Well I put a lot of big pictures and very good description. There are people that when they see those big white woofers and they go for them! I posted them last night and at 1pm they were gone!

Another addition and this time very impressed. I have never heard an amp with such a good mids and highs, especially at the mids. I have never heard my speakers sound like that. I have to keep the mids and highs knobs on 9 o'clock so it sounds normal. The front door that opens and closes is a very cool thing.

I looked it up, says it was made in the 80's, but yours looks newer than that. Never had a Yamaha, but people who have owned seemed to like them. Congratulations!

He asked if if I wanted them, and having a speaker addiction I said "I sure would!". After getting them home I pulled off the grills. I was disappointed to see the front of the speakers were plastic. But after removing the woofer, to look inside, I found new hope. Each driver has a 2nd order crossover, and the tweeter and midrange has it's own compartment. I've listen to these speakers an hour at a time for a total of 4 hours or so. I've found they are definitely not a rock speaker, that is, they don't like to be played loud. But at lower levels, those where you can have a conversation with the person next to you and not have to strain, they perform quite well. Maybe not a great speaker, but a good one.The bass isn't the lowest, but it is there and it is well controlled tight and honest. The highs are a bit bright, you may find yourself reaching for the treble control, especially the louder you play them. I do like the mid's, especially with acoustics. These speakers do provide a lot of detail, a fun speaker to listen too, it does color things somewhat, but to me in a pleasant way. I don't think they are worth the $325 MSRP back in the early 80's but for $50 or so, I'd say it's worth it. I'm not all that familiar with B&O, always thought they were more eye candy than ear candy. But I think a lot of that is that is because the times I've audition their speakers before, they were played loudly, either by the salesman or me. They really aren't designed for loud levels. But at lower levels, they are a nice speaker. I'm enjoying these, a nice variation.:2:

I really liked those back in the day. As I remember they imaged very well. During that time in my life they were too expensive and there were many quality speakers available for $200 a pair. I was still enjoying my Smaller Advents.

Glad you are enjoying it, Put instead of swapping it out between systems, why not do some online searching for another one, sure you can find an use one for about $100 to half off. I have 3 SB3, one in each of the rooms that I use, never paid full price.

Yes they do image well, I'm still enjoying them, I have to say I'm impressed with the amount of detail they provide. .I couldn't afford them back then (early 80's) either. Besides you're right there were a lot of speakers around that $200 mark, that were very good.
I had a chance to buy a pair of Advents with the fried egg tweeter this summer for $30 at a Salvation Army store, but I passed at the time because there was a long check out line and I was in kind of a hurry. I kick myself now.

I think someone owes some royalties to Mr. Kloss as those look very much like original Large Advents. If they sound similar even better.

    Passing The Torch
I had a great day with my oldest boy yesterday. We wandered into a local thrift to kill some time, and stumbled onto a portable record player, in excellent condition. It's quite literally a no-namer, but completely clean and fully functional. Self contained with it's own speaker, no inputs or outputs.

    http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5003/...5d94d21c_z.jpg

I have begun to build a "system" for him. Of course, it consists of an old SS receiver and a pair of Technics bookshelf speakers. For a four year old, he takes exellent care of it as he desperately wants me to add more sources to it. I have promised him a CDP and frankly, he has earned it. This kid takes better care of his system than I do, and you should see him handle a CD...it's quite impressive.

Of course, a record player never figured into the equation. I can't be bothered to have to replace a cheesy stylus every other week. But then we ran into this portable, and that changed everything. It's stylus is the type that will not break, yet won't damage an LP. they use a similar table at my local record shop for previewing.

    http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5209/...eca252b2_z.jpg

My old man gave me his old Califone when I was about 8 or 9. I will never forget how happy it made me, and the freedom it represented as I could then play my own LPs on my own terms. Oh ya, Culture Club and Micheal Jackson never sounded so sweet.

Anyhow, it's a clever design. It has a 45 adaptor built into the platter, you just pop it up when you want to use it. In order to accomodate an LP, the arm swings up and out of the way. It does 33 and 45.

    http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5127/...6619d209_z.jpg

We also scored some LPs including a minty copy of Split Enz' True Colours. The rest of the day was spent listening to LPs, and keeping my youngest away from it. All in all a great day spent bonding with my kid, within the context of my favorite hobby!! Life is good!! Oh and the portable table? 5 bucks!!

I remember having a small mono record player at that age range (1958/62) and playing 45's in my bedroom. Fine memories! Johnny Horton North to Alaska, the original Hot Rod Lincoln was one of my favorites. The Monster Mash, Bobby Vee's Rubber Ball.

Thanks for sharing you are passing the torch along to your youngster. Sets a nice tone for the day today......

    Great story Pops!

It looks like you are paving some roads you can both travel for years to come.
You might want to get that CDP quick before you walk in one day and see him "cuing up" a CD on his new turntable........ :biggrin5:

As I have mentioned several times in other posts the best part of my thrift store hunting for audio gear is that I do it most often with my son. At a time when most teenagers don't want to spend 5 minutes in a room with their parents I have spent most Saturday's with my son riding around listening to and talking about music while finding some pretty good deals on gear.

Good story. Nothing as you say as having your own. I had 3 brothers and a sister,so the competition was fierce for the main stereo (A blond Magnavox tube console in the 60's). Having my "own" enabled me to enjoy my own music, which led to enjoy audio. The gift you gave is more than a record player. You're a good Pop.

