    Pitchforkmedia.com's Top 50 for 2005
I believe MonkeyBoy already reported on this but Pitchfork has now officially published their Top 50 for 2005. Thoughts? Do you concur with the list? Disagreements?

I think I've heard of some of those artists...ok some of those artists do get talked about here now and then, but I can honestly say that I've not heard one note from any of them. So, as a list of Top-50 songs that I'm not likely to ever hear, its pretty concise.

    Glad to see you, Mary.

After looking over the list, I am surprised that the Silver Jews, Bloc Party and Spoon efforts didn't rank higher, and that Sufjan Stevens "Illinois" and Bonnie Prince Billy were ranked as they were. Surprised in the sense that I don't feel they deserved the high ratings, in the scheme of how good releases were in 2005, but not surprised in the regard that they have gotten alot of positive press. Personally, I haven't been that impressed with either (which I own on vinyl).

However, the list (and supplied descriptions) made me extremely curious about new Pornographers, Love is All, Clap Your Hands, Sleater Kinney, Jamie Lidell, Franz Ferdinand, Mountain Goats, Fiery Furnaces, The Boy Least Likely To, and Roisin Murphy. If you can shed some light here, the feedback would be appreciated.

Good to hear from you, 3 LockBox. I only own 5 of these, and have a few more on order. Purchased because of recs here or other sites...

Hi AG! I picked up that New Pornographers disk a few weeks ago and it's been in steady rotation ever since. I absolutely love it and it's, for sure, in my top 10 this year....if not my top 5.

    I don't have your new address...PM me.

If I weren't listening to XMU on my new satelite radio this past month I would not have heard or known of most of these bands, especially at the top. #'s 3-10 have been stand outs though and I look forward to hearing more of them. Though I'm not sure I'll be buying many of them.

Yeah, AG, I could really see you liking the New Pornographers record. Regarding the others, I'm guessing that Sleater-Kinney wouldn't be your style, but I could be wrong? Have you heard any of their stuff?

That is not a rational statement. How many albums on the list have you actually listened to? I doubt it's been much more than the two you mention.

Responding more generally, I was happy to see LCD Soundsystem so high up on the list, because that is a really really fun album for me. I bought that album on the same day as the dreary, respectable Arcade Fire album from last year. And it was such a nice contrast for me about where I want music to be now vs. what I'm really tired of (even in a such and admittedly high-quality incarnation such as Arcade Fire).

Yeah, that's pretty darned good. I only have 7 of the titles listed there. In addition, I have 2005 bootlegs of some more of the shows so I feel I have a pretty good handle on whether or not it's going to be for me. That brings the total up to the amazing sum of 12.

Personally I think Pitchfork may have squirreled on us this year.

Stay far, far away. Don't think Wolf Parade would be your thing either but who can tell? Try some mp3 samples.

That's one awful list Pitchfork put together. I've only heard eight of those albums completely and of them only like three. A lot of the stuff there only took me a couple of mp3s to know they weren't for me. I'd put Stephen Malkmus, Rogue Wave, SFA, Andrew Bird, AmAnSet, 13 & God, Fruit Bats, DCfC, and Calexico/Iron & Wine before anything they have in their top twentyfive. The only thing on that list that I haven't yet heard that I'm looking forward to is the Silver Jews.

The only list that matters to me is my own.

I'm still having trouble with my year-end list. To wit:

    - Haven't heard the new Ephel Duath yet;
    - That Nine Horses disk is blowing me away -- I have to wonder if it's the folly of novelty, or if it's really good;
    - Haven't heard that Earth disk yet;
    - Haven't heard many of those disks more than once (I mean, how many times do I have to listen to Autechre?).

    Give me 'til...March...2010...

I probably didn't buy enough current releases this year to fill out a top 10 list...so here's my lame-ass, me-too Top 5 List:

    1. Spoon - Gimme Fiction
    2. My Morning Jacket - Z
    3. The New Pornographers - Twin Cinema
    4. Porcupine Tree - Deadwing
    5. British Sea Power - Open Season

Wilco's remarkable live set, Kicking Television, deserves an honorable mention, although I usually don't like to include live or best-of albums on such lists. And from what I've heard from that Rogue Wave disc so far, Slosh might just be right about it (I'll be buying it if it doesn't show up in my stocking).

