My pick of the week is "Seven" by Sunny Day Real Estate. After spouting off about how much I dislike The Fire Theft record, I decided to go back to Diary and give it a spin. Emo or whatever it is -- it doesn't matter -- it's good rock music. I saw these guys live before they broke up (the second time) and they played "Seven" as part of the encore. It absolutely rocked and I love the studio version too.

Can I post here without quoting an entire lyric? I know so few.

If I can, I'll pick; "Blame it on the Tetons", from Modest Mouse's Good News fro People who Like Bad News. I'm a sucker for MMs slower, country-tinged songs - "Wild Packs of Family Dogs" is one of my favorites from The Moon and Antarctica - and though the album has a lot of songs that I liked right away, this is the song that leapt out at me demanding a repeat listen. As I said above this is a beautiful, country-tinged song that sounds only a little out of place nestled around the usual Modest Mouse frenetics, but which only serves to help it to stand out.

I took too long getting this album. It's not the epic that is "The Moon..." but it's got a bunch of good songs and sounds like a keeper. The new drummer really gives them a more straight-ahead rock sound of the type heard on the single; "Float On". The other song that left an immediate impression was the oddly titled "Bukowski"

I still haven't listened to Modest Mouse's latest album even though I've had a preview copy over a month now. I just haven't felt a desire to hear it really, even though I love M&A and Lonesome Crowded West. Maybe I'll break it out this weekend and give 'er a listen.

Mine is "This Man Will Not Hang" from McLusky's latest. I see it's getting kinda mixed reviews but I think it's at least equal to their previous albums. The last album saw Albini's influence in the recording. This one takes on a bit of Shellac's mathy tendencies and it blends really well with McLusky's previously established sound IMO.

I'll go with Morrissey's First of the Gang to Die from his latest, excellent song and I really like this release thus far. I've seen mixed reviews, but I think it's some of his best solo work. A little musical updating, some of the better musical backing he's had in some time, but basically vintage Morrissey. Be careful picking it up though, I got screwed. There are three versions, one normal, one with a gatefold, and another with a gatefold with bonus DVD. I accidently ended up paying extra for the gatefold without the DVD, a ripoff to my mind.
