AAL speakers

Just curious...Anyone here ever heard of AAL speakers? I've owned two pairs for a long time. I bought the first pair in 1983. I always liked the sound of them, but I had never heard of them before I bought that pair and I never heard of them much again.

Interesting. I remember them like this, except with white woofers. The owner of this pair had the woofers replaced or reconed, I suppose. I stole this picture from a craigslist ad, since I'm too lazy to photograph mine. I think maybe these are the 12-inch version. Mine are smaller...I have an 8-inch/2-way pair and a 10-inch/3-way pair. The 10-inch pair is actually serving mostly as just speaker stands for another set.

I have a pair of AAL 154's. they have big old boomin' 15" woofers. I remember back in the early 80's they started putting them(AAL's) out on the display stereos at sears and Lazarus here in Ohio. I think I bought my first pair with a Pioneer receiver. at the time, there was a lot of talk about them taking over the medium priced speaker market. these 154's are rated at 260 watts. I was actually thinking about selling these. that's how I got here. I wanted to see if there was much of a demand. they sound great, especially for those who like that booming bass. the mids and tweeters are real clear and crisp.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but American Acoustics Labs (AAL) speakers were more profit builders for retailers than legitimate loudspeakers. Lots of boom and sizzle, but no musicality at all. Don't expect much. Even Bose speakers were better.

I own a nice pair of MTX AAL-154 speakers. they are great speakers, great bass, but they are VERY BRIGHT sounding, i would htink more for DJ use than home listening, i hooked them up for about 4 hours t his afternoon & tested them with many many various ytpes of music, new remastered cds, old cds, LP's, they are nice, but bright. good cabinets. hooked back my BIC america dv-84's and much better sound from those. the MTX are good value for the price i paid, but good for a large room, where reflection is at a minimum, or with heavy carpet to soak u p the high freq, i have hardwood floors, so they were very bright, would be better in a carpeted room or with cloth furniture. buut overall a good speaker, no their not snell, or paradigm, but their descent speakers for playing loud in a large room.

When I started this thread I was talking about these, which I had not photographed at the time. I ran across them in a pawn shop and used them with a little Marantz integrated...a 1040, I think.
