    One cold damp evening
    The world stood still
I watched as I held my breath
    A silhouette I thought I knew
    Came through
    And someone spoke to me
    Whispered in my ear
    This fantasy's for you
    Fantasies are "in" this year

My whole life passed before my eyes
    I thought
    What they say is true
I shed my skin and my disguise
    And cold, numb and naked
    I emerged from my cocoon
    And a half remembered tune
    Played softly in my head

    Then he turned smiling
    And said
I realize a miracle is due
I dedicate this melody to you
But is this the stuff dreams are made of?
If this is the stuff dreams are made of
No wonder I feel like I'm floating on air
    Everywhere
    It feels like I'm everywhere

It's like you fail to make the connection
You know how vital it is
Or when something slips through your fingers
You know how precious it is
Well you reach the point where you know
    It's only your second skin

    Someone's banging on my door

    Sacrificed Sons

    Sacrificed Sons

[Music: Dream Theater, Lyrics: James LaBrie]

    Walls are closing
    Anxiously
    Channel surfing
    Frantically

    Burning City
    Smoke and fire
    Planes we're certain
    Faith inspired

    No clues
    A complete surprise
    Who'll be
    Coming home tonight

    Heads all turning
    Towards the sky
    Towers crumble
    Heroes die

    Who would wish this
    On our people
    And proclaim
    That His will be done
Scriptures they heed have misled them
    All praise their Sacrificed Sons

    Teach them
    What to think and feel
    Your ways
    So enlightening

    Words they preach
    I can't relate
    If God's true Love
    Are acts of Hate

    God on High
    Our mistakes
    Will mankind be extinct?
    There's no time to waste
    Who serves the truth
    For Heavens' sake

    Classic Lyrics

Pick your favorite language and everyone sing along now..............

    Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
    REQUIEM [d-moll KV 626.]

    Languages: Latin, German

    Latin:

    1. Requiem
Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine, et lux perpetua luceat eis, te decet
hymnus, Deus in Sion, et tibi reddetur votum in Jerusalem; exaudi
orationem meam, ad te omnis caro veniet.
Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine, et lux perpetua luceat eis.
Kyrie eleison, Christe eleison, Kyrie eleison.
    2. Dies irae
Dies irae, dies illa solvet saeclum in favilla, teste David cum Sybilla.
Quantus tremor est futurus, quando judex est venturus, cuncta stricte
    discussurus.
    3. Tuba mirum
Liber scriptus proferetur, in quo totum continetur, unde mundus judicetur.
Judex ergo cum sedebit, quidquid latet apparebit, nil inultum remanebit.
Quid sum miser tunc dicturus? quem patronum rogaturus, cum vix justus
    sit securus?
    4. Rex tremendae
Rex tremandae maiestatis, qui salvandos salvas gratis, salva me, fons
    pietatis.
    5. Recordare
Recordare Jesu pie, quod sum causa tuae viae, ne me perdas illa die.
Quaerens me sedisti lassus, redemisti crucem passus; tantus labor non
    sit cassus.
Juste judex ultionis, donum fac remissionis ante diem rationis.
Ingemisco tanquam reus, culpa rubet vultus meus; supplicanti parce Deus.
    dextra.
    6. Confutatis
Confutatis maledictis, flammis acribus addictis, voca me cum benedictis.
Oro supplex et acclinis, cor contritum quasi cinis, gere curam mei finis.
    7. Lacrymosa
Lacrymosa dies illa, qua resurget ex favilla judicandus homo reus.
Huic ergo parce Deus, pie Jesu Domine, dona eis requiem! Amen!
    8. Domine Jesu
Domine Jesu Christe! Rex gloriae! Libera animas omnium fidelium defunctorum
    gloria tua.
    Osanna in excelsis.
    11. Benedictis
Benedictis, qui venit in nomine Domini.
    Osanna in excelsis.
    12. Agnus Dei
Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona eis requiem.
Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona eis requiem sempiternam.
Lux aeterna luceat eis, Domine, cum sanctis in aeternum, quia pius es.
Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine, et lux perpetua luceat eis.

    German:

    1. Requiem
Was werd', Armer, ich dann sprechen?
Wange; Herr, lass Flehen dich versoehnen!
All' mein
Ruhe. Ewiges Licht leuchte ihnen, Herr, mit allen deinen Heiligen in
Ewigkeit, denn du bist ewig gut. Ewige Ruhe gieb ihnen, Herr, und
    ewiges Licht leuchte ihnen.

I don't speak Latin, but this one's cool...

