    HDDVD for dirt cheap!

Titles are starting to show up for under $10. Players are going for as low as $79 and the 360 add-on can be found for $50.

Anybody gonna bite on a nice upconverting DVD player that just so happens to play HD?

What about you guys that already gotta HD player...are you gonna stock up on a few dirt cheap titles?

    Hey L.J.

I think it was Dave (drseid) who first talked on these boards about the tremendous, almost archival, nature of the HD-DVD catalogue. As such I can see myself grabbing an older title or two, or maybe something that I was on the fence about---you know the old "I don't feel like paying thirty bucks for that" deal.

Frankly though, I'm pretty happy with Blu-Ray . I would imagine anything I could envision myself watching a year or two from now I would purchase on that format.

    Cheers

    Cool

Its not just an "upconverting" DVD player, its gonna have complications involved in playing
    HD.
LONG run this stuff will be absolutely worthless, you're gonna get everything in blu sooner or later so why waste your money?
Now if you catch em throwing some in the dumpster...

I still have a VHS player and about 20 movies that I still use sometimes. I replaced most with DVD but the ones left over are things my kids like to watch. I figure I can use it until it blows up. Now I wonder if my A2 will last for 11 years like my JVC. Still running strong baby

When I had DirecTV (pre-DVR) I recorded Training Day with Denzel Washington on my old mono VCR (like a dummy I didn't realize that it wasn't HiFi), and I still watch it now and then. His greatest performance IMO & the Academy's opinion too.

Do you want the DVD? I will be glad to give it to you so you will let go of that tape machine. No self serving HT loving person should have the distinct displeasure of having to see video noise, and a rewind button.

Oh my God! A "Sir T" sighting!
What's up "Sir T"?! Where ya been?!

Yesterday, you were summoned to "GMichael's" Thread, "What's most important....."
Actually, it was I who wanted to be entertained by your perspective. It was rumored that the thread was beneath you. Would that happen to be true?
Not only that, but a concession to one of your points of view was publicly announced and you missed it!

Well, the VCR matches the DVR (silver) and it fills space in the TV stand. I'll just make sure not to ever invite a "videofile" over.

I guess there's some utility in getting a HD-DVD player for that price. Some of the HD-DVD titles might take a while before they get released on Blu-ray, so if you really want certain titles in HD, then I guess there's no harm in going with HD-DVD if the entry price is now that low. It's similar to me buying a SACD player primarily so that I could listen to the SF Symphony's Mahler series in multichannel audio. Of course in that case, there is no competing format that will support those multichannel Mahler tracks anytime soon, so SACD really was my only alternative.

As for VCRs, I still use my VCR because I have a collection of TV broadcasts (some dating back to the mid-80s) that I have no intention of transferring over to DVD (not enough time and not worth the trouble), and I don't use a DVR (won't even bother with upgrading my Directv box until I upgrade the entire chain over to HD).

Lets hope that is the case, or I'll not "bee" buyin it. Now how you goin to sell a disc for $31.92 for a format that has been kicked to the curb, walk on, slapped, kicked in the balls, and runover by a 18 wheeler? And we need look no further than our own Sir T & Wooch for that brutal demonstration!

Actually I might be willing to buy an HD-DVD player just to fill up audio cabinet shelves, and impress my friends. (Hey! What friends... errr, I mean... what do my friends know? )

I am finishing up my review on that title for bluray.com If you are looking for a cute movie, with top notch PQ(a perfect 10), pretty good SQ(I hated the original songs, the guy's singing sucked), Open Season is the ticket.

In other words you have made the decision to let these tapes "go".
I had a lot of stuff I recorded with S-VHS, and the purchase of a DVD recorder was one of the best investments I EVER MADE.
And really nessesary if you ever get a DVR, because there will be stuff you want to save off of it.
Since they are all SD you might as well get one, will need one sooner or later.
Took a few weeks to transcribe my collection over, some was priceless,
    especially the talk shows.
And I have a recording of what I was watching when 911 hit.
And its not just for archive purposes, I have a lot of concerts off of MHD, some movies off of premium channels, etc.
A DVD recorder is like a VCR, only with a much better quality.
I couldnt live without one, just as I used to be unable to live without a S-VHS

Dang....so much for the Bee Movie! Man I'm glad I went with Bluray

We've received word from Paramount that DreamWorks Animation will also follow its studio parent and end HD DVD support. DreamWorks Animation sole remaining HD DVD release, 'Bee Movie' (originally scheduled for March 11) has been cancelled. We've updated our database accordingly.

Here is the skinny on this LJ. They are getting Bee movie ready for bluray. It has already been authored, and pretty much ready to go. However here is the rub. Toshiba has not paid Paramount/Dreamworks all of the money they owe them for sticking it out with HD DVD. So both studios are in negotiations now to try and get as much of the $150 million they can get. That is why it is taking Dreamworks so long to announce their switch to bluray, they do not want to piss Toshiba off, so they are going to let Toshiba work this out before making any announcement. Its coming, that is for sure, but them benji's mean alot to Paramount/Dreamworks cause they know they have pissed off alot of bluray supporters with their lame switching of sides.

    "Sir T",

Pleas forgive my ignorance, but I don't understand the significance of the bluray supporters being pissed off. The demand for the Paramount/Dreamworks movies will be on high! Doesn't benefit the bluray camp?! Or is this a "spite" issue!?! School me, my Brutha!

It is spite, and a wee bit of unforgiveness as well. I think it was the way Paramount/Dreamworks did it(just cutting everything off, pulling things off shelves, and not setting a timetable) that really set everyone off. I think once their movies hit the streets, all will be forgiven. What Paramount and Dreamworks want is that Toshiba money though. They are not going to rock the boat on that one. Negotiation are going as we speak, so I think within the next few weeks(or maybe sooner) you will start to see title announcements trickle out. Alot of folks at Paramount are glad to be supporting bluray again, they really like the format alot.

Thanks for the clarification. I not long ago purchased the new Panny. I haven't un-boxed it yet because I haven't purchased any blu ray movies yet. But I will. I know the new Sony 550 is coming soon. Do you think it will be a better player than the Panny DMP-BD30K? You'd think Sony being the major contributor to Blu ray, they would make the best players, but that hasn't been the case. And I apologize for just responding to your answer, it's a Friday and it's always a rat race on Fridays!

An addendum to my last post: Sony does make good Blu ray players. When I made my observation, I was not including the PS3. We all know that PS3 is a great solution for BD playback. So I apologize if I offended anyone with the previous post.
