My Cool Canadian Comp is ready

Well, there may still be a track or two that gets changed, but I'm ready to take orders. There will be no unsolicited copies going out since I have lost everyone's addresses. So, if you want one you will have to let me know and provide me with your address again.

This comp is all Canadian bands. All of the CDs came out in 2003 with the exception of two disks which were released in late 2002 but I purchased them in 2003 so, in my mind, they count as 2003.

I have put two tracks from each band on the comp to give you a bit of a feel for the band. I find that it's hard sometimes to know whether you like a band or not when you only hear one track. Many of these bands are considered mainstream in Canada, and are getting some regular airplay, but may not have made it over the border. I'm sure that there's lots here that my American friends and friends overseas have not heard.

I'm not going to lay out the track list for you because, as I said earlier, one or two of the track selections are still up in the air. However, the bands that I have chosen to include are:

    Kathleen Edwards
    Jim Bryson
    Sam Roberts
    Colin James
    Melanie Doane
    Sloan
    The Trews
    Treble Charger
    Three Days Grace

The disk starts off kind of slow with some Alt. Country and then slowly builds to the metal of Three Days Grace. I don't expect anyone to like everything on here, but I think that there is something for everyone. This is truly a Sampler.

Copies are available for anyone who's interested. Just let me know.

    FA

Looks cool, but you must know by now that Broken Social Scene is the best Canadian band playing music today, eh?

I'd like to get a copy so I'll shoot you an email and give you my address. Thanks

BTW, do you ever read the canoe.ca site? They have a Trews section that may be of interest .... http://www.canoe.ca/JamMusicArtistsT/trews.html

Well Dusty, since you mentioned them....we have tickets to see Loverboy in March. They're playing at a nearby casino and the tickets were comped.

Hey, thanks for the heads up on The Trews link. I don't usually read the Canoe site. Are you a Canucklehead, Intruder? Whereabouts are you from?

I've heard a lot about Broken Social Scene and I know that they're local, but I've never heard them. I don't even see them playing the clubs around here. Either I'm not paying enough attention or they're having more success elsewhere.

And how can you have an all-Canadian comp without:

    The Unicorns (of course )
    Neutral Milk Hotel
    Hot Hot Heat
    Neil Young
    Tragically Hip

    huh?

Of course leaving off Rush makes for good diplomatic relations

    Everyone's a critic

Hey Intruderdude, get the new Califone?

NP: Sparklehorse - It's A Wonderful Life (aren't they due out with a new one too?)

Me a Canucklehead? No, but I do like it up there, at least on the west side. Sorry for the confusion, but I forgot that I was posting as a newbie. I'm the guy that sent you that Season's Greetings 2003 comp, you know, the one with the Broken Social Scene song on it? Guess you never made it up to track 4, eh?

Hehehe, I'll send you an email soon. Take care, FA.

    I'd like.

I tried to email you thru the board, but apparently you're having none of that.

Here's an avatar for you- it's a scan of a sticker I've got lying around. I'll send it along next time I send you something.

So, I guess email me for my address?

    Thanks, I think.

Much as I'd like to claim Neutral Milk Hotel as fellow Canuckleheads, I think you're mistaken on that one. But thanks for the heads up on The Unicorns, never had heard of them, I'll have to check them out after looking them up on AMG.

Cool avatar. Thanks FP! It's like a SuperHero badge or something. Hmmmmm, what should my SuperHero power be?

I'm thinking about adding a couple of tracks to my comp that will make you, in particular, want to gouge your eardrums out. Should I leave these tracks off of your copy?

But you've heard all of those bands. How many on my comp have you heard?

Sorry, I didn't recognize you. You look different. Did you change your hair?
I revisited the BSS track. That's the problem when I listen to comps in my car. I can't read the track list and drive at the same time. So, I often only pick up the bands of the stand-out songs, which this one wasn't one of. I liked it okay, but I don't like when bands bury their vocals like that. If the vocals were more up-front, I would have enjoyed it a lot more. Do they do this with all of their vocals?

FYI, the songs that I did really like on your comp were: Beulah; British Sea Power; Califone; Super Furry Animals; The Wrens; The Shins; and Head of Femur. The second half of the comp had a lot more for me than the first half.

Since we're name dropping Canadian artists, how about the Constantines? One of the best straight ahead rock bands out there right now.

Oh, and Destroyer and NoMeansNo are pretty damn good too. Then there's the Salteens and . . .
And the world will turn to flowing pink vapor stew.

My CD says "made in Canada" so I put 2 + 2 together and came up with 5 OK, I'll just shut up now.

Hey FA, just busying your, um, stuff I actually have heard three of those artists/bands and they have me reaching for this disc skip button Just ignore me.

Intruderduder, read the Pitchfork review and assumed the album was out. Haven't been to a record store since before the holidays.

Mark, pretty sure you'd like The Unicorns but not 100% so I can make you a "preview" copy if you'd like?

    My favorite Canadians...

    DOA & Subhumans

    My least favorite Canadians...

    Celien Dion & Bryan Adams

Of course, everyone on this board from up north should go under my favorites list as well.

Smile Yeah, but your Maple Leafs were not!

Gee, after the 4-1 pounding they took in Philly on Friday night, you'd think they would be out for revenge. Nope, not the Leafs. They take a 4-0 clubbing on home ice. Just when I thought the Flyers were in a prolonged slump, something have nearly every year about this time, the Leafs came into town to give us some relief.

Now if only the Eagles can win the conference championship today, I'll be in all my glory for at least the next week or so.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. So the Leafs lost. At least the Leafs haven't been only a game away from the finals and CHOKED for the last three years in a row! Looks like your Eagles lost a few more feathers yesterday, eh?

Yeah, yeah, yeah, so the Eagles lost a few feathers. They were not supposed to make it to that game, but they did. They certainly played well enough to win, but when an opposing player intentionally injures your quarterback (yes, he certainly intended to inflict injury), what can you do? They didn't even throw a flag on the *******, much less toss him out of the game. The Eagles are still the better team, but they did fail to win the big one. If they had stayed healthy (they were without their best linebacker, their best running back, and two starting defensive linemen) the outcome would have/should have been different. Now I hope New England kicks their asses good and hard.

As for your Leafs, we'll see how things shape up this year. I think this is the Flyers year for sure, so stay tuned.

    Swish, still an Eagles fan.
