This is a thread on "how" it happened, with the thought that it
might not have happened with a little corporate responsibility
on Sony's part.
CRIMINALS are going to do what they do, mounting a proper defense would have prevented this whole episode.
THERE WAS a ton of user information on this site, and
SONY'S RESPONSIBILITY to the users was obvious,
and neglected.
HERES hoping they do better in the future.

THE Sony servers were a target of opportunity . If you leave a
suitcase full of hundred dollar bills on the curb, security types
won't show much sympathy when it disapears.
AND I am a security type. And when a crime occurs the
"reason" is the opportunity more often than the motive.

in the security. Sometimes you can create a breech, but most
times its much simpler to take advantage of an already occurring
flaw in the fortress wall.
AS USUAL you are concerned more with insignificant details
than the actual reasons as to what happened.
You can track down these criminals, catch them, and a motive will
help, sure. BUT QUITE often a motive is not known until the perp
is in sight. THEY don't leave notes at the scene of the crime
as to why they did the crime, savew for some terrorist groups.

CAN'T SEE the forest for the trees, as usual, about as dense as

Sony was forwarned about the dangers of their setup, and chose to ignore it. That's criminal negligence imho and they should be heavily fined and charged with whatever the law can throw at them.

Sorry but this does not fly. You are addressing HOW, not why. The reason for the hack has nothing to do with how. When you understand the difference, you can see that the clueless OP did not address the reason at all, but how it was done.

The older version of Apache is not the reason Sony was hacked. The REASON Sony was hacked was because of Sony attempt to prosecute George Hotz for jail breaking his PS3, and posting that information on you tube and his website. Read:

Payback was the reason. Stealing ID's and CC# was to prove that they actually did what they said they would do.

AND if you couldn't hack their site the people who did this would have moved on to the next one.

History has proven over and over that there really is no defense against hacking. Even the Department of Defense knows this, they have been hacked repeatedly over the years. Hackers can always find an opportunity in cyberspace. An old troll like you probably does not know this.

I know more than you think.
And why they hacked SONY is a "motive", but the reason
they hacked SONY is because it was a target of opportunity,
the only reason criminals ever break into anything.
With a proper defense it might very well not have happened.
AS FOR HACKS into govt sites, this is more an example of govt incompetence more than anything else.
