good preamps under 1000 bucks (possibly tubed)

So i'm looking to substitute my CA 540A integrated (used as a preamp with and Adcom GFA5500 power amp) with a decent pre-amp, and i was thinking i want to try tubed.
SHOULD have a remote but its not absolutely necessary, and i'm willing to go used.
any tips, ideas? also a nice phono stage would be good.
I remember the days when I thought 128kbps sounded great and had never spent more than 10 bucks on cables...

    consider AVA

Van Alstine Trancendence 5 seems like a solid tube/ss hybrid design at around 800.00. I'm considering the same type if switch.

I have been very happy with my ARC SP9. Highly recommended! It is not the first ARC pre I have owned. I have always been more than happy with them. You can find them used for 1K or so.

Hi Fi World magazine really rates the Ming Da tube preamp and it seems a real bargain.
