Something Different

I don't know if anyone here is into "Stage & Screen" music............I have a twenty-year old daughter that loves Broadway musicals and knows every word of many classics (as opposed to listening to rock or pop music).

For Christmas, I bought her the 5-year anniversary CD release of WICKED from the original cast.........the sonics on this disc are very good and of course the performances are excellent.
Schwartz wrote a hit library here......I'm wondering how much $$$ the guy is making ?

Great to know. Thanks MC. I love musical theatre and enjoy listening to a good soundtrack. I recently borrowed my Mom's copy of Evita, the movie and was really disappointed in the sound quality. It's good to hear that Wicked is well recorded. I'll look into it for my collection.

I'm interested to know which stage/screen musical soundtracks folks here have in their collections-- I've got a couple... West Side Story, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, and Porgy and Bess, all from the films. I guess I've listen to them all fairly recently. As a little kid, I was inexplicably obsessed with Godspell and definitely had that soundtrack at one time ("there is no Broadway ditty closer to my heart than 'Day Bidet'."). I also always casually look for any version of the Little Shop of Horrors soundtrack on vinyl when I'm record shopping.

I guess that's a short list.

EDIT: Oh, I guess I also have The Sound of Music. Less spun.

I'm not conversant on "Wicked" but I have most of the Gilbert and Sullivan stuff that was released on Grammaphon a while back...H.M.S. Pinnafore and Mikado are standouts. I came around from rather the opposite path, by way of Italian opera. Maybe wet your or her appetite with Verdi's Il trovatore or La Forza del Destino.

Nice to read that she's interested in stuff out of the mainstream though given dad's proclivities that's to be expected. Nice work...

Thank you.
She is much more educated in music history than her friends.
In addition, can sing and dance very well................knows every word of anything from Andrew Lloyd Webber or any of the animated musicals from Disney.

She won third place in a national duet competition performing "What is This Feeling ?" from WICKED...............her duet partner (playing the other witch) was the younger sister of Amy Lee (Evanescence).
The two girls created their own choreography and presentation............I got to see it about a hundred times during rehearsals.
After the national competition, they took first place at the state level the next year.

She is now a junior at the University of Texas with a double-major in Theater and English.

In terms of "something different" I had a rather singular experience last night. I've been temporarily displaced (with the folks for the holidays) and, so, the musical fare has been largely classical and jazz.
At some point I pulled out Bill Evans' Moon Beams which features, among other things, Christa Päffgen on the cover. I've been into a sullenly exploratory mood given the death of Pete "Sleazy" Christopherson anyway and it led to to a late night, jaunt through the collection starting with Nico and moving on to a strange rogue's gallery of artists subsequently influenced by the lady...

The little sister is in her own band and, though not as polished as Amy, every quality is there................and I would even say has a stronger (louder) voice.
Little sister is currently a music major at Belmont University (Nashville).
