Warner Offers DVD to Blu-ray Trade-In Program

Much like Warner's previous HD-DVD to Blu-ray trade-in program, they've now launched an upgrade program for their catalog DVDs. The selection is currently limited to catalog titles that have been on the market for a while, and many of these titles have already seen heavy discounting by retailers. And the selection is not all-inclusive with only about 50 titles shown on Warner's website.

The price per upgrade is $8 to $10 each, and customers are allowed up to 25 upgrades. Some of the titles on the website I've already seen reduced to as low as $12 during sales, so it's not that huge a price break (especially after accounting for shipping charges) if you're only looking to upgrade a few titles. But, if you have a large collection of those old Warner DVDs in their snapper cases, this might be a good opportunity to clear out some shelf space.

The only drawback to this program compared to Warner's HD-DVD upgrade program is that you have to send the disc along with the case and wait 4-5 weeks (the HD-DVD program only required sending the case).

Just read Bill Hunt's summation of the trade-in program on The Digital Bits, and he indicated that Warner will be expanding on the titles available for upgrade. That would be very nice because I got a lot of Warner's old snapper cases that I'd like to get rid of!

Look for Disney's version of this same exchange program in the future.
