    New 7-disc Sly and the Family Stone Box $39.99

    Just a heads up for all you fans, Best Buy has Sony's upcoming new Sly & Family Stone box with the first 7 CDs, all remastered with a bunch of bonus tracks, and available for pre-order with a BB exclusive bonus DVD this week for $39.99. Yea, I know, support the indies and just say no to the big box record store killers like BB, but this is one pretty sweet deal! Just popped for one myself, but don't know how long it'll last since next week is the release date. Have a few old LPs, but never had any Sly on CD except for a very crappy sounding collection.

    Dude, that is porn to my eyes. Awesome stuff.

    I hope that's on Rhino and not something with the high freq slashed down to remove tape hiss and then boosted back up to compensate (duh!) and then compressed all to hell.

    Sony by Vic Anesini, who I think do a better job than Rhino on a lot of this remaster/reissue stuff. Looks like a blast. Below from http://www.starpulse.com/news/index....family_ston_10

    For the first (and last!) time, newly remastered, numbered expanded editions will be issued of all seven albums - with multiple (four to seven) bonus tracks on each CD (a total of 33 bonus tracks, 21 of them previously unreleased) and brand new liner notes written by some of today's top music journalists. The seven albums will be manufactured in a strict limited edition run of custom digipaks, and they will not be re-pressed when they sell out. All seven albums will arrive in stores March 20th on Epic/Legacy, a division of Sony BMG Music Entertainment. Additionally, the seven titles will be available as a numbered, limited-edition box set.

    "…you also hear Prophet Sly's seminal formulas for the next forty years of Great Black Pop - meaty, big and bouncy slabs of musical science that would be applied by everybody from psychedelic Temptations producer Norman Whitfield and Isaac Hayes to Philadelphia International, Earth, Wind & Fire, P-Funk, Miles Davis, Prince, Steely Dan, De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Pharcyde, OutKast and The Roots." - Greg Tate, from the new liner notes to Dance To The Music

    All seven albums were produced for reissue by Bob Irwin, and were mastered by Vic Anesini at Sony Music Studios in New York. An overview of the seven albums' contents is as follows:

    -A Whole New Thing (released late-1967), with "Trip To Your Heart," "Run, Run, Run," five bonus tracks including mono single versions of the B-sides "Let Me Hear It From You" and "Underdog," plus a previously unreleased instrumental track; with original liner notes by San Francisco-Oakland DJ John Hardy and new liner notes by Bud Scoppa;
    -Dance To The Music (1968), with the Top 10 title hit, six bonus tracks including mono single versions of "Dance To the Music" and "Higher," and three previously unreleased tracks (including Otis Redding's "Can't Turn You Loose"); with original liner notes by Sly and New York DJ Al Gee, and new liner notes by Greg Tate;
    -Life (1968), with the title tune single b/w "M'Lady," four bonus tracks including a mono single version of "Dynamite!" and three previously unreleased tracks; with original liner notes by New York DJ Rosko, and new liner notes by Ben Edmonds;
    -Stand! (1969), breakthrough album with the string of hits "Everyday People," "Sing A Simple Song," "Stand!" and "I Want To Take You Higher," five bonus tracks including three mono single versions and two previously unreleased tracks; with new liner notes by England's Barney Hoskyns;
    -There's A Riot Goin' On (1971), landmark #1 album with "Family Affair," "Runnin' Away," and "(You Caught Me) Smilin'," four bonus tracks including one mono single version and three previously unreleased instrumental tracks; with new liner notes by the San Francisco Chronicle's Joel Selvin;
    -Fresh (1973), with "If You Want Me To Stay," "Frisky," "If It Were Left Up To Me," and "Que Sera, Sera" (the only cover in Sly's entire original album catalog), five bonus tracks - all alternate mixes of unreleased album masters; with new liner notes by Touré;
    -Small Talk (1974), the group's final Epic album, with "Time For Livin'" and "Loose Booty," four previously unreleased bonus tracks including three alternate versions; with original liner notes by Steve Lake of Melody Maker, and new liners by Alex Stimmel

    GAWD I hate digi-packs but that's a helluva lot of music for 40 bucks. Not just any music either. I only had two of those because the whole catalogue was hard to track down, maybe impossible.

    I've heard people say Rhino is hit or miss but I guess I've been lucky. Their Yes remasters were better than Gastwirt and Marino(?) on Atlantic and that surprised the hell out of me. I'm sure even their misses are better than run-of-the-mill hack jobs. Too bad they didn't get the early Kinks because those are unlistenable on Castle. That process I described in the earlier post is what results in that shrill high-end. It happens a lot with older recordings. But I think Sony has done a good job w/ the CBS Masterworks jazz stuff so this Sly box is all good news.

    That IS an awful lot of Sly for the money, but I think for now I'll stick to the find I spoke of here:

    Lucinda Williams + Alejandro Escovedo = Fun

    Especially since I haven't even listened to it yet. That box set might get scooped up a little later. I loves me some Sly.

    Actually, it's on the original Epic label, with no indication of who did the reissue, but the rekkids definitely are not typical 80's U.S. scrawny vinyl- they're 180g. Kind of a mystery, but who knows what happens in these furrin countries. I see now after looking around that the cd version is available as an import at several of the usual on-line sources, but allmusic doesn't list it at all.

    Sorry for the hijack, Davey. Was just an odd coincidence.

    Hey, sounds like a good find ol' buddy, no apologies necessary. Those LPs are crammed full of some great tunes. I'm really looking forward to hearing again some of those old mono mixes on this box set, cause a lot of that stereo stuff is just not done right. I remember on one of the albums you could switch the polarity of one channel and it sounded a little better, the stereo mix was so phasey. Wound up listening to it switched to mono, but it loses a lot of stuff

    The box set just shipped yesterday for anyone that's interested.

    NFW -- I just placed an order for $9.99 and I'm gonna keep my fingers crossed. Anyone else ordered a set at that price?

    I just sprung for 3, the most they'll let you order... worst case scenario is that I'm just gonna get my money back.

    Last time we took advantage of a mistake like this, I believe that Stone got a $5 Beat Happening box set (I, unfortunately, only got a refund).

    Greedy little shit, aren't you?

    Heehee, hopefully they'll give me a price match on the one that already shipped, haven't got a response yet. But I did order another box before posting, cause I'm kind of a greedy little shit myself and wanted to get all my cards on the table. Deal of the week ... if they really deliver.

    Hey Rae, do you have any connection with Signal To Trust? I really like that CD. Do you remember that Life Without Buildings record from a few years ago that I was big on? Sounded kind of like the Feelies take on VU, but fronted by a slightly neurotic sounding woman with a child-like voice and a fragmented, stream of consciousness type delivery. Well, this kind of reminds me of that, although a bit harder edged musically and more masculine sounding. Cool stuff. Thanks, that's some classy packaging on the CD.

    best buy Sly

    I ordered when I saw the $10.00 price on sunday, monday i got an e-mail saying order cancelled. I ask why, tuesday they said it was an incorrect price(no ****!), but they did give me a printable voucher for $10.00 and my credit card was credited, so I'm ahead not a bad mornings work.

    Damn, I was really hoping to be able tog rab this for $10 bucks.

    Still considering it at the real price, but I've already gt about half of 'em on vinyl...not sure if I wouldn't rather spend the cash filling in that collection instead of replacing 'em with the box.
