Van Lear Rose - Loretta Lynne (Jack White)

I forced myself to listen to this one a couple of three times at work this week. Although it wouldn't make my top 50, it is definitely a grower. The more you listen the more you feel Jack's influence. If Loretta's song-story Little Red Shoes doesn't pull at your heartstrings, well.... you may need to be re-strung.

Eleni Mandell - Snakebite - Why isn't she a huge success????

Death Cab for Cutie - Something About Airplanes

Nick Drake - Way to Blue (compilation) - I'm afraid he bores me.

Hawksley Workman - Treeful of Starling

Yippee! The reall Hawksley is back after that horrid Lover/Fighter where the record execs tried to make him radio-friendly! And I got the Limited edition with collectible cards that was sold out on his website at Walmart for 15.98!!!

I'm saving this sucker for my vaction next week!

Rilo Kiley - More Adventurous - Great range from blues to rock to emo to pop! Must get some Jenny Lewis!

Do you think this Rilo Kiley song is about Bush?

    It's A Hit

Any chimp can play human for a day.
Use his opposable thumbs to iron his uniform
and run for office on election day
fancy himself a real decision maker
and deploy more troops than salt in a shaker.

But it's a jungle when war is made,
and you'll panic and throw your own **** at the enemy.
The camera pulls back to reveal your true identity.
    Look, it's a sheep in wolf's clothing.
    A smoking gun holding ape.

Any ******* can open up a museum.
Put all of the things he loves on display
    so everyone could see them.
The house, a car, a thoughtful wife
ordinary moments in his ordinary life.

But if she breaks a smile, she'll give you away
'cause no one wants to pay to see your happiness.
No one wants to pay to see your day to day
and I'm not buying it either
but I'll try selling it anyway.

Any idiot can play Greek for a day
and join a sorority or write a tragedy
    and articulating all that pain
    and maybe you'll get paid.

But it's a sin when success complains,
    and your writers block-it don't mean ****.
Just throw it against the wall and see what sticks.
    Gotta write a hit
    I think this is it.
    It's a hit.

    And if it's not,
then it's a holiday for hanging
yeah it's a holiday for hanging
yeah it's a holiday for hanging
    yeah shoo-bop-shoo-bop my baby

Any fool can play executioner for a day,
and say with fingers pointed in both directions
    'he went thataway',
It's only a switch or syringe,
    aww, exempt from eternal sins.
But you still wear a cross,
and you think you're gonna get in.

Ah, but the pardons never come from up-stairs.
They're always a moment too late,
    but it's entertainment
keep the crowd on their toes,
    it's justice, we're safe.
    It's not a hit, it's a holiday
    shoo-bop-shoo-bop my baby

It's a holiday for hanging, yeah
It's a holiday for hanging, yeah
It's a holiday for hanging, yeah
It's a holiday for hanging, yeah

    I'm a holiday for hanging,
    I'm a holiday for hanging,
    I'm a holiday yeah
    I'm a holiday for hanging,

It's a holiday for hanging, yeah

I suppose the next thing you're going to tell us is that you're a huge Jeff Buckley fan, too.
And the world will turn to flowing pink vapor stew.

    Oh puh-leeze! Isn't there a Junior Buckley, too? I did try. Here's some other I consider snooze-worthy:

Beck - Sea Change (only one I have)
Ron Sexsmith (I'll mention him in spite of a little maple leaf guilt)
    The Cowboy Junkies

Give me some time and I'll think of some more.

What the hell's wrong with you, Honeypie? You send me crap like Nine Horses - Snow Bourne Sorrow but not Lisa Germano - Geek the Girl?

I just put it on for the first time and after the intro bit of the first song, I was a goner!!! And then the phone rang.

    Isn't that always the way?

One man's crap is another man's dinner. You can't always get what you want. Life in the foodchain, Sugar. And it's do or die...it's push and shove...

    because everybody's hungry
    and there isn't quite enough
that's right we're talkin' about the good life
    in the foodchain
    love among the ruins
i guess that you've finally got to accept
that there's nothing you can do about it
it's kind of like carving a turkey
kind of like mowing the lawn:
everything gets to this certain dimension
winds up on a customer's plate and then gone

I'm glad I got to read the monkey story before you deleted it. I guess some could've been offended if read literally, but it spoke volumes metaphorically. Was that an original?

Don't give up on Nick Drake. Listen to the great production. Listen to that great singing style and how he holds those notes so well. Listen to those great melodies and tragically youthful lyrics.

When I first discovered Nick Drake, I couldn't get enough of him for about three years. Kinda like when I was in my Moody Blues phase, and later my Everything But The Girl phase.

Every once in a while there is a performer or band that comes along that just has it all right for me. I still love to listen to Nick Drake.

I've been listening to way too much Joy Division lately. Started off by pulling out Unknown Pleasures, my general favorite. Then played Closer...still wanted more, so I pulled out the Peel Sessions EPs, and tossed on the compilation Still while I was at it. Damn, that was one amazing band. And, considering I really love New Order too...just astounding.

Also, been playing a bunch of Kraftwerk. Started with Autobahn, and went through most of their catalog. My wife never was a fan, but heard them in the xcar and asked who it was and when they were from. When I told her they were from the 70s, autobahn was playing, she was really amazed at how far ahead of theior time they were. She's still not a fan, but it was interesting that even someone that doesn't like them can see how trailblazing they were.

Also some Minutemen, the new Prince, a bunch of reggae, William Orbit, some Louis Armstrong and Count Basie (really was digging the Count Basie/Sarah Vaughn record), a little Lee Morgan, and some Howlin' Wolf.

    That's enough for now.
