One woman, one guitar, amazing

So I was roaming around youtube a bit recently checking out some Electrelane performances, and there's a few really nice ones, especially a Bard College show they did to kick off the tour for their new album, including "Eight Steps" from their last album, and "To The East" from the new one, both incredibly good and over way too quickly. Pretty good sound and vision as a bonus. Here's "To The East", one of my favorites from the new one ...



But the main reason for the post, and I know there's a couple other big time PJ Harvey fans around here, is this performance from Sydney in 2001, big crowd, big stage, and just little Polly in her red dress and guitar, but man, what a leg-lickin' performance!

...I kept a-waitin' and a-waitin'...Where's the payoff? Never before have so few components caused me to nod so easily...With a voice sounding at times like an air-raid siren and guitar work that makes The Ramones sound complicated, this is what passes for entertainment?

Well, like I said in the post, it was mainly for big fans like myself, and yeah, highly entertaining. The way she seemed to captivate the whole crowd, even the security people seemed to be transfixed. Quite a performance. And you could tell how much the crowd loved it, as almost in unison they erupted at the end. Had me smiling the whole time, and the next few times I watched it too.

But I love PJ. Those first couple records they did were two of the best of the last decade for many of us, powerful and bluesy rock in the tradition of those early Patti Smith records.

Ah, don't be so hard on yourself, we all love you anyway. But here's another pretty cool performance with her band from a 1998 festival, this one another of my favorites from her second CD, with the slide guitar brought more out front giving it a more relaxed sound ...

Oh its a good single performance. I don't know that its gonna make me a fan or go out and buy the CD, from one of the really hip, underground college record stores, you know, the ones staffed by 'not really goth but they wear black lipstick and fishnet stockings, and so they look kinda kinky' college aged girls (but they're not enrolled) who aren't entirely comfortable answering so many questions...

Still, its a gutsy performance and she has more balls than I do to go out in front of that big a crowd and sing such a sexually charged song, all by her lonesome. Well, I could do it, but what is she saying..."Lick my legs, I'm on fire"? I doubt my rendition would go over as well.

Anyhoo, I'm impressed all to hell that you know how to paste the actual performance onto the thread instead of only using a link. Very cool. Bravo. Encore.

Actually, PJ Harvey is really only a notch or two below mainstream, and has been major label most of her career, so you may not find all the CDs at Walmart, but she is pretty popular. That underground college store with the kinky chicks you normally shop at for all you prog goodies may find her a bit too conventional

Well, they do provide the code at youtube ready for pasting, so it doesn't really require much brainpower. I guess you're just easily impressed. And I already did the encore

Hey, that's pretty cool. She's a good singer, nice look too. Hmmm, looks like the record just came out last week, have you heard it yet?

What about Carina Round? The latest moved a bit too commercial for my taste, but the earlier stuff is pretty nice ...



Those Electrelane girls really got something going on this latest one, with lots of that Kraftwerk / Neu sound getting in the mix. I think it's their best yet. Reminds me of early Stereolab in some places, but with more guitar rhythm, kind of the Feelies, but still with the German/French angle. Mia can get pretty wild on her guitar too. They just played around here last month opening for Arcade Fire, and there's some footage on youtube ...