New-to-me titles that deserve honorable mention, even though they were released in 2004 or earlier, include Spoon's Kill the Moonlight, Secret Machines' Now Here Is Nowhere, Crooked Fingers' Red Devil Dawn, and Green Day's American Idiot.

Remaster of the year goes to Born to Run, as much for the incredible live DVD as for the excellent CD remaster.

I've been in the process of going through literally hundreds of new releases for about a month to make my annual "Best of" CD compilation. Not that any one cares or should take notice, but here's a dozen of the best tracks on my compilation. I was going to do a single a week but ran out of room on 2 discs at 48 unique artists:

    2005's Standout Track:
    The Tears: The Lovers
    and the rest:
The Fiery Furnaces: Tropical Ice-land (re-released in 2005)
The Magic Numbers: Love Me Like You
    Wolf Parade: Grounds for Divorce
    Maximo Park: Apply Some Pressure
The Caesars: Jerk it Out (re-released in 2005)
    The Doves: Some Cities
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah: Over and Over Again
    Dead 60's: Riot Radio
    The Editors: Blood
    Goldfrapp: Number 1
    Babyshambles: 32nd of December
    British Sea Power: Stand Up
Paul Weller: From the Floorboards Up
    Album of the Year:
    BSP: Open Season
    Big Hope for 2006:
    The Boy Least Likely

For reference: Here's some of the best of last year's comp:
    2004's Standout Track
    The Delays: Long Time Coming
    and the rest
    Franz Ferdinand: Take Me Out
The Ordinary Boys: Talk Talk Talk
    Razorlight: Rip it Up
Dogs Die in Hot Cars: Something off the Way
    The Zutons: Pressure
THe Streets: May Well Be In
THe Thrills: Whatever Happened to Corey Haim
Graham Coxon: Bittersweet Bundle of Misery
    The Futureheads: Meantime
The Libertines: Can't Stand Me Now
    Album of the Year:
    The Thrills: Let's Bottle Bohemia
    Big Hope for 2005:
    Devandra Banhart

I tend to glom on to singles so nothing on the list should be a huge surprise. I don't get a lot of (North) American music exposure so I probably miss a lot of its "critical" indie music. I actually had the Wolf Parade record before I even had heard of The Arcade Fire. I completely missed their "2004 Must-have" and to tell you the truth, it never really caught on with me in 2005. There are a few American/Canadian acts on my comp, but for years it has had a distinctly northern and Scottish focus to it.

It took a few listens to get the Thrills disc for me as I so loved their debut. In the end, it turned out to be the most listened to for me in 2004- hence the top album award.

I've saw the Zutons a couple times in 2003/2004 and the disc does them a great injustice compared to their live shows. My affection for the Zutons is forever skewed! The disc is a bit unfocused but has a couple gems- there are several tracks that I usually skip and, truth be told, I haven't listened to it in its entirety for months.

Simarily, I probably have inordinant affection for Snow Patrol and Idlewild due to their energy of their performances from four to six years ago. They are prior Album of the Year award winners that, sadly, didn't seem to latch on in the USA from what I can tell. Unfortunately, Idlewild's 2005 release flirts with an REM influence....

Funny, I heard Let's Bottle Bohemia first and loved it right away. So I then bought their debut and it's really never hit me the same way Bohemia did. I find it a little too low key for my tastes.

My first experience with The Zutons was a live show, opening for Keane. I really enjoyed them live (way better than Keane was live) and that's what led me to purchase their disk. I agree that their live show was very good. Had I heard the CD on it's own, before seeing them live, I'm not sure that I would have made the purchase. I hope that their next disk is a little more focused than the first.

Snow Patrol is another favourite of mine. Can't say that I've heard Idlewild though. I'll have to check them out.

Based on the bands that you've listed that you like, you should check out a Canadian band called Boy. You can hear a few of their songs at their web site....

