Been playing that "Budderball" disc Finch sent me too. He says it's like Zappa, but not really. To me It's kinda like Primus, but much rougher around the edges. The lyrics are really dark and death oriented, but in a humorous way. Lots of junkie gags too. This disc has just hit me right in the sweet spot. It's a homer.

Franz Ferdinand and the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs topped the playlists this past week. Also had a chance to barely squeek Blonde Redhead and Electralene in under the wire to qualify for this week. A couple of standouts on both but I'm liking the Electralene the most. Not even sure if I've got the name right though. Sad, very sad.

Been visiting the 80s for a reunion project I'm working on. Today, I listened to Stone's very excellent 2 Disc Stuck in the 80s comps. Lots of Fugazi, Violent Femmes, Dead Kennedy's, Alphaville, New Order, Husker Du, Jesus & Mary Chain etc.

Also listened to Nobody's 2-disc Pop Goes The 80s comps. More Wall of Voodoo, English Beat, Joe Jackson, Greg Kihn, Buggles, Frankie Goes to Hollywood etc.

Listened to the new Prince Musicology disc that was given out at the concert last week. Not bad. Just one listen so far.

Someone at work gave me the new Janet Jackson Damita Jo today. I tried to politely turn it down, but they said I "had" to listen to it, that it was very good. I'll give it a shot later tonight.

Got disappointed over the wk-end looking locally in vain for 2 new releases I really wanted, so slim new-to-me stuff. Gave CRSV9 several spins, mostly winners on that one, a few in the middle that go sideways for me. Breaking in new speaks still with:

a coupla pick-ups- Leon Russell's Carney- faithfully mastered from the original Shelter masters to cd by S. Hoffman. Been a long time since I'd heard this, and it is still fine with me. Also, Elliot Murphy's Beauregard, a 1998 jewel found on 1/2dotcom. Love it. Bob Neuwirth with Jose Maria Vitier, Havana Midnight- growing on me.

No time on Tuesday to post my shaky recollections, but this thread has the looks of one that could use a little Wednesday support

Lali Puna - Faking The Books
Listened to this new one a few times and it does have some of that same warm electro-organic glow that I love so much about the Notwists' Neon Golden, to which it will inevitably be compared since Lali Puna is half Markus Acher, but it is still quite a bit different and not just because of the female vocals. Their music sounds more electronic than the Notwist, but then again Neon Golden is one of those unique electronic albums that almost makes you forget that anything is even plugged in. The electronics here are still balanced with guitar and, in some songs, cello and violin like on Neon Golden, but without the somewhat more endearing (to me) forays into folk music. Kind of like a lazy version of New Order but with some added herky jerkys and glitches. Kinda nice and still very sublime, just not quite the classic that is Neon Golden. At least not yet......but with every album I hear that initially seems to have some of the charm of Neon Golden, the more I realize how extraordinary was The Notwist's achievement, at least in my view. Probably also worth noting that it's a pretty nice sounding CD that was not surprisingly mastered at Abbey Road by oldtimer Chris Blair, just as was Neon Golden and many other good sounding CDs.

Simple Minds - Early Gold
Pretty much just what the title says, except they didn't score much gold until the end of those early years. Some of us talked a little about early Simple Minds in another recent thread, and this is a pretty nice introduction. Covers most of the best songs from the days when they sounded more like Wire and Talking Heads than the later radio-friendly pop that made them international stars. Very interesting to listen to the progression of their sound from 1978 to 1982 on this chronological collection. I still love both Chelsea Girl and New Gold Dream, but you probably wouldn't recognize them as being by the same band. Very cool 15-song Virgin UK collection.

The Stills - Logic Will Break Your Heart
Don't know yet - only listened once and wasn't really all that impressed. Initially sounds a little like a mix of U2 and Coldplay at times which doesn't endear it to me very much at this point in time, although they aren't really as glossy sounding as that would suggest and I wouldn't be at all surprised if that Coldplay sound I hear turns out to ultimately be something closer to the more indie hipster approved Echo & the Bunnymen as many seem to suggest. Jury is still out but I feel this one might be a real grower for me. Then again, I never really climbed all the way onto that Interpol bandwagon.....

Electrelane - The Power Out
Might be my favorite recent album, not sure yet. Probably listened to it more than anything else, though. Definitely catches a lot of the sound and the appeal of the Feelies outstanding 1980 debut, Crazy Rhythms, which I also recall listening to a bunch this week (or was it last week?). I've already said a lot about it here but I just saw a recent review at http://www.drawerb.com/02/1082691322.htm that opens with a description of this band/album that I find myself kind of agreeing with, so I'll post it below....