In the life of the wrong a love lingered on,
    Love lingered on to frustration.
And if our love is so wrong, what should we do alone?
Or am I just a picture in a photograph?
Why are we stuck in this pantomime fearing a god who died?
One who would not deny lovers?
And I don't care what they say, if what you need is your faith,
Then take a look at my face and know

That till your rapture falls to pieces
Until your rapture falls to pieces
Find in me the room to breathe,
    Simple things like suffering
    Life had gone this way
    Life is gone this way

Still in the life of the wrong we all moved along
    Another life evolved to gestation
And so she made her way with the mistake we made
But she was still a picture from a photograph

So she walked in the baby's room
Knowing what she should do leaves me in
    Absolute horror
She put her hands on its lips and gave it
    One last kiss
And sang some tune that went

Until your rapture falls to pieces
Till your rapture falls to pieces
Find in me, the room to breathe,
    Simple things like suffering

And I would and I would destroy your god
Yes I would if I could destroy your god
    Because you're born again
    Until you're worn again,

Until your rapture falls to pieces
Till your rapture falls to pieces
Find in me the room to breathe,
    Sinful things are suffering
Till your rapture falls to pieces
Till your rapture falls to pieces

But, this must be, then burn with me
    Anything
    Just don't leave

So find in me room to breathe
    Sinful things like suffering
Till your rapture falls to pieces

She swore she heard the voice of Jesus
Telling her it was wrong to keep it
And one more thing, it looked like me
    Back when it breathed
    Rest in peace
Until the rapture comes to meet us

    On a cobweb afternoon
In a room full of emptiness
    By a freeway I confess
I was lost in the pages
Of a book full of death
    Reading how we'll die alone
And if we're good we'll lay to rest
    Anywhere we want to go

In your house I long to be
    Room by room patiently
    I'll wait for you there
    Like a stone
    I'll wait for you there
    Alone

On my deathbed I will pray
To the gods and the angels
    Like a pagan to anyone
Who will take me to heaven
    To a place I recall
I was there so long ago
    The sky was bruised
    The wine was bled
And there you led me on

In your house I long to be
    Room by room patiently
    I'll wait for you there
    Like a stone
    I'll wait for you there
    Alone

    And on I read
    Until the day was gone
    And I sat in regret
Of all the things I've done
    For all that I've blessed
    And all that I've wronged
    In dreams until my death
    I will wander on
Don't you like it on the sly? Don't you like it till it hurts? Have I been on your mind? What's a voice without a song?

    go on out
    get some more
    go on out
    to your favorite liquor store
    go on out
don't worry about it any more
    go on out
    get ****ed up
    i don't know what for

    I don't wanna live
    to be fifty-seven
    I'm living in hell

    Will be making judgements
About what's wrong and what's right

    Politicians and lawyers
    All know what it means
They'll be keeping it all legal
    With political visquine

    Macho City

    As time marches
    Through the ages

    The wind sang us a lullaby, the snow was thick as cream; and icicles were chandeliers like crystals in a dream;
    and the streams were strips of diamonds; and the hills were white as snow;
and a bear ate all our soybeans in the night.

    Oh, Colorado's calling me, from her hillsides and her rivers and her mesas and ravines;
When blizzards snap the powerlines and all the toilets freeze
in December in the Colorado Rockies.

    We had time and space and freedom; we had love and peace to spare;
'though we ran out of things to smoke, to say and eat and wear.
And the morning of the avalanche the Yeti kidnapped Blanche
and took her to his cave up in the Rockies.

Oh, Colorado's calling me; from her glaciers and her canyons, and her badlands and ravines.
When infectious hepatitis was all that came to stay
in January in the Colorado Rockies.

    The baby didn't die until we burned up all our wood;
Considering we ate her raw, she tasted pretty good.
    And the facist health inspectors dug us out and mailed us home;
Except for Blanche, who wouldn't leave her mate.

    Oh, Colorado's callin' me, from her hillsides and her rivers and her mesas and ravines;
They tell me I'll be cured soon for I'm ready to return
When it's April in the Colorado Rockies.

    Any guesses?
I get the feeling that no one read past the first sugar-coated verses to get to the good stuff. These lyrics are from the National Lampoon's "Lemmings" album, circa 1973. The song, "Colorado" (subtitled "Entrails of the Rockies") was a John Denver parody sung by Chevy Chase, with backing vocals by John Belushi and Gilda Radner. Chevy didn't sound a whole lot like Denver, but the instrumentation, arrangement and over-all John Denver "feel" were spot on.

A divorced lady arrives home from a bar
Guess, guess what she sees, sees there
There is a naked person in my flat!
He's got a weird expression on his face!
Oh my god and jesus as well!
    W-what are you doing here?
    Are you hurting your chest?
    Offending yourself!?

Forcing yourself into pain and sorrow like there is no tomorrow?
You should use the pain and sorrow
To fill you up with power
    Life's both sweet and sour!

He looks at me hopeless with tears in his eyes
Goes out of the window and up on the roof
Naked man, naked man calm down!
I-I'll give you some strawberry cake

Don't act like there is no tomorrow
You should use the pain and the sorrow
To fill you up with power
    Life's both sweet and sour!

