    Anyone ever heard these?

    ...The Omega Grande 6s?
    Attachment 2022

I'm lovin' the KEF sound, but the bass is a bit muddied in the current configuration. My computer room is small, roughly 13x15, and furniture and the like leave little room for placement. My thought was that a sealed or front-ported speaker might work a bit better within the room's constraints.
This is just a computer based system, not going for multi-channel (although I might get a hi-rez soundcard) so I think Sonus Fabers or something might be a bit over the top.Just looking for decent sound in a small-room application.
The Omegas don't have any dealers in-state and may, in fact, be direct-from-manufacturer only. They have gotten crazy good press, but I was wondering if any of y'all had any practical experience. Any comments or suggestions are welcome...

    Cheers

You got it, you got it

I have not heard the speakers you mentioned. As a resonable priced alternative I would look at the Wharfedale 9.1 a bit higher the Castle Richmond 3 and if you are feeling flush the brand new ART Stiletto Monitor.

    Good luck

    Peace

And I'm certainly no elitist. Thing is, I'd be a jerk if I spoke out of ignorance: I've never heard of these Omegas, or even hear of them. I would like to read the good press you refer to, though.

By appearances they use full-range drivers of the Fostex ilk. I haven 't much experience listening any speakers of this type. I guess they have some reputation for have uneven frequency reponse and/or uneven dispersion. My bias would be to say that their main advantages are (1) they are typically quite efficient, and (2) they don't need crossover networks. They seem to be popular with the SET crowd, (if the SET "crowd" is indeed a crowd and not just a minute niche).

    Hey guys,
Thanks for the responses. Realistically, any moves on the computer system will be next month. Also, I think I'm going to try a new soundcard within the existing system and see how that helps. I will make a point of test driving anything I can get my paws on and will post results.

Confession time: I chose a slightly off-the-beaten-path speaker anticipating no responses, which of course gave me the opportunity to label everyone "elitist jerks". Oh, sarcasm--the last refuge of sons of *****es...

    Cheers to all elitist jerks

I'd be honored to become an elitist jerk!

I've heard of Omega but have never actually heard one before. I did own a 97dB sensitive pair of solid cherry Loth-X Audio Amaze single driver (Fostex) bookshelf monitors, which are probably similar spec-wise to the Grande 6s. Since I'm running an 8 WPC 300B single-ended tube amp, and the old Klipsch Cornwalls I used before (at 98.5dB 1W/1M) were physically way too big for my small 12 x 13.5 room, the Amaze were just the right size and at 8 ohms an easy load on my amp.

The Fostex single driver actually performed quite well (without the need for a tweeter and crossover network), with full, lush mids, and very convincing highs (cymbals actually shimmered better than some loudspeakers I've heard with tweeters)! With a powered sub, I had what sounded like fullrange loudspeakers (similar to my large horn-loaded Cornwalls). But the Loth-X did sound a bit harsh at higher levels, worse IMO than any horn-loaded loudspeaker I've heard, so I ended up selling them and going back to my trusty Triangle Zephyr 2-way towers, which are much smoother without sacrificing neutrality and dynamics. Only drawback to the Zephyrs are they're 91dB efficient, so my flea-powered amp has to work a bit more at the same levels I usually enjoy.

The Amaze are still decent single-driver monitors, but Loth-X Audio went out of business a few years ago. Plus I've heard that Omega uses a better designed Fostex driver than Loth-X did, which may explain why Omega's still going strong today! If the Amaze weren't so shrill at near-live levels, I'd still have 'em today (they were beautifully constructed, and the solid cherry cabinets were sweet)!

If I had the funds right now, I'd definately consider the Grande 6s...go for it, man!

    Great stuff jt!

Serious thanks for that post. That was the kind of info that will be helpful when i get down to business. As this will not be a main system I doubt I will be approaching max volume, so a problem for you might be a non-issue for me. Thanks for the overview...looke like I have a lot of options to explore.

    Cheers