It’s weird how certain bands can remind you of so many others within seconds, yet still sound unique and invigorating. Electrelane is a female quartet from Brighton, England, playing jangly guitar-rock rooted in post-punk with flourishes of Stereolab and The Pretenders. The spooky organ bits subtlely underpin the minimal guitar/bass interplay amidst the loose, almost jammy framework (similar to the band’s debut on Mr. Lady). The vocals can be gruff as well as serene, harmonizing in unexpected places, but it all fuses together with that nagging feeling that you should be paying attention.

And of course some comps like the excellent CRSV9 which even included a track from that last album, although not from me. Much more cuddly collection this time around and a few that I want to check out more. Very nice job and yes, the cover is cool

I've played it twice on SACD and twice on cd. So far so good. Since I wasn't familiar with TT, I really didn't know what to expect from the album. Based on the era (late 80's ?) I guess I expected more new wave influences. However this album has a cool jazzy vibe to it .
It's definetly an album as opposed to a collection of songs and it has a nice flow. Some of the songs seemed vaguely familiar, so maybe I have heard Talk Talk before (in another life).
Sonics of course are great in SACD and the cd layer is very good as well. I guess the good news is; one of your recs hit home with me, thanks. Bad news is; you ain't gettin' it from me.

...actually, it would have been even more surprising if you had heard their early stuff before ("It's My Life", "..all you do to me is Talk Talk...", "Such A Shame", etc.), because this album was a real departure for them. Their first album (The Party's Over) was pure unadulterated new wave synth pop, and by their third album (The Colour of Spring, also available on SACD, my personal favourite album of theirs) they had developed a much more organic pop sensibility. There were hints of what was to come, but even warned, it still hit me like a ton of bricks (on the receiving end, that is). Yeah, there's definitely some Miles type muted horn and use of silence references.

Just a couple of good listens for me

Damien Rice - O, This is an album which I like the more I listen to. Delicate vocals which just draw you in, not everybody's cup of tea I know but if it is it must be in your collection.

Snow Patrol - Final Straw, I was a bit luke warm to this at first but now it's a real grower a couple of instant songs sorrounded by some gems. Nothing groundbreaking but good nonetheless.

The Stills - Logic Will Break... Can't leave this one alone it's probably my favourite release from last year - thanks again JC

The Handsome Family - various releases, really enjoying this stuff, quirky dark and broody in places with lots to enjoy about them.

Franz Ferdinand - There's a lot of good acts coming out the UK at the moment but as for FF the jury came my way, gave their verdict and it wasn't too good. I accept it's re-hashed stuff but I just don't think it's particularly good re-hashed stuff. A couple of half decent tracks for me but that's about it. It's already found a new home where it's appreciated.

I didn't go for a copy of CRSV9 but now I'm thinking maybe I should chase one up cos it sounds pretty good. Heard some samples of American Analog Set from Know Your Heart which is now top of my wishlist.

As for new releases really looking forward to new albums from Ash and Gomez due any day now.

Funny about the Franz Ferdinand, although I remember you saying that before. Seems like a few others around here feel about the same as you. Oddly enough, I just checked at http://www.metacritic.com/music/ today and I see that those two CDs are at number 6 and 7 on their list right now. No wonder I like them both, I'm such a lapdog for the critics

Hehehe, we seem to be flip-flopped on FF and the Stills at the moment, but I've only listened to the latter once. Need to spin it some more to get a better feel for it, especially since so many of you that have similar taste to my own (well, usually) love it.

I only have the one AmAnSet CD, Promise of Love, but it's very good and I guess most of their albums are pretty similar, from what I've read. Is that a new one? I fell for this one at a listening station, it was just so immediately likeable to me. It has that kind of melancholy shimmer and glimmer running all throughout that I like so much. Keep me posted if you get a different one.

New Ash, eh? I bought the 2-CD Intergalactic Sonic 7"s/Cosmic Debris last year and am still absorbing all the goodness on those discs. Before that I only had the Trailer CD (used a song from it on my 95 retro). They've really grown into a good band but have never quite made it over here in the States to anywhere near the same level as in the UK. Too bad.

Hey Dave thanks for the offer of CRSV9 I'll take you up on that and anything else you think I'll like, a snatch of that Lali Puna sounds good. Neon Golden has turned into one of my favourites over the last couple of years so with the link with them I think I might like. Actually that's part of the appeal with American AS although The Notwist are more electronic to me they sound very similar with those incessant beats and low key slightly out of tune vocals. The album I managed to hear some samples from came out in 2001 and it's called Know By Heart it gets a pretty good review on Allmusic. I'll send you something back in a week or so when I've managed to pick up the Ash and Gomez albums.

Talking about Ash it's more or less 10 years since Britpop exploded and Ash have always bubbled away but even in the UK they've never been huge. I've got high hopes for this latest album there's a cracking single from it played on the radio a lot at the moment. They've just stuck to what they do best and survived which can't be said for many acts of 10 years or more, maybe it's their time now.
