Juliet, creating a child he could be a father figure for in place of his own father, but still needed closure with his father, landing in LA-X and yet... the casket is still missing. That missing piece from his life that he always had.

And for all of them, it was their loves that brought them back to their reality and the realization that that was all they needed to move on.

At least, that's my story for now!
