I have a pair of Altec Lansing 887A CAPRI speakers that were made in 1974. I bought them for 5 bucks at a swapmeet, and they work perfect! The surrounds aren't rotted or anything. This is my only piece of vintage gear, but if I see anymore deals like this Ill pick up more. Here's a link to an ad featuring my speakers - http://www.lansingheritage.org/image...home/page3.jpg They are the smallest ones shown, and are listed as "d" on the list.

I don't know if a 17-year old turntable qualifies as vintage. My Denon DP-59L still looks and performs as good as when I first bought it in 1988.

i don't know if these speakers are qualified as vitage, so i'd thought i'd ask all you guys. And i know that most of you guys are not fond to Sony products, but for the money i paid for them i can't complain. Besides this is just my temporary budget setup.

Can anyone tell me any thing about these speakers. I googled them but i really didn't find any info or reviews. If anyone knows info on these model speakers please let me know:

    Surrounds - SS-SR100
    Floor standing speakers - SS-U542AV
    Center - SS - CN100

Heres a pic of my temp setup, nothing compared to u guys but its good for my apt (please excuse the content on TV, i was watching MS.Teen ;) :

    Me!
Actually, until Nov last year, it all was 1980 vintage. I still have and use a Harksound turntable, Harman Kardon cassette deck, and a Hi-Fi JVC VCR which (touch wood) are still functioning fine. Unlike a heap of laser driven products (CD & DVD) which have already died on me! Why is it that middle of the range stuff which is 25 years old has given lots of service and still going strong, but newer technology has already been replaced several times?

Until recently I also occassionaly used a 1963 HMV valve radiogram to play 78s. Anybody remember 78s? I inherited some, but they were too cumbersome and noisy to use so I donated them to a record museum.

    :D Hi

I have grandmas HMV 8+8 twin channel record player, and I have 2 pairs of technics speakers
The older pair i think is the closed enclosure, as the label says National Technics and the speakers are made in japan. They consist of a dome tweeter and horn midrange and 10inch woofer. I replaced the tweeters and woofers. The speaker cabinet is almost box like 44cm wide, 42cm deep and 69cm high.

The taller technics around 3ft (92cm) are 3 way with a 12inch woofer.

    See pics below.

Celestion Ditton 66 Studio Monitor Speakers
My equipment is all pretty old due to never seeming to have the money to upgrade, I've had my Technics RS-TR265 tape player from new in 1988. My CD player was purchased second-hand about six years ago, a Technics SLP 310 (badly needs replacing, poor quality) and my only amp I've had for well over a decade since new is a very modest and not very good Technics SU-V500 and my deck is very ancient a Dual 505-2, excellent but in need of a new stylus. However, I bought a pair of vintage Celestion Ditton 66 Studio Monitors from the 1970s on Ebay last December and whatever I play on this system sounds brilliant!! (I am currently posting in speakers re a fault on these but they still sound beautiful despite the fault). These speakers have pulled this whole system together in a way you would not think possible, even worn out old tapes sound brilliant. I highly recommend these speakers - they usually retail about £600-£700, I managed to get mine for £200 as they look a bit tatty but I've been told that to get similar quality speakers on today's market I would have to expect to pay £5000! I understand the smaller Celestion Ditton 44s are quite good too for their size. :)

Heck the only modern unit I have is a cd/dvd player, a Philips 951-something or the other.

I have to admit, I'd sure like a remote on the pre, and a good quality cd player, maybe tubed like Justlisten2s'. Other than that, I like my sound.

    Anyone?

    Pete

My Conrad Johnson Sonographe amp is probably the oldest of everything, and it works very well. The amp will probably be next on the list to get replaced unless I get a tube Preamp first.
Just the other day on Audiogn I missed a matching solid state Sonographe Preamp for a couple hundred bucks.....they would have looked very nice together.

In 1937 Altec acquired the domestic theatre sound service and maintenance business of Electrical Research Products, Inc., the Western Electric subsidiary. Altec Lansing was formed in 1941 when Lansing Manufacturing Co., a nearly bankrupt west coast loudspeaker company, was purchased for $50,000 cash. Altec Lansing went to work for the Navy on magnetic airborne detection equipment. Much of the work in this period was done in association with GSI, the company from which Texas Instruments was to spring. At war's end, Altec Lansing continued its steady growth pattern and led the way to large scale development of public address systems and to a conscientiousness of acoustics that had never existed before.

    Vintage Mishmash
Recently modified my system. Was running 4 BOSE 501 series II's (from 1973, back when BOSE stuff was decent) and a pair of Bang & Olufsen Pentas (1988). Used a Yamaha control amp for the self powered Pentas. Had a Sansui 7000 4-channel receiver (circa 1977) for the 4 BOSE's. Ran the Pentas for front channel L/R, had 2 Bose's for front L/R, but placed them on the sides. Had 2 BOSE's for back surround L/R. The sound was impressively good, but the 1970's sound around technology is nothing like today's stuff.

Went out and bought an AR HC6 home theater speaker system (4 sats, center, and powered sub $329)) and a Yamaha rxv 2500 a/v receiver ($750). After lengthly experimentation, I ended up with:
Penta's for front L/R, running of their own amps, with volume control by the Yamaha.
2 BOSE's as front L/R placed outside and slighty behind the Penta's. Had to put 4 ohm resistors in line since the BOSE's are 4 ohm. Feared the worst, but didn't notice any audible sound deterioration.
the AR sats as side surround and rear surrounds, plus the center and subwoofer.

    Basically it's a 7.1 sound system using 9 amps/ 9 speakers/ and a powered sub.

End Result: No comparison for movies/video with the old setup. Very impressive improvement.

For music I don't think I lost anything in the transition. I thought the Yamaha 2500 was quite flexible in allowing me to blend 4 large front speakers with 5 cube speakers. Still a big mishmash, but what the heck.

can someone tell me if i need to open this thing up and change internal fuses for the illuminated lights to work again?

    bernd, thanks for the welcome.

I have 4 cartridges, with one being vintage.

    Shure III w/ VN35E
    Goldring 1042
    Denon 110
    At 440ML

The SHure is my least fav of the bunch. I had a NOS stylus and I think it might have dried up a bit.

I have only had my 40's for about 4 months or so, but I like them very much. They were the personal amps of a very good tech here in town, and he has already told me he regrets selling them. I told him anytime he misses them he is welcome to come over and listen to them sing. What more can a guy do?

I oscillate between a Sansui TU-9000, Pioneer TX-9500 II, and a McIntosh MR7300 for tuners in my 2 ch. setup. The Mac sound beats 'em all though. For DXing, the Sansui is best. Also use an "old" Yamaha R-900 when I'm feeling a little quirky....:6:

I have some Hi Fi vintage stuff including a mono only Heathkit preamp and power amp from early sixties. the preamp was desighned to hold a second preamp circuit board in the box for Stereo but this has just the one These are both working fine but are currently not used.
Also I have a Pioneer "steriophonic" Hi-Fi reciever SM-B201 with 19 tubes including 2 6BM8 pairs for finals. it sounds great. the plates (anodes) in the finals have a tendancy to glow red after about 20 minutes. I doubt this is a good thing. so I don't power it up often.

Just dumped my last Vintage piece Nad 7020 from active service. The amp power supply died (Blew fuses constantly) some time ago and was using it only as a tuner and Phono preamp until a few days ago when I replaced it and my old prologic stuff with a Yamaha HTR 5960
Bought the 7020 New as a teenager in the late 70's it was a great piece of gear.