All I have is 100 Broken Windows, which is absolutely brilliant in my book, and which I heard an R.E.M. influence from the very first spin. I don't know why I never picked up any other Idlewild albums, though they are not the easierst albums to find 'round these parts. Yeah, that is a good one. That opening volley of "Little Discourage" through to "Roseability" is a blast and a half, and the whole thing is full of fun little punk-poppers. The Remote Part was a good one too, but not as raw and urgent as that one. Drags a bit in the middle for me. More polished and ready for the British charts, which I think a couple of the singles rose pretty high up. Anyway, that's all I got. With a little nudge I'm sure Forever Autumn would remember that she has heard Idlewild on a little comp I did called Fun In The Sun which they closed out with one of those charming British singles from The Remote Part, think it was actually the third one they released. Pretty successful album in the UK. They did a cool little vid for that song with one of my favorite directors Wim Wenders ... http://www.xfm.co.uk/Article.asp?id=5252

Glad to help. It's a pretty nice little song, but also a little on the forgettable side when heard out of context, even though it was apparently released as a single. I always kind of liked it, but like ELT and PDK infer, much REM in that one. How's that for an acronym laden sentence? Except REM should have periods, and probably can't really be labelled an acronym, eh FA? ;)

I'll just pop up this image for awhile then edit it out later so it doesn't continually slow down the thread and make it too wide ... or maybe I'll forget and leave it since this thread is almost ready for the archives anyway ... but I remembered we had talked briefly about the Gockel paintings I used on the cover, which is what tipped me in the direction of remembering that I'd sent you a copy :)

I'm still brushing off the cobwebs, but I found the comp. Actually, I didn't have to dig all that deep. It was pretty close to the top of the pile which means that it was one that I liked and always meant to revisit when I had time. I guess I'm making the time now, huh? :D

The Idlewild song is playing now and, you're right, it is very nice. I hear the REM influence, but the opening is also reminding me a little of Green Day's Good Riddance (Time of Your Life). I'm not sure why that is...maybe the rambling guitar sounds. Anyway, this looks like a band that I'm going to have to add to the wishlist if the rest of the CD is along these same lines...is it? I hate when I buy a CD after hearing one song and the rest of the disk is a totally different style/sound.

My copy of Fun in the Sun has also been blessed with five bonus tracks, but no track list for them. I don't suppose you remember what you sent me? It was only a little less than two years ago, after all. ;)

Thanks for the link. iTunes isn't showing any track titles and Pyro isn't working properly (I think I need to reload it, but I'm leaning towards just replacing it with Nero.

There's also a cute little tiny freeware player that Sloshy and I have often mentioned around here called HACP that reads and displays the CD-TEXT on the disc ... http://www.xs4all.nl/~hneel/software.htm

Looks like this in use ...

You see I always thought of REM as a word unto itself instead of R.E.M., like SCUBA, is an acronym and a word. Well if it's not, it should be.

Merry Christmas to anyone has had made it this deep into the thread :)

    Hi Stone,

No, I have not heard any Sleater-Kinney songs, and am finding that iTunes snippets do not dictate whether I am going to enjoy a song/LP/release. Consequently, if intrigued enough, I purchase it on vinyl on the cheap, and if it's not to my liking, I just file it away for prosperity. ;-)

Guess what I am listening to right now? A Stone rec, if I am remembering it correctly ~ Rickie Lee Jones "Girl at Her Volcano" on Quiex II vinyl. Such a stunning recording and wonderful rendition of "Walk Away Renee". Great rec from the Stone Meister...

    Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays,

Yeah, can't go wrong with a rec from the Stone Meister. That's a colossal song. Think he's partial to the Left Banke, but who's not ;)

OOPS...I didn't recall that was your rec, Davey! Man, chalk it up to this 40-something-year-old's terrible memory. That post had quite an impact on me...I now own 3 copies of that release (the first copy purchased was fairly warped and a concern to spin; the second had a lot of irritating noise despite a pristine appearance; just purchased the 3rd on ebay recently...the guy who sold it finally had it right. It was a NM-!). Sorry for not giving credit where it was due. :-)
