Velodyne MiniVee 8" vs.Velodyne SPL-1200

which one is better for music? i have a huge room and need big sound. the Velodyne SPL-1200 is 12" subwoofer, would that make it better for better bottom end? does anybody have either one of these?

The minivee is basically a small SPL series sub so go with the SPL-1200, its a no brainer for a big room. The Minivee was made for small spaces.

the minvee is 1000rms and the spl 1200 is a series one, so its 750 rms. how big is of a difference is that in the real world. i'm looking for a a sub that can hit the very low notes.

A sub woofer needs to move air. With all things considered a bigger cone with greater excursion can move more air. I would go with the SPL-1200. The smaller sub may go just as deep. The extra wattage helps there. It won't play as loud as a larger cone.

Don't get caught up in the power numbers. These are sealed subs and require more power. The smaller minivee with more power will not sound as good or play as low as the SPL-12. Besides, subs have controls to turn up the volume and to change the cross over points. Call Velodyne customer service if you dont believe us. These are excellent subs by a well respected company that only makes subs and nothing else. They have been in business for years. The SPL sold for over $1k new so whats your concern? You wont find a better sub for under $800. It will have nice tight controlled bass, excellent for music and HT.

Granted though, the SPL-1200 is compact and I'm sure sounds pretty good.

In a 'massive' room though, especially for HT, I wouldn't go with that. Nevermind a minivee...

I've been very pleased with the SPL series and the Micro-Vee's, Minivee's...

Very good sealed subs for music and If price is not a concern go for the 1200. Hopefully the room isn't too big for it.

Have you heard an SPL sub? I have and they SPL series put out plenty of deep bass (21-120 freq resp). Very tight and well controlled. They play loud and are great for music and HT. I have heard SVS subs and and many other sub $1K subs including a few REL subs. The SPL 1200 sold for about $1700. It comes with a remote control and auto calibration. And the technology is not that old. Maybe a Rhythmik sub may be in its class but I have not heard one. And for the sub $400 price that the used SPL 1200 is going for, I don't think that you could do better.

Wattage ratings for unpowered speakers are just about worthless. When a speaker blows it's usually the tweeter and it blows because the amplifier has insufficient power. When pushed to it's limits the amplifier clips (turning nice sine type waves into square waves) and the result is blown tweeters. When you have too much power the woofer's will start bottoming out making loud unmistakably dreadful noises. The solution for too much power is reduce the volume. The solution for amplifier clipping is first replace the tweeters then get an amplifier with enough power.

There is no ratio for speaker to sub woofer power. You should have enough power to drive your speakers to the levels you desire in your room. A sub woofer should have enough output level capability to play as loud as you want in your room. There is no hard and fast number for how much power a given sub woofer needs. Sealed boxes need more and vented boxes need less. For any decent sized room and system a 10" sub would be the smallest I'd consider. My preference would be for a 12" or preferably a 15". Remember, moving air is what subs are supposed to do. Bigger cones usually move more air.

No I've never heard a 1200, but I do know there is only so much you can do with a compact 12" sealed sub. Unless i'm mistaken, the high power amp is there only to compensate the relatively early roll-off of the lower frequencies (this is inherant to sealed subs).
So yes, it will probably play to the low twenties but at the expense of output. If you're listening to music, it will do just fine. But if you want reference or close to reference level movie watching in a large room, i doubt it will cut the mustard.
Then again i'm coming from the DIY crowd, and for 800 bucks you can build something pretty special (if you have the room for it, that is...).

Hey guys

I've had an SPL-1200 (Series 1) for sometime and it rocks for music and HT. Got it new for about $800 in Jan. 2003. I run the volume at about 3 cause it cranks. Its been reliable (no issues) and is still going strong. Wish I could've found an SPL-1200 with that acrylic (see-through) box, very cool.