Thanks for the love guys! Here's my newest find. WBT 2016 cabling finished with WBT 0101 locking RCA plugs. WBT are a German company known for high end ICs. The fit and finish of the plugs is unlike anything I have ever owned. Basically, the plug twists to loosen and once on the input, twists to snug. It literally will not come off once snugged up. Awesome!!

My local shop "gifted" these to me for the mere price tag of $50. They are easily worth $150 - 200, but I won't be selling them. They are beyond any descriptives. The high end has improved dramatically which for my rig, is a great thing.

Sweet! Those cables use the same connectors that are on my HGA cables. Just be careful how much you tighten them. I had a mother of a time getting them off the last time I moved stuff around. From the color they look Rhodium plated. That's the bomb!

Rhodium huh? Sounds like audiophile kool-aid lol. Geoff they are amazing. I mean my king Cobras are great, and were a big improvement, but not like this. This is the first real evidence that I have had about high end cables.

I wsn't even that excited before putting them in, I bought them because obviously the price was right. Imagine my surprise after hooking them up. That's how I know they are good, because i didn't WANT them to be, they simply are.

They have made the music WAY more exciting. God I can't believe where I am at now with my rig. I want for nothing now except more LPs!!

Honestly kid, that sounds so great. It's all i am hoping for, that him and I can connect at some level around music. We have him enrolled in music lessons which at this point, is a group format where they can sample between guitar, piano, drums, etc. This is what I really want for him, then him and the old man can jam together, Partridge family style!

You are a lucky guy, but i don't need to tell you that. I still have alot more work to do, like for example getting him to use a Kleenex instead of his sleeve. Aren't you glad those days are behind you now?

Thanks for the heads up SB. I am a pretty big Split Enz fan, and have all of their work on LP. Frankly, I have never seen a copy of True Colours without the laser etching. My son's has it, and really the LP probably has value up to 7 or 8 bucks. But hey we paid 1.99 and I figure let him have it, he loves the disc, makes him feel grown up having something other than Sesame street Disco, which BTW rocks!

    You've been busy!
My second pair of speakers back in the 70's were a pair of Cerwin Vega's. Sometimes thinking back, things seem better then they actually were, but as I recall they weren't that bad, but then again I played mostly rock 99% of the time.

I remember the Hitachi receivers. There big marketing point early on,was having a class D amplifier. It seems to me some in the late 70's or early 80's had a gold face.

That looks like a Yamaha sub.Their entry level subs were rated decent for the lower budget level. Good finds!

I have refoamed many speakers already so it is an easy job for me. I don't think the tweeters are aluminum. They sound very good, after new year I will hear to see how they will sound compared with my Minimus-7 and maybe I will keep them.

    KLH Model 6's
Well I had a relapse today and picked another pair of speakers.
Cosmetically they are in fairly good shape given their age.
Biggest problem is that both tweeters are out so another project. Not sure what I will do with them. My guess is they are probably similar in sound to my Dynaco A-25's based on their size and drivers. But what the heck for $15 I figured one more for the stack....... :D

The guy was a Vietnam veteran and he said he bought them brand new from Germany. I have the manual books too. The amp is similar to the KA-6000 I have, the buttons and knobs are exactly the same, the look too.

The tuner is a beauty and all lights work. Overall good deal.

    Polk Monitor 7
I bought these off CL. I got them cheap, so I really can't complain. As you can see one of the drivers is not original (MTX). I didn't know it when I bought them. The guy selling them had the grills off of one and the grill on the other speaker when I went over to take a look. You can guess which speaker he left the grill on:wink5: . I guess I was a little too trusting maybe, it was 8:30 AM and I was running short on time to meet an old friend for breakfast. I know if the seller would have been upfront I would have bought them anyway, so I'm not complaining, just don't like the idea that he might be thinking he pulled a fast one on me. I was able to buy a replacement driver (MW6502) cheap off ebay, a pair of monitor 4's with a bad woofer and a bad tweeter. I just had him send me the good woofer & tweeter and pitch the rest (cabinets, they were beat), to cut down the price of shipping. I put the replacement woofer in, and I really like the sound of these. The cabinets are mint too. They are keepers! All's well that ends well!

Those are very good speakers. One of my friends has a pair of those or similar (they look the same) and they sounded so good with a Marantz 2230. They have a lot of bass to for their size.

Thanks Dak, I agree they do have a lot of bass for their size. I can't remember ever hearing bass so low without being muddy coming out of a speaker with a single 6.5" driver.
Yet on the Polk site, out of the 13 reviews only one listed the bass as a strenth, and 3 or 4 listed it as a weakness. Must be the ones who listed it as having no bass must not have the drivers sealed properly, or underpowered. (They do like power).

Yep, I have a few stacked in the back as well as in another room. I'm up somewhere between 35- 40 pairs of speakers now.

Here's a pic of what I'm listening to now, I have them all hooked up using 2 switch boxes (6 pr. ea). I know it's an audiophile no no, but I like the conveinence of just pushing a button rather than physically connecting and disconnecting each one. I do rotate another pair or 2 in and out every 3 or 4 months.
    Pictured are:
    Top row: Wharfedale Evo 10's,Paradigm Titians,Klipsch KG 2's, Boston A60's,Infinity Beta 20's, and B&O Bevox 45-2's.
Bottom row: Polk SDA II's, Polk Monitor 7b's, Wharfedale WD 60 Mark III's, Genesis I, Advent Prodigy's, Yamaha NS 4's.
    Foreground EPI 201's.
Sorry it's just you can only see 1/2 of the speakers in play, but the width of the room prevented me from standing back for a full shot.
