For sure they are dried out, and are well past their service lifetime. The selenium rectifier is also problematic, but if the unit hasn't been abused it might still be serviceable. The output tubes might or might not be OK. You'll have to test them and then re-bias the amp. Unless you can do it yourself (it's not hard but you should see it done once before you try) I would have a competent tech go over your amp before you crank it up.

    Good luck!

    Thanks G!

As I research this a bit more the advice you give seems to be similar to what I have read.
Looks like I will wait until I can take it up the road to the audio people who have done some work for me before. they charge a minimal check out fee so it won't hurt to let them look at it first.

Thekid, that receiver is very well regarded, the Fisher tube receivers are very nice. I hope you get that puppy going

Today I got my first Luxman receiver. It is with a digital tuner so I will assume it is one of the last gear luxman made. It sounds alright to me.

It is 40wpc, it has power! My HK 330C stopped working and I am going to replace the transistors ( I just ordered them online ) so the Luxman will replace the harman for a while!

    Mr Peabody
I've got an older Luxman, I think R-110, it is a very clean sounding receiver with a lot of detail but lacks bass authority.

It that an R-404, Dataka? If so, I'd guess you're right about it being one of the last. According to the Luxman Vintage Audio site, the 404 was made in 1985, (see here). Alpine bought Lux in 1984 so this might have been one of last pre-Alpine designed models.

Alpine used the brand for quite a while after that, sold off Luxman in the early '00s. And of course, Luxman is back in the game today with some pretty nice stuff, (see here). I'm likin' this L-550AII Class A integrated amp.

I owned this C-120A preamp, (bought used), for a while but wasn't sufficiently impressed to keep it ...

Yea that is the same model. I know Luxman was making nice stuff but they are not that popular and they are very hard to find. I don't see them on craigslist at all.

Mr. Peabody, you are right, it really doesn't have bass but the mids and highs are pretty decent.

Nice! I remember the name, in the late seventies. They offered twice the power at almost half the price of their competition. Were they an independent company? Back then rumors were flying around they were associated with a larger company that produced high quality amps.

This is just speculation but the back of the receiver is absolutely identical to the Rotel 403, right down to the speaker output fuse cover. Nothing inside said Rotel on it that I saw. I'm thinking it may have been built on the same line as Rotel but with a generic power transformer, caps, etc. It does sound very nice for $10.00 :)

    Boston Accoustics T930 II
I was browsing the local Craiglist and found these last posted over a month ago. They were listed Very reasonable. The add stated if he didn't sell them within a week, he would donate them. Just for laughs I sent him an email. He still had them! He thought the woofers were shot, but they just need to be refoamed. I became a fan of BA about 2 years ago, when I bought a used pair of A 60 II's & HD9's at a garage sale. I remember the A60's, at the time they were out I wasn't impressed. (I had Cerwin Vega's at the time)But with age my taste has changed. I still enjoy rock, but it's not all I listen too now as I did back then. I haven't had a chance to really listen to them yet, only to check out to make sure all the drivers were working, they need to be refoamed first. They have had decent reviews for the most part. I was going to recap them too. I was going to buy poly caps for the higher frequencies, and electrolytic for the lower frequencies (which is a 120uf, 70uf caps which would break the bank if I did all poly caps). I have bought electrolytic caps from Parts Express in the past, they seem to sound okay, but they are just wimpy looking compared to other original caps in quality speakers (new or old), yet rated the same value and same voltage as the original caps. Maybe I'm wrong, but because of the smaller physical size, I question the longevity of the PE caps.Does anyone know of a source where I can buy beefier electrolytic caps without breaking the bank? Also I've read putting a small or insignificant value in parallel with an electrolytic cap can improve the sound. Anyone ever try this?

I have hear A150's and thought they sound pretty good so I will be curious to hear what you think of these once they are re-capped and refoamed.

I also posted a pic on an older thread over in General Audio but here was my pick-up over the weekend.....

Not vintage but I just wanted to share. I received this Energy powered sub. My first touch with Energy sub. It pounds hard and the bass is smooth.

Very nice! I have 2 Energy subs (esw 8's, similar, but down-firing)) nice sub for the money. As you say, smooth. Also very musical and natural (good tone definition, not so much of the artificial boominess). Works well with a 2 channel setup.

Since we are talking about JBL speakers, I got a pair of big monsters. I didn't even know JBL made speakers like that! 15" woofers inside each cabinet. They are not of the best JBL speakers but they are very loud and the bass response it not bad.

Well I hope you are able to get pics posted of your "invisible" 650. I am a fan of the Pioneer SX series. I think you will enjoy the 650.

I will be bringing the Fisher home tomorrow!!
Will need to see the complete rundown that was done but I know the tube sockets were replaced, bias set and the tape switch replaced. Tech indicated it appears to be in very good shape inside.

Unfortunately I leave on a business trip on Sunday and will not get to spend much time with it. Looking forward to hooking it up to the Heresy II's! :6:

    Tangent by Klipsch
Found these little gems on CL. Tangent were an attempt by Klipsch to mass market some of their speakers. Many of the Tangent are slightly modified versions of higher end Klipsch models. My rationale for getting these (besides the price) was that the K-77 tweeter in them is the same as the tweeter used in my Heresy II's. If I ever need to replace one in my Heresy's I am set.

Currently I use a pair of Heresy I's as the front speakers in my main HT so I have decided to use these as the rear surrounds because I think they are sonically closer to the Heresy's than the Klipsch KM2's I had in place.

This model is the T10 with walnut sides. The grills have a few issues but being all black they are not significant and not visible unless you get real close. Soundwise they are very good and I think will make excellent surrounds. High WAF rating with the walnut cabinet.

I picked up a Luxman K-112 cassette deck, yesterday. I haven't figured out where to put it. I don't want it on top of my DAC and phono preamp, so I think I'll make another shelf for this IKEA unit.