    Aaaaaow!
    Life's both sweet and sour!
    Life's both sweet and sour!
    Life's both sweet and sour!
    Don't act
    Don't act
    Don't act-act

    Like there's no tomorrow!
You should use the pain and sorrow
To fill you up with power
    Life's both sweet and sour

Don't act like there is no tomorrow
You should use the pain and sorrow
To fill you up with power
    Life's both sweet and sour

    Ta ta ta ooh woah!
    oooh...ooh....
    Life's both sweet and sour

And if we're good we'll lay to rest
    Anywhere we want to go

In your house I long to be
    Room by room patiently
    I'll wait for you there
    Like a stone
    I'll wait for you there
    Alone

On my deathbed I will pray
To the gods and the angels
    Like a pagan to anyone
Who will take me to heaven
    To a place I recall
I was there so long ago
    The sky was bruised
    The wine was bled
And there you led me on

In your house I long to be
    Room by room patiently
    I'll wait for you there
    Like a stone
    I'll wait for you there
    Alone

    And on I read
    Until the day was gone
    And I sat in regret
Of all the things I've done
    For all that I've blessed
    And all that I've wronged
    In dreams until my death
    I will wander on
    "Like a Stone" by Audioslave.

Compare lyrics like this with the one that nightflier posted, and you'll understand why I say I've yet to see anyone come along in recent times who even comes close to Chris Cornell's mastery.

Tex, I was just contributing. It wasn't an attempt at being poetic... Circle Jerks never were about being poetic anyhow, but they were local, and I guess that's something.

& that was a different time....

Dein weißes Fleisch erregt mich so
ich bin doch nur ein Gigolo
    dein weißes Fleisch erleuchtet mich

Mein schwarzes Blut und dein weißes Fleisch
ich werd immer geiler von deinem Gekreisch
der Angstschweiß da auf deiner weißen Stirn
    hagelt in mein krankes Gehirn

Dein weißes Fleisch erregt mich so

Dein weißes Fleisch erregt mich so
ich bin doch nur ein Gigolo
    dein weißes Fleisch erleuchtet mich
mein Vater war genau wie ich
dein weißes Fleisch erregt mich so
    ich bin ein trauriger Gigolo
    dein weißes Fleisch erleuchtet mich
So, I broke into the palace
With a sponge and a rusty spanner
She said : "Eh, I know you, and you cannot sing"
I said : "That's nothing - you should hear me play piano"

This is the part I had to laugh at.

That Orange County/SoCal scene was pretty badass while it lasted...

Tex, LDB, and the rest of the giggling pre-pubescents in the back of the classroom... you have to see the irony in it. It was an anti-establishment statement for the band to choose the name, right when everybody was so uptight about this sort of stuff (you know, the Carter & Reagan years). I doubt the Sex Pistols would be insulted.

    What Made America Famous
    by Harry Chapin

It was the town that made America famous.
The churches full and the kids all gone to hell.
Six traffic lights and seven cops and all the streets kept clean.
The supermarket and the drug store and the bars all doing well...
Harry Chapin was a lyrical genius IMO. I'm not familiar with this tune. But I'm going to look it up on iTunes. Thanks for posting this one Worf.

I love a song that tells a story. Here's one that I was listening to this morning...

    The fix is in
There's a nag gonna dance home at Epsom

    The fix is in
Can't wait to see how it upsets 'em

Too many times we've been postally pipped
We've loaded the saddles, the mickeys are slipped
We're swapping the turf for the sand and the surf and the sin
Cause the fix, the fix is in

    The fix is in
The odds that I got were delicious

    The fix is in
The jockey is cocky and vicious

The redoubtable beast has had pegasus pills
We'll buy him the patch in the Tuscany hills
And the Vino di Vici will flow like a river in spring
Now the fix, the fix is in

    The fix is in
The snaps of the steward so candid

    The fix is in
Yes, our pigeons have finally landed

The Donahue sisters will meet us in France
In penguins and pearls, we'll drink and we'll dance
'Til the end of our days, cause it ain't left to chance
    That we win
Cause the fix, the fix is in

No lyrics thread would be complete without some Al Stewart, IMO. Here's one of my favourites...

    One Stage Before

It seems to me as though I've been upon this stage before
And juggled away the night for the same old crowd
These harlequins you see with me, they too have held the floor
As here once again they strut and they fret their hour
I see those half-familiar faces in the second row
Ghost-like with the footlights in their eyes
But where or when we met like this last time I just don't know
It's like a chord that rings and never dies
    For infinity

And now these figures in the wings with all their restless tunes
Are waiting around for someone to call their names
They walk the backstage corridors and prowl the dressing-rooms
And vanish to specks of light in the picture-frames
But did they move upon the stage a thousand years ago
In some play in Paris or Madrid?
And was I there among them then, in some travelling show
And is it all still locked inside my head
    For infinity

And some of you are harmonies to all the notes I play
Although we may not meet still you know me well
While others talk in secret keys and transpose all I say
And nothing I do or try can get through the spell
So one more time we'll dim the lights and ring the curtain up
And play again like all the times before
But far behind the music you can almost hear the sounds
Of laughter like the waves upon the shores
    Of infinity

    Good stuff, good stuff....How about:

    "...Far away accross the field
The tolling of the iron bell
Calls the faithful to their knees
To hear the softly spoken magic spells."

    I always likes that.

Count Roger Waters as another one of my favorite lyricists.
