    What are you listening to

I notice on a few other audio sites that there is an on going thread regarding music listening. So I am proposing such a thread to help boost site numbers and general interest on the site

Great idea, R1, and I've often wondered why there wasn't one around here -- maybe having one will up participation.

OK, so last night I listen to ...

Dmitri Shostakovich: Symphony No. 7, "Leningrad" ~ Dmitri Yablonsky conducting the Russian Philharmonic Orchestra

... playing on Foobar2000. Pretty decent performance and sound.

Below is the first 1/4 to 1/3 of my late Spring manual playlist (from cds and vinyl). I started keeping a running list on my phone in an effort to see how long I could go without repeating something. (Yeah, that's how I spend my free time.) Of course the list on my phone uses key words and phrases. It takes awhile to type out all the info so I might post more later.

Run Run Run, The Notwist, Record Store Day Run Run Run EP
    Poor Places, Wilco, YHF
NYC, Interpol, Turn on the Bright Lights
Collective Dreamwish of Upperclass Elegance, Grandaddy, Under the Western Freeway
Good Arms vs. Bad Arms, Frightened Rabbit, The Midnight Organ Fight
Feeling Yourself Disintegrate, The Flaming Lips, The Soft Bulletin
Jocko Homo, Devo, Butch Devo and the Sundance Gig (live 1995)
Make it Funky, Pt 1, James Brown, 20 All-Time Greatest Hits
    Clint Eastwood, Gorillaz, ST
    Dirty Harry, Gorillaz, Demon Days
Feel Good, Inc., Gorillaz, Demon Days
    Unreal, UNKLE, Psyence Fiction
Something's Got to Give, Beastie Boys, Check Your Head
    Debra, Beck, Midnite Vultures

This is my current country/Americana playlist:

Why Don't You Love Me (Like You Used to Do), Hank Williams, The Last Picture Show Soundtrack
Lovesick Blues, Hank Williams, The Last Picture Show Soundtrack
Jambalaya (On the Bayou), Hank Williams, The Last Picture Show Soundtrack
San Antonio Rose, Bob Wills' Original Texas Playboys, Legends of Country Music: The Best of Austin City Limits
Way Down Town, Doc Watson, Legends of Country Music: The Best of Austin City Limits
Blue Monday (best version ever), Fats Domino, Legends of Country Music: The Best of Austin City Limits
Cryin' Time, Buck Owens, Legends of Country Music: The Best of Austin City Limits
Gentle on My Mind, Glen Campbell, Legends of Country Music: The Best of Austin City Limits
Do Right Woman, Flying Burrito Brothers, The Gilded Palace of Sin
Hickory Wind (live), Gram Parsons, Grievous Angel
Las Vegas, Gram Parsons, Grievous Angel

Great bassist. Arguably a contender for best in the business these days. Love it when he uses the bow. Can't beat a good trio. They sound lively and tight. Interesting compositions and he's only getting better.

That's high-larious! There are a few that make me smile, too. I used to have an anti-country bias, but now I can appreciate a good song (to my ears) no matter the genre. Hank Williams' voice used to get on my nerves, but now I dig his phrasing and his band is just so mellow. I like well-done pedal steel. There's some quality music in country; however, I don't hear it on the radio. Takes some digging around. Then there's the western side of country that provokes images of big Texas dance halls, the Bakersfield sound of which Buck Owens is a pioneer. Hell, I never thought I'd like Buck Owens after being "forced" to watch HeeHaw as a kid. Then, cosmic American music of Gram Parsons, the outlaws like Waylon and Willie and singer-song writers like Townes Van Zandt. Well, you get the picture. There's alot out there that's just kinda lumped into "country". I couldn't tell you who's at the top of the country charts today. The contemporary country music I've heard doesn't do anything for me.

I hear a lot of it now, my boss is a big country fan. But I hear in the lyrics of some of the newer stuff references to rap slang and artist. I mean when did country boys roll on 28" rims booming T-pain, I'm just saying.

Energetic. Lively. Polyrhythmic. Urban. Folk. Afro-cuban... I dunno.
She's got a great talent for looping herself back into her songs.

    Slate:
Her songs skedaddle up and down sonic hills and valleys like an avant-junkman’s jalopy, sounding the polyphonic steam-whistle of her remarkable voice in beckoning and in warning, while the injustices and sicknesses of society drag behind like a tangle of barbed fences that the cart has barreled through.

I don't think the video below really sells the album. Maybe just close your eyes and listen.
